Disco Elysium: The Final Cut Refused Classification In Australia

Shame, I was looking forward to this one.
According to the rating explanation page, a product will be refused classification if it "contains content that is very high in impact and falls outside generally-accepted community standards." The refused classification will mean that, without alterations, the game cannot be sold in Australia.
This seemingly only affects the new version of the game, as the original PC version of Disco Elysium is still available on Steam in Australia, as it has been since its launch in 2019. Developer ZA/UM may have to edit the game's content if they want to get past the rating board in Australia.

Damn, is the bonus content really so bad? The original is available there.

Australia is so weird with this stuff. I thought you guys were cool.
Our country and media has been run by 1980s style “won’t somebody please think of the children” religious right wingers for the better part of the past 20 years

On the one hand i thought that they just tried to protect their people but when i look closer i ask myself: "Is it even necessary to this extend?"

You mean the same board that gave Atelier Rorona a 18 ratings for "High Impact Sexual Violence!", shockedpikachu.jpeg.

I hear all the time how Australians are non-politically correct, but man they do have sticks up their asses about video games

I assume it was some kind of "pro-drugs" issue with the game. Thats what stopped the international version of Saints Row 4 from getting released out here. Im still mad about that.

Ahhh yes, the joys of your government telling you which videogames you as an adult aren't allowed to play

Religion is even in the minority here but those in charge force their values onto everyone else.

Why do they keep getting elected if their views don't align with majority?

I’m already looking into trying to purchase this on PSN with an American account and a US gift card.

It seems like US PSN gift cards are hard to come by? Where is the near place to get them?

Don’t worry. Our country and media is run by 1980s style “Orwellian big brother” extremist left for the better part of a decade now.

We can both wallow in misery by retarded political groups.

It's because you're rewarded for illicit drug use from what I read.
I have not played the game yet but from what i understand you can drink yourself to death in the game.
Or you can kill yourself with other drugs. I'm not a 100% sure about this.

Australia is even worse than Germany for game censorship
Germany has actually gotten a lot easier on the ratings.
It is not like it used to be anymore.

Sure if you compare it to other countries in the world you will see differences.

Afaik Germany is improving and they're not so sensitive anymore about showing realistic blood or swastika's in historical games.
Fucking finally. Perhaps we can finally start to get WW2 games that don't constantly misuse the iron cross, that is still in use today, again.

I've always bought foreign currency PSN cards from playasia - they don't tend to put much of a markup on them.

It’s a shame y’all can’t just laugh at “neckbeards” for this like they are doing for the Super Seducer thread.

Funny how censorship is always ok if it is a private company deciding but bad when it is the result of an elected body representing the will of the people.

Our options are limited. It always comes down to two parties and their is no good party.

Edit: The options aren’t bad, they’re just boring.

Private companies deciding they don’t want to sell a product and a government making a decision for an entire country full of people aren’t the same. Australians will have to take large steps to access this game uncensored. Steps that i don’t think the average gamer will be bothered to take. If you honestly can’t live without Super Seducer 3, it’ll be easy to get it somewhere else.

They're both bad. But government censorship is a bit more dangerous.

Seems related to drug/alcohol abuse.

So... can we say the Disco Elysium localization failed its electrochemistry skill check ?

Censorship from a private company is indistinguishable from gov censorship if said company run a monopoly.

Just some context on the Australian classification system.
It's not censorship, they stopped censoring things in the 80s. It is purely a classification process.
You can't however sell media that has not been classified. That's on every state and territory's statutes.
The classification board, a federal body, has some particular rules e.g. no depictions of rape or sexual assault.

Refusing classification for breaking these rules usually means they want a written justification from the distributor/producers for why you need to break those rules, e.g. it's essential to the story, it is low impact, it is done in an unrealistic or comic way, etc.. The board just needs something they can use to justify allowing something to break the guidelines e.g. Irreversible has a depiction of rape that is essential to the plot of the movie so it was allowed to pass.

Now rape was banned in the early 80s due to the large volume of porn depicting sexual assault that many community groups arced up about. In the 90s depictions of incentivised criminal activity and drug use was banned due to right wing political outrage. Games like GTA would get around it by claiming it was done in an unrealistic manner for humorous effect and that the game punished you for criminal activity by sending the police after you. Bioshock got round the incentivised drug use by claiming you were acquiring super powers and not injecting illicit drugs.
Hotline Miami 2 featured rape and the distributor didn't argue their case so was refused a classification.

Regardless if the distributor doesn't argue their case the classification board's hands are tied.

They're both bad. But government censorship is a bit more dangerous.
It is not if private entities can censor the government, which they are doing. The minute Twitter banned Donald Trump, in defiance of the law, was the minute private entities gained more power than the public. These private entities are above the law. Face it.

They are bigger than countries, they are bigger than states and accountable to no one. We cannot vote for the board of Twitter. They effectively can silence anybody, whether they are public figures or not. This is far more dangerous than the state blocking sale of videogame content.

The reason why governments and companies ban stuff is because of community outrage.
You see most people are boring cunts.

Ever heard the expression "I disagree with what you say but I will defend your right to say it"? Don't believe their lies.

So no its not the Illuminati just the sad society made up of boring cunts who don't want you to play games with digital lolis or whatever.
