They made a video showcasing Unity and its at 24hz AND it has frame-pacing stutter/judder, truly they captured the true Unity Experience™ 🤦‍♂️

What a fucking shame, all these beautiful games ruined by some engine problem/"quirk" that will seemingly never be addressed/fixed in many titles. I'm glad I'm playing Soulstorm on PS5 although it will probably have a stutter there too.

Literally none of these games run wrong. Someone just made poor trailer with low fps for some reason.

As an environment artist ..ill just tell you flat out....i hate working with Unity and ive had to do it for entire games. Its a pain in the ass for artists and having to jump hoops to make something look good. the programmers like it though.

What do you mean by this post?

While I admit to having some of those "Oh, @#$*ing Unity Engine glitches..." moments, I have liked a lot of what's created in Unity Engine too, and have been really rooting for it to have a good showing on next-gen platforms. I'm still looking forward to seeing projects on 2021.1 and beyond, and hope Unity has an answer in the works for UE5.

Unfortunately, it looks like Unreal is just totally dusting Unity, to the point that there are shockingly no "name-brand" games in the showcase trailer aside from maybe Oddworld. (*Not that there are no good games in the mix or no games that push graphical boundaries, but the biggest names using Unity in a showcase reel are self-publishing independent studios, and a good number of the showcase titles are from first-time developers That's not a flex of how widely-used your engine is if so few names ring a bell in a celebratory showcase.) I mean, let the best engine win, ultimately, but I still want it to be a competition (I'm not comfortable with Unreal just cornering the market outright, even if it is really good at what it does) and it's always good to see two approaches at circumstances so that interesting and hopefully unique results come out of both.

I was hoping to see some wow-factor in the new GDC presentations from Unity (and Unreal) now that the two next-gen consoles are out and PC GPUs are pushing new boundaries, but everything has still been quiet since the UE5 unveiling and UE4 meanwhile has continued to leave developers with few reasons to not use it. Good luck, Unity, you're gonna need it.

Something else to add to conversation: it was really interesting to see Insomniac Games (who do not use Unity Engine to make games, unless maybe some of the VR projects were on Unity?) in the Unity Developer Showcase. Insomniac artists use Unity ArtEngine to work on specific graphical elements of their games (ArtEngine is engine-agnostic,) then plug the results back into their own game engine, sort of like as their Photoshop for scan-data and AI-assisted asset generation and UpRes.

Interesting that they're looking at singular features of it as tools useable even if they don't ultimately use the entire Unity platform or run the game on the engine.

Out of curiosity, by "jumping hoops" do you mean the workflow in Unity is not good or it's something else?
How does it compare to other engines?

yes especially with shader creation, material flow and lighting. I turn down gigs now if i have to do anything myself in Unity..though i have a full time job now so i dont need to.

Unreal is a joy to work in. Fortunately lots of japanese studios have switched over to it making working easier.

100%.

I adore UE. Been a few years since I've had hands in engine, but I miss so dearly.

Unity was always a damn pain. Oddworld and the Moon Studios guys likely fought like wild beasts to bend that engine to their will. It was NOT easy to get something looking as good as those two games running great on Unity a good few years back.
