Dog, I've been singing the merits of the WiiU ever since i got back on GAF last year.

It's such an awesome system if you go in with the right mindset and can afford to spend some cash on stockpiling the software library.

I'd like to point out too that BOTW plays fine on the WiiU, I can't speak to how it was at launch but I played it for the first time back in September 2020 and I honestly don't recall any slowdown, if there was it was minimal and didn't detract from the experience. I also say that as someone who put probably 60 hours into it on the gamepad itself, I didn't play it on the TV all that much.

I could go on and on but the WiiU is awesome if you want some obscure games, some gems, enjoy multiplayer games, or simply want to revisit some Wii games. Ignore the haters, the WiiU is a complete gem of a console.

What if you are looking to homebrew it and use it for emulation aswell as playing some underrated gems?
My "U" is hacked the best I can atm.

My personal set up is basically:

*VW loaded with all my favorite retro Sega, Nintendo roms and emulators.
*Nintendont- again my favorite GC games.
*HD hooked up with a ton of the best Wii games as well as some obscure stuff.
*Mame- lots of good old arcade shit, it's where we discovered Cadillacs and Dinosaurs lol. Still boot it up and play with my boys for a laugh.

*I created my own Monster Hunter dash (have 2 of them) for the cfg loader.

As a lover of retro gaming I really enjoy the WiiU, a step up over the Wii in this regards.
I reccomend getting a WiiU to anyone if your focus is preserving your library and customizing the set up to your liking.
Cheers!

It tided me over till I got a PS5, also never experienced it during its life. There's some good stuff on there, though you can burn through the gems pretty quick. Still worth keeping around for some mario kart party fun, and full systems and gamepads in particular kept in good condition may be worth something some day as they start becoming rarer.

Bayo 1 and 2 are good, little inferno is a little indie game that's fun. Black Ops 2 is probably the most active FPS left on the system. I killed 100+ hours of BoTW on the Wii U with both DLCs too.

As a Wii U owner who enjoyed the console and never thought it was as bad as it was made out to be:

Just buy a Switch, jeez.

I would say yes , do it. They are hella cheap right now and their value will only go up. Buy all the must have games and whatever else catches your eye . Itll be worth double what you paid in 5 years, especially with a good game selection. Plus you can play wii games you want to catch up on.

Does the WiiU backwards compatibility uprez Wii games at all?

Wii games look pretty nasty thru component on my setup. I tried running wii thru the ossc but my tv doesnt support 960p.

Nah, it literally boots into a Wii mode on a BC title, very basic and untouched BC.

How is the frame-rate on BOTW for Wii U, was a pretty stable 30 on Switch but I hear bad things about Wii U

I see people stating things about ports of 3d world, dk, wonderful 101, etc being worse on Switch. How so?
Most every game worth getting from WiiU is on switch. If rumors are true, the new switch will be out this holiday and the Zelda ports will be out this summer. Just wait and get all the joy on one system.
Even if you plan to use it for emulation, there are far better places to do it, that run better, and for cheaper (if not free depending upon what you already own).

From what it looked like early on, they both had framerate drops in slightly different areas. It really wasn't unplayable anywhere, mostly happened on big explosions and the Korok forest. Though it might be that the Switch received more performance tuning post release.

It does. I'm sure someone knows more than me on the specifics but it definitely displays them in 1080p. Some games still look jaggy as can be but something like Metroid Prime 3, that game looks insanely good blown up to 1080p, it's pretty insane how well it translates. My favorite Wii feature for the WiiU is being able to play Wii games on the gamepad. It's a small screen of course but certain games look amazing, Skyward Sword in particular. It really showcases the water color art style Nintendo was aiming for. That game unfortunately looks jaggy as hell when blown up in 1080p.

Shit , I'm in America so not entirely sure to what that translates . But when I looked on ebay about a week back I was surprised how cheap they had gotten. Like $125 or so for a system. So yeah if you looked around and £85 seems reasonable then go for it. Maybe try to find one on auction since it may be cheaper ? But you probably wouldn't save too much.

With 8GB, you will need an external hard-drive to handle game install, especially if you plan on getting Xenoblade Chronicles X, Breath of the Wild and Smash Bros that have pretty large installs. You will not be getting the charging station for the GamePad either, and I recommend having it and putting the GamePad on it every time you don't use it. It makes the experience much better.

