[TechRadar] Xbox Series S is now a real threat to PS5

I’m beginning to really wonder about this increase in articles lately. The XSS is fine for what it is, but I don’t know about it being a threat to PS5 or even XSX. Also, from what I’ve heard, the new Bethesda games won’t probably make a difference until several years from now. I’ve heard some rumored release time frames that are frightening.
I'm sure even if that's the case Microsoft can just port and enhance some existing IP (they are already enhancing with patches, but those are recent games)

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are easy targets for a proper "HD remake", as is Oblivion and Morrowind, I guess. And they can even outsource those. Fallout 3 game of the year is really expensive on X360, a testament to how good it is supposed to be.

And some games can be to gamepass like what Breaking Bad is to netflix. They can be evergreen, something that always brings a lot of traffic and costumers. A conversation piece of sorts. From what Microsoft does, I don't think Halo and Gears are, but Forza yes.

Not to say that Bethesda was a good purchase and it'll pay itself fast, I'm not qualified to make that guess/claim/judgement. But before they had Bethesda, well, thing's looked grim when it came to lineup capable of moving a platform-agnostic gamers in any way.

I don't know about right now but later on it will be.

You have dense not to realize the Series S is going to be the massive sale/promotion device for xbox. None of us her on a gaming forum are part of the market it's geared for... That thing will be eaten up by casuals when it's on sale for $200.

$199 with a massive library at hand fom 6 month gamepass card. That thing will be monsterous.

Totally.

It's like when Wii was announced. Most core gamers laughed. Even IGN had that article saying it's bad.

Yet at $250 and a focus on casuals it sold more than PS3 and 360 hitting 100 million units.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
?? Last time I've checked PS5 DE and Xbox Series S are both digital, aiming for the same gamers.
There's some other differences. I think we all know this by now tho.

Series S is for ppl that dont care about the specs, PS5 DE isnt.

Over here in the UK, the XSS is readily available from all major retailers, unlike the PS5 and XSX which always sell out in minutes. That either means that supply is exceeding demand, or (as I said in another thread) no fucker wants them.

And now I think about it, those two options are actually one in the same.

Also, with the limited stock the Series consoles are already lagging behind in sales vs PS5. So that means even less ppl have one than MS would like.

If its gonna be a threat when the gen is almost over.....thats kinda like saying the Wii U wasnt an 8th gen console. And some legit argue the Wii U was in the same generation as the PS360 and Wii.

Word of mouth might be Series consoles downfall. MS pr is gonna have to work overtime this gen.

Thanks Phil for handicapping an entire gen with a box nobody is even buying.

That was fixed.

Not a good sign, but it's too early to tell.

Xbox Series S sales probably won't come from early adopters unless they're buying stepdown consoles (like one for the attic, one as a companion to the Switch/PS5, one for the nephew with a tight budget and so on).

It's success is indeed tied to Gamepass. If Gamepass blows up and it is widely available, then it'll sell plenty. Otherwise it needs multiplayer games and free online connectivity.

Think of it like this, if you want Gamepass and the cheapest console to use it, then you're buying XSS.

It's the same public that bought things like the:

Wii Mini (shitty, no component output, no sd card... nothing)
12 GB PS3 Super Slim
4 GB Xbox 360 Slim/E
8 GB Wii U's

Probably a few other examples.

Are they available now. I can't find one, was going to get one for my daughter.

Well if it's not sold out in Germany, it must not be sold out everywhere else.....and the article must be paid for by MS. (Insert giant rolleyes here)

Also it's clearly a console for casuals, they aren't lined up at GameStop to buy one, they grab when when it's available, when they happen to have the money, or see one in a store, or happen to browse to check. In NA, they just filled channels with a large restock, its not sold out yet, but it will be.
Well he linked German Amazon maybe because he thought if in the largest market in Europe with 70milion people and many neighboring countries ordering from Amazon.de it's still available then it's probably because not everyone wants it. But I guess because it's console for casuals it isnt sold out. I just have a question, is every switch owner hardcore ? Maybe, because it seems that thing even after 3 years in the market still there are places that it's sold out. So many fucking hardcore gamers even my neighbor son who is 5 and has a switch lite he must be top hardcore.... what else we are going to hear to justify why Series S is not selling like crazy?

No need to justify anything - while the article is wrong in that ps5 is at risk, the s will continue to sell very well. Every single series s that is made between now and Christmas will sell, ms won't have to sit on anything.
If for some reason it stops selling, they can easily go to $249 or $199.

Sure? Since launch I saw Series S in the stores, physical stores, but never I saw a Series X or Ps5. But maybe it's different in America. Here in Spain most casuals don't know what a Xbox is. So even a casual here prefers a 500€ Ps5 than a 200€ Xbox. But again, I understand it will be different in other markets.

Because now Fallout and Doom are for casuals. Exactly the same target as Wiisports and Mario.

That's the main problem of the reasoning about Series S success: maybe its price is for casuals but not Microsoft's catalogue of games.

