Sony feeding Japan, gonna be fun when they're big Japanese hitters arrive.

Speaking of big Japanese hitters, Monster Hunter Switch about to crush the Charts.

Base Switch stock problem as nearing MH Rise launch date. Nintendo is going to restock in huge amount of base Switch hardwares during MH Rise week.
Nice to see the Lite selling more though. I honestly like the Lite much more but the thought of playing something like Splatoon or BOTW only on handheld makes me sad to think about so I’m stuck with the normal switch.

Much better PS5 stock than I was expecting. I wonder what the baseline will be when supply finally normalises.

NNNOPE!

Why do Xbox guys on youtube keep saying that PlayStation has been overtaken by Xbox in Japan.... where do they get this stuff?
Probably just going off of stuff like the Amazon JP top sellers list which generally seems to have the Series S on there from time to time. As much as Xbox tries to get a foothold in Japan they never will. It's too Western (and well American) of a product and not in a good way that can resonate with them like Apple. If anything is going to sell it's going to be the Series S, but Nintendo and to a lesser degree PlayStation are basically parts of Japanese culture at this point.

Rakutan had no ps5 restocks last week, I thought it might be an indication that xbox might win a week because there would simply be so few ps5s available for the week, maybe other people extrapolated to something it wasn't

First PS5 Title in the Top 45, as we just got an update for Spider-Man, the game has surpassed 10K sales this year(missing Week 1), Demon Souls is also between 7-10K but don't have exact numbers from this year.

By the end of the Quarter I should be able to create a Top 50, since there is a bunch of games launching that will make the Top 50 - Rise, Densha Go, Jack Jeanne, Apex Legends: etc

Rise will make Capcom the #2 Publisher easily overtaking Konami who currently hold this position. Overall first week physical sales are looking to be in the region of 1.6 to 2 million. It's extremely plausible that Monster Hunter Rise becomes the biggest launch on the system outperforming New Horizon which launched with 1.8 million physical sales.

Marvelous just surpassed 300K for the year, with the first patch to Olive Town - they are hoping to resolve issues around the game and especially the long load-times. Next patch is scheduled in April probably before Golden Week. Right now Olive Town is their 4th best selling game of all time and has a decent chance at taking 1st place by early April. Due to it's leggy nature and additional content planned, it's still early to count it out as a potential million seller in Japan. Although to me it seems like Rune Factory 5 will be their big break-out this year as it's launch is likely to be over 300K if they don't run into bad WoM again.

In terms of Bravely Default 2, there were supply issues this week - so you can expect some growth for the game next week as Square finally stocked a decent amount across retailers. The game should finish with over 150K physical sales for this Quarter, and due to good WoM should have no problems eventually surpassing the previous entries.

Like I mentioned a few weeks ago Little Nightmares 2 is the biggest game for Bandai Namco this quarter, there is a good chance that the game is able to surpass 100K on the Switch alone demonstrating great franchise growth.

True that. No shortage of big games. But if it goes long into 2022 there could be big trouble. I'd expect GTA VI to get announced next year with a 2023 launch. That will up demand big time.

I think a lot of Japanese third parties are waiting for the PS5 to build up it's userbase. The sales of FF XVI would be quite limited it it launched this year.

Also wouldn't be surprised if we get DQ XII next year with a PS5 SKU.

Wii Games vs Ring Fit Adventure
  1. Wii Sports - 3.724.565
  2. Wii Fit - 3.561.787
  3. Wii Sports Resort - 3.165.464
  4. Ring Fit Adventure - 2.452.076

Ring Fit Adventure sales in Japan by Quarter:
  • 2019 Q4: 495.639(new)
  • 2020 Q1: 249.488(-49.66%)
  • 2020 Q2: 328.387(+31.62%)
  • 2020 Q3: 528.581(+60.49%)
  • 2020 Q4: 484.820 (-8.27%)
  • 2021 Q1: 365.071 (-24.69%)
Ring Fit Adventure Annual Sales:
  • 2019: 495.639
  • 2020: 1.591.366
  • 2021: 365.071
Year over Year, Ring Fit Adventure is up 46% for the Quarter with two weeks left,
Right now Nintendo is shipping large numbers of Ring Fit and it's availability is greater than previous weeks. The next two weeks we will see how high it could go and to what degree it's still creating demand. So the game is looking like it will hit around 450K for Q1 which would actually be around 80% growth YoY.