32 GB is big enough to handle saves and installs for my 36 physical Wii U games. Everything else is on a SD card (Gamecube games, roms for old consoles).

But in the end, that's your choice of course. If you are okay with having en external hard-drive or USB drive plugged on the console all the time, it is all good.

I know how it is, once you start thinking about it you can't get the thought out of your head. But the Switch has swallowed the Wii-U's value.

Rather get a 3DS or GBA or something than a Wii-U. In one year, all the Wii-U Zelda remasters will be on Switch and the Switch Pro will be out. It's only like 3 games worth getting that you can't find anywhere else. Better to focus your attention and money elsewhere IMO.

I still have mine, though it's in the closet. The Zelda HD ports are great and BOTW is perfectly playable. I'd add Tokyo Mirage Sessions if you like Persona as it's pretty similar and was also developed by the Atlus P-Studio.

This is true. It is very slow, even compared to the 7th gen.
It is to a point but the menu is just whatever games you have on the system. It's not like the XMB on the ps3 where you have a ton of media options to navigate.

I get where people are coming from but the UI being slow has never been an issue for me because I only use it to select whatever game I want to play. I think the slowness of it is a bit overblown, but that's just me. To me the WiiU gets dogpiled on because Nintendo released it in a dumb manner and when it was released, most people had zero patience with Nintendo, myself included. It's definitely not the greatest system but it's personally one of my favorite consoles. Just clicked with me and I get a ton of enjoyment out of it.

Going to the settings to manage hard drive space etc is a pain tbh. Boot time if you have a game in quick launch isn't bad, but a full startup is definitely slower than even a 360 or PS3.

I have heard great things about this, may have to check it out, I love Persona so I reckon this would be right up my alley!

You really do love this console aye bro? It does sound great I might need to pick one up, it is £85 for an 8GB and I can pick up an HDD for cheap anyway so might get one, you reckon that's a good deal?

And yeah some people just hate the Wii U for no reason it seems, unfair tbh as it seems like a smart console which was just released the wrong way.

For the games to listed, yes you are crazy.

But if you’re going to play some of the games that didn’t get good ports, like Pikmin and 3D world, and you’ll buy a lot of Wii games and don’t have a Wii, might be worth it. Dk tropical freeze and 101 are also best on Wii U.

Also you can mod the Wii U to play cube games.

Since when is SM3DW on the Switch not a good port?

Since they sped up the gameplay ruining the flow and has worse image quality. You buy that game for bowsers fury, not 3d world. I mean, as long as you have the OG Wii U game.

Like, it's better than no port, but a lot of these ports are inferior.

The higher speed is so very welcome though. And the IQ is good, better than the Wii U version overall.

If you can afford it without stressing about it and are familiar with the software library and OK with what it offers, I think it's 100% worth it. One thing with the HDD is that you'll need a Y cable if you're running a HDD that doesn't have an external power source (most don't). My best advice is to just research the set ups or at the very least, I'll make a quick video for you showing my setup and the things I had to order extra to really utilize the system in the best way that I can. Just shoot me a message if you want.

The WiiU is a console for people who don't focus their time on AAA shooters and things like that. Its software library is a mishmash of rereleases and obscure gems but if you enjoy a variety of games, have a wiimote or two laying around and friends for local multiplayer, I think it's a system you'll really enjoy. I'm blessed to be relatively debt free and I make a decent living so I'm able to buy random titles off the eShop or used on Amazon without much thought. I absolutely love the system but I'm weird in the sense that I'm more interested in older games than I am current ones. I'm always like 7 years behind the curve, ha.

I will say though, the hate for it is overblown, it's essentially Nintendo's Dreamcast and the software library is pretty similar. It's not anywhere remotely as bad as some people make it out to be.

Nah. It feels insanely out of place when you're running in underground areas esp. at lightspeed. Definitely worse image. I own both copies, tested on A8h oled.

Go for it! Especially since you plan on hacking it. Which will let you play all sorts of games asides from the already excellent Wii U library!

I'll always miss the Wii U during it's prime, when it's services such as Miiverse were up and active. Right now the Wii U feels "dead" because of the closing down of such services :[ It is what it is, but the games are still very much worth playing!

I've been interested in getting one to mod it for a little while now but like mostly everything these days, the prices are a little too high. There's also the fact that most of the listed pre-owned consoles on ebay look like crap all scratched up and dirty.