Why do you have to throw in an easily disprove-able lie like that mate?

That link covers the Series S as well and it’s only in stock at Amazon for RRP (£249).

AO have a bundle with an extra controller for £80 more than RRP. This came back in to stock t-o-d-a-y.

Doesn’t Gamepass effectively makes it just as easy to leave the ecosystem as it does make it easy to join? You’re really only leaving a subscription behind, the games aren’t yours. Leaving shit you own seems like an harder task.

I would wager the amount of people holding out on a XSS to get the PS5 DE are in much greater number. For 100$ more you get the real genuine.

....you do know it's 2021 and stock is easily checkable on the interwebs right?

So, tell us, how many Series S consoles have been sold? The demand is super low in comparison, so Microsoft is making them a low priority.
You need help reading? Your reply doesn't make any sense so just reaching out with a helping hand.

Unless I got sleepy and mentioned how many anything was sold. Regardless, don't hesitate to reach out little buddy.

The Series S stock always sells out the slowest despite being severely quantity limited. Pay attention better, little buddy.

Again... Didn't say anything like that (Thus saying learn to read). Obviously you still haven't.

I'll break it down to you... Someone said "said toy" was in stock, I replied with "you know you can check stock online" to see (ready for it) if they are in fact "in stock" or not.

Lol I didn't even say they are not in stock or attainable.

Now run along and troll someone else junior. You are derailing another topic as usually.

At that exact moment, maybe. But, it IS the most easy to find next-gen console (if you can even call the Series S that), by a long shot. Move along, little junior buddy munchkin kiddie-poo.

Hey, look.

That didn't take long.

I'd HATE to make this a Gamepass thread but well, actually, technically mobile devices are now a real threat to PS5 since you can get GAMEPASS ULTIMATE and just stream the games on your mum's phone.

I mean sure, it can hit Sony with software sales. People will still want their ps5, and a cheap Xbox just to play the exclusives is appealing and then MS has you probably trying out game pass too.

It also isn’t rocket science what MS was doing. I’ll probably get one at some point.

Any serious gamer who plays on PlayStation isn't going to drop it to stream Xbox games on a cell phone.

People need to understand that tech sites keep publishing these insane Microsoft PR articles because Microsoft is literally paying them or because the journalists want to cultivate ties with Microsoft for career reasons.

PS5 user buys Series S. Game Pass takes up more time than 2-3 good exclusives a year. More time on Game Pass equals less overall software sales for Sony. Hmm, try a game for $60-70 bucks or wait for it on Game Pass? It's a threat to their overall revenue. Casuals make up the vast majority of sales, Game Pass is perfect for casuals even more so than the hardcore. It's logic, anyone who can't see this and wants to do a laughing react to this fail to see the simple logic. Outriders is a perfect example. If you owned both consoles, where are you playing it?

Or maybe they actually believe in what they write? Can't take even a single article that suggests that Sony might have some competition without saying it was paid for is pathetic.

Except this isn't "a single article," literally every US-based tech website has been churning out these Gamepass hype articles for months.

Xbox Series S is an easy sell to a parent or casual, but for a semi-educated gamer it makes a great case for a digital PS5. For a mere $100 more you get double the memory and true next gen specs.

Threat is a bit clickbaity...but the value is definitely going to skyrocket with the Bethesda acquisition.

So what you are saying is that when MS starts advertising that the new Starfield is going to be on GamePass day one it won’t make a difference?

Game Pass is a hot topic. It is an awesome value. When game news is down because there are no huge releases, it's only logical for it to get this much attention. What else are they going to write about?
Gamepass may be "an awesome value" for children, college students, and the unemployed, but for the vast majority of adult gamers the limiting factors on gaming are time and whether there are any games out you're interested in, not money.

So casuals? So the people who make the majority of the market? So there is a threat? lol

Edit: And all I'm saying is that Series S and X will be a much bigger deal than Xbox One. I am not declaring them a winner, but they will cut into PS5 games sales much more than last generation.

Totally. But when it comes to electronics, there's always going to be a big chunk of the market that buys the value proposition. They either dont know or dont care about having the best gadget at the highest price.

If someone needs to buy a toaster, you can find one for $20. There's also 50 other models that go all the way up to $100+ for those ones that look like mini-ovens. Who knows what the fuck those do, but my Black & Decker toaster cost me $40. Good enough.

For any naysayers, I'd like to see the list of things you buy at the store and verify how many of them are the highest priced product on the shelf. I bet most people buying stuff skew to average products which look like a good enough product at a decent price.

When I got my 4k TV in 2017 (Sony 900e) it was $1800 at Costco Canada. I could had paid $3000 and get the first batch of OLEDs, which definitely seem snazzier with impressive black levels. The picture quality on the demos looked great. But I wanted to save $1000 even though I could afford OLEDs.

Next time I get a TV, I'm actually going to scope out TCL or Vizios. They seem to get good reviews and a 65" tv is $1000. Might be good enough too when its time to replace my tv later on.