Still 2021 will be another strong year for Ring Fit Adventure where it will likely outsell Wii Sports, end of the day Wii wasn't all that successful in Japan compared to the Switch, so Ring Fit has the advantage of being on a system which will easily surpass 20 million by Q3 of next year. Its looking like 2021 will be the peak year of the game and I think it will end up with around 2 million sales in it's third year on the market, which as far as I know would be a first for any game in Japan.
The game is on track to surpass 4 million sales in 2021.

10:1 should be safe estimate because of stock issues currently suffered by base Switch.

NSW : 250-350K
PS5 : 20-35K

My friend will be ready with a bottle of champagne.

He's also confident that MHR on Switch will outsell MHW on PS4. And he's also quite conservatively positive about MHR outselling MHW on console + Steam.

What are your thoughts on MHR vs MHW sales figures?

Are Nintendo's numbers actually higher than all other publishers in the top 10 combined?
Nintendo has almost always been Japan's biggest publisher. But in the past four years that gap has widened as they have been giving all their support to the market leading platform, while many third parties have only been giving it weak support.

Now the majority of third parties are onboard with Switch, so the gap between Nintendo and other companies will probably decrease.

In Q1 this year Third Party Publishers will outsell Nintendo & Pokemon Co in Japan on the Switch, third parties should achieve over 3.5 million sales.
Monster Hunter Rise, Momotaro, Olive Town, Bravely Default 2 combined will be at around 3 million, while Sakuna, Age of Calamity, Little Nightmares 2, Fitness Boxing 2, Human Fall Flat will add a further 275K, there are enough left over titles in the 10-40K range to ensure overall 3rd Parties have a very strong Q1 on the Switch surpassing the total Third Parties sold on the Switch in 2020.

Famitsu Switch 3rd Parties 2020 Top 10:
  1. Momotaro Dentetsu (Konami) - 798.819
  2. Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town (Marvelous) – 248.990
  3. Minecraft (Microsoft) - 149.402

Currently we are at 1.76 million among the Top 20 Third Party games on the Switch, with Monster Hunter Rise, Densha GO! & Jack Jeane seemingly making the Top 20, no game in the Top 20 will be below 10K sales.

Yes that will give a huge boost to third parties, plus there are quite a few small/medium sized tiles over the next few months that will keep their sales ticking along nicely.

What is interesting for me will be the final four months of the year. For third parties we have almost nothing announced for then so far. Will the strong lineup so far continue into the holidays? Or will it peter out?

Yes this will definitely be Switch's strongest Q1 so far for third party support. April looks a bit dry but May/June/July look really good and there are a few 'Summer' games still to be dated.

So it seems like eBaseball Professional Baseball Spirits 2021: Grand Slam will be a Switch exclusive. Quite a turnaround for Konami considering that the franchise has mostly been PlayStation exclusive in the last decade or so.

I am still surprised that Mario 3D World is selling well.

PS5 on track to pass PS4 launch aligned after all the doom the Famitsu posters tried to narrate.

After all PS4 didn’t have a concurrent stock with rest of the world at launch.
PS5 will not surpass the PS4.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
Those are good numbers for the PS5. Assuming Sony has more systems available now.
Yup, I had no idea is was doing this good. Mainly because of this:

Exactly. I saw a chart somewhere that showed this.

Also...that the PS4 is still selling is pretty good. Might have a few more years left in it.

If the ps4 wasn't under supplied the last 12 months it could be near 10M by now. The amount of people who wanted to play ghost of tsutshima but couldn't even buy one second hand.

The console needs other games outside of the big titles though. Also GOW = God of War? That's never been a big seller in JP.

Uh yeh I think it's pretty premature to say "PS5 will overtake PS4". It's still selling to the hardcore base and PS4 sold more consoles in 5 weeks than the PS5 sold so far. Plus until these past 2 weeks no software charted at all (even with 37K new consoles, only 3.3K people bought Spiderman & Demon Souls at retail?.... that's pretty bad). PS3 was also supply constrained at launch but still was selling a good bit of software.

I mean the PS5 is already near to overcoming PS4 even with the supposed "flopped" launch lol
PS4 has no change at all.

Is that against the narrative created in Famitsu/Media Create threads? Yes. But that is the reality.

I mean the PS5 is already near to overcoming PS4 even with the supposed "flopped" launch lol
PS4 has no change at all.

Is that against the narrative created in Famitsu/Media Create threads? Yes. But that is the reality.
