Now that the Epic Store has been on market over two years what do you think about it? Has your opinion changed from what it was initially? Are you against Epic in principle or do you just prefer Steam’s or GOG’s features too much. Or does it not matter to you on what client your games are?

Personally I don’t have a problem with Epic’s business tactics. But still the only game I’ve bought there is World War Z. I really prefer to split my library as little as possible, and I’d rather not have some games stuck on an inferior launcher. And I’m not happy with how slowly the client has been improving. Steam input also tends to be finicky with games not native to Steam. I do grab every free game though.

I accidentally typed Epic Game Sore in the title at first 😵

I picked the 2nd option, even though i did actually buy 1 game, but due to the circumstances (Getting a 50% off Epic coupon from Ubisoft for extensive feedback for them with the beta's for GR Breakpoint, and Breakpoint already being on offer on Epic, and the £10 off voucher from Epic themselves), the pittance i paid for Breakpoint meant that the game probably cost Epic more than it did me lol.

I like free games, so majority of my library there is all Free games. Though I do have a few exclusive titles, and I'll have a few more soon (I'm looking at you Chivalry 2). I wish they were elsewhere, but when they're games I'm interested in and want to play on PC, I don't have a choice.

I think it's fine for the most part but honestly for the amount of money Epic has it's pretty ridiculous that EGS isn't seeing more frequent updates. I mean, some of the most basic functionality just isn't present, or doesn't work as intended. It feels like the most basic platform, and it's felt that way since it launched.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
So far I've only grabbed free shit, but if some exclusive comes out and I really wanna play it I don't see why I shouldn't buy it there.

I will buy a game if I really want it. If the same game is on Steam, I buy it there though. So far I only have some (and by some I mean... holy shit I have so many) of the free games and Borderlands 3.

I refuse to support it just because of bringing the paid exclusivity shit (one of the worst parts of consoles) to PC, a mostly open platform. I won't support them, I won't download the client, and I won't even make an account to claim free games. Their developed exclusives are 100% fine in my eyes, btw. Just the shit of paying people not to publish on Steam for 1+ years is what grinds my gears. The client itself from what I've read STILL doesn't have a cart, and lacks a lot of Steam's community features. I've even seen pathetic things like developers posting on Steam forums to help matchmake games from the EGS client. I think that was Ubisoft that did it most notably.

If Tim would back off on the paid exclusivity bullshit and just release strong games and make a competitive and feature rich store, I would be interested.

without paid exclusivity the egs wouldn't exist.

look at GOG for example. the platform is DRM free. that is supposedly the holy grail of pc gaming. no protection at all. you literally own the game not just a license. and still just 1/3 of cyberpunk pc sales were through GOG everyone else bought the game on steam. and that is a game made by cpdr themselves. people like gog on paper. but they buy games from steam.

or look at the now dead discord game store. everyone uses discord already so you would need to just have discord open and you can talk with your friends and have your collection of games there. steam has chat and voice chat but they are awful. sounds great right? massive failure it lasted less than a year.

EGS on the other hand launched in December 2018 and they already have %15 of market share and growing. compare that to every company that tried to compete with steam and failed.

the bottom line is. even if you have a better store than steam. with better features and cheaper prices. people would still buy on steam because they already have all their collection and their friends there and they are used to it. so the way you compete with steam is you force gamers to use your store via exclusivity. Tim said that this was basically the only way even if it makes hardcore gamers on the internet hate him and i agree with him. i've never seen so many people insult somebody for giving away hundreds of games lol.

It's pretty good

I've enjoyed several of the free games and when they combine their great regional pricing with the occasional $10 off coupon they seriously have some of the lowest prices in gaming right now, regardless of platform.
Got DQ11 Definitive at launch for like $7, Control in mid 2020 for $6, Jedi Fallen Order like a month after launch for $19.

The store itself is rather barebones as far as features go, and the launcher is kinda slow for some reason. But I just don't care too much about stuff like that, I hardly interact with the launcher at all since I redeem free games and buy new ones through a regular browser and I launch games through GOG Galaxy.

I'm not a fan of the exclusives though. I'd rather see them publishing new games instead of just paying third party devs not to release their games on Steam.
Or just take all that money for exclusive deals and hand out more $10 off coupons, it's the low prices more than any exclusives which has had me buying from them several times.

Are those numbers accurate tho, because it seems they include fortnite players in the pool of store users and concurrent players. From the numbers they released, less than half of the money spent is actually in third-party software too.

Cretinously credulous
I've grabbed a few games there, both free and fully paid. I prefer Steam only slightly above it. Whichever one has a game cheaper, I get from there.
I do think that its good for consumers that there is competition now.

It's ok. I appreciate the free games and I've grabbed a few others on sale. It's clearly inferior to Steam in a lot of ways but I hold no animosity.

I don't like it, for several reasons.

The most basic surface of it is that I think the store just really sucks, doesn't have as many features as steam, and it's once again another useless launcher to go through, meaning you don't have your usual account with your achievements, friends, other games etc.
I did use some others launchers in the past and I still do for some exceptions, but I like to avoid it when I can, because Steam gives me the most covenient user experience. I actually even used the Epic Laucher (before the epic game store) to play Paragon and use Unreal Engine, so it's really not just "it's another launcher" issue for me, it goes deeper. There are a lot of other reasons to be against the epic game store, which are more of principle / moral reasons.

Epic has been using awful methods to get more attention. They don't even want to have as many features as steam, because they based their userbase on mostly younger players who discovered pc gaming with fortnite and such, and don't really know better(which isn't their fault). They don't care about allowing forums, user reviews and others because for them "influencers" like youtuber and streamer is the new norm and people only care about that to decide if they want a game or not, so review / discussion is, for them, useless now.
A large part of Epic is also owned by Tencent, and I don't think I need to explain why this is bad.

Epic has been going into a very aggressive exclusivity method to force people to play on their launcher. They know their plateform is bad, so they just use the Tencent money to buy exclusivity deals on games and force people to play on their launcher if they want to play a game.

It's also funny how Epic constantly moans about Steam 'monopoly' but are slowly buying exclusivity and developers to create a monopoly of their own.
This is not healthy competition against steam, or others (like GOG). Real competition should give you a choice.
You want to offer a new store alternative? Then make it good and give people a reason to go there, by making a quality service, not by making exlusivity deals to force people to go there only because they don't have a choice. This is really only bad for the PC market, as they try to fragment it and make it more and more like consoles.

I also constantly see people praising epic for the famous "12% VS 30%" revenue sharing thing, but a lot of people ignore a lot of revelant informations, like the cut with epic that goes directly to youtubers and streamers with their "epic game creator code", I think I remember reading that up to 20% of the sales were shared with "content creators", because that's how Epic decided to promote their games.

I just see the Epic / the Epic Game Store as a huge sketchy, dishonest and unfair platform. Luring people with the infinite china money for free games in the hope that they just get used to their launcher really sucks imo, it doesn't improve PC gaming.
It's too bad because Unreal Engine is amazing though, they are doing great work with this, but it's a shame that it's attached to such a tainted company now.

It's fine. Gets the job done, and I have a pretty sizeable library of free games that I'll get to one day.
The only thing I genuinely hate about it is the lack of preloading.

The fact that users don't want competitions in the pc game distribution area is weird. And yeah, exclusive is the only way that they were going to get any marketshare.

They have now started to fund games and devs from remedy, genDesign and playdead so it was just a matter of time

I don't like it...but since I get free games from them and got a really sweet deal on Control (around US$10 for the entire game), I have it installed on my PC.

Why reject games when they're given to you for free?

I don't really give a fuck what's good for Tim and his company though. You're assuming I'm rooting for either him/EGS or Steam. I'm not. I'm talking about my experience and features from stores that would make me use them/not use them. Steam is the best around, it's got the biggest library and best community features. Most of my games on PC are on Steam. My friends that I play with are on Steam.

That's their (EGS) challenge to get me to give that up, and they chose to do paid exclusivity. In my case and many others, it didn't work. I'm not saying it's a bad business decision for Tim to do the paid exclusivity bullshit, but that doesn't mean that I like it, or have to like it. It's shitty for consumers, and that's an objective fact. Because of that, I boycott using the EGS. So instead of them getting the occasional sale from me, they get nothing. I'm sure in their number crunch this must make sense for them to continue to do it. But again: I don't have to like it, and I certainly don't have to support it.

What if EGS instead focused on something like achievements giving you free DLC to the game they're related to? That way if you play the game on EGS, you get free DLC for it. That's a nice incentive without making anything worse for anybody else, and would get my attention. That's the kind of stuff I could respect and would get me to move over, not just giving people money to not make the game available anywhere else.

nope. i'm not assuming anything. i'm just telling you why epic is doing something you don't like. it may not work for you. but it's the best thing they can do to compete with steam. the kind of stuff you respect is not what moves the needle

If I could choose, I would definitely use only one platform to maintain my library of games, friends, and achievement progression. In a matter of functionality it is undeniable that Steam is at a very high level, while Epic Games is far from offering a complete experience to users.
Epic Games is a marketing company while VALVE is a company that has built its reputation throughout history. That's why Steam doesn't have to distribute free games every day to attract new players.

as long as there is no family sharing I will not buy any game on there... I'm not buying multiple copies of a game just so everyone in the household can play it with their own profile... like WTF? same reason why I would never buy a game on Origin or Ubisoft Connect

but the free games are nice lol

Their launcher is still a decade or two behind the competition but if I want something and its only on EGS then I buy it there.

Fortnite must really make bank for them to decide it makes more sense to buy exclusives and give games away for free than it does to invest a pittance in bringing their storefront into the 21st century.

Yes I know. What I meant was that people love the fact that you can just store gog games install files offline or copy and paste them to wherever you want and there is no protection at all.

The idea of loyalty towards stream doesn't make much sense to me. Steam is a store, not your friend. If you don't want to buy anything on the EGS because you disagree with it's funding from Tencent, then more power to you.

But if you're simply trying to buy games, then I don't see why it matters so much where you're getting them from. Personally, I don't want to see any one service like Steam have a monopoly, as that almost never turns out well.
