Phil Spencer confirms that some new future Bethesda titles will be Xbox and PC exclusive

"MS doesn't need to recover the acquisition costs"
"MS does not need PlayStation sales"
"MS is playing the long game"

Yet the same people can't explain why MS said that only "some new future games" will be Xbox/PC exclusives and why they haven't said that all Bethesda games will be 100% exclusives to Xbox/PC, now that there is no more legal binding post acquisition. lol
Deathloop, Ghostwire and Doom PSVR are not coming to Xbox so your second statement would literally be a lie.

Of course they could say something like, "bethesda games will be 100% exclusives to Xbox/PC*"

*except for Deathloop, Ghostwire, Doom PSVR.."

Doesn't quite roll off the tongue so easily right?

I'm sure they could have found some phrase that would have satisfied you but they didn't. Now anyone can take their own guess as to why they didn't. I still stand by my prediction that they will be slowly integrated to XGS. That means some of the games in their current pipeline will not be exclusive.

MMO type games, remasters and ongoing contracts = multiplat

Anything new = exclusive

I think its also just as likely that everything will be exclusive. Disney is pretty successful with that model. Don't see why Microsoft wouldn't at the very least try.

Meh, why lock yourself down either way. This way, they can use individual game announcements to build hype at key moments. Bottom line is that if you are a Bethesda fan, you are likely getting Game Pass. Or I guess you could wait around hoping the games you are waiting for will come to PS5. Look forward to extreme meltdowns as soon as the first big exclusive is announced. Now we can relive the salt many times instead of one.

It's been explained several times by several people. You're just not willing to accept it.

It's pretty obvious that Microsoft are going to do what's best for Microsoft. Ideally they want people playing their own games on their own platform.

How they do that though remains to be seen and there are a multitude of different ways they could go. Maybe they just release on xbox/pc for everything going forward, maybe they put everything everywhere with additional benefits of extra dlc for Xbox/pc, maybe some go exclusive and some go multi, maybe all new ip goes multi to get as many people as possible invested before making all sequels exclusive... The list goes on and on.

You can be damn sure though that if you are planning to have the full Bethesda catalogue as you did before on PlayStation you are going to be disappointed. You might get to play some or all of the games you want on PS, you might not. Microsoft themselves probably don't know what is going where yet. But mark my words, the market will decide and when there is anything classed as a system seller it won't be on PlayStation, whenever it is going to clearly benefit Xbox by being exclusive then it will be.

Yeesh - this thread is still going?

Phil commented clearly on this months ago in an interview... someone even quoted this earlier in this thread and nobody paid attention to it...
We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games. But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.

It’s quite simple and clear...

  • Existing games under contract / exclusivity to PS will remain intact (Ghostwire, Deathloop, etc.)
  • Everything else.. released to the Xbox Platform (GP, PC, Xbox Series)
The only way this would change is if MS and Sony reach an agreement for GP to be available on PS or via PS+/Now.

I could certainly be wrong on this as well - but IMHO - MS is making a serious investment and run at expanding GP and their GaaS offerings just like they’ve done in the past with all of their other product offerings (Office 365, Azure, etc.).

This concept of “MS can’t survive without PS user base“ is just absurd.... if people really want to play the “first party games” - then they will need to transition to the Xbox Platform....

Yep, This is basically all that can be agreed on at this point.

Personally, I've seen MS state too many times in the past about how a game will only be available on their platform (Bioshock, Lost Planet, Ninja Gaiden, Mass Effect, Cuphead, etc.) only for it to come to PlayStation later down the line. History will no doubt repeat itself, so I'll just sit back and wait (and enjoy the meldown when it happens).

Where in anything of what he said you take "anything new = exclusive" ? Some people can't just read

With the addition of the Bethesda creative teams, gamers should know that Xbox consoles, PC, and Game Pass will be the best place to experience new Bethesda games, including some new titles in the future that will be exclusive to Xbox and PC players.

------------------------

First of all he says the NEW Bethesda games will be best played on PC, Xbox and Game Pass. That right there alone tells us they won't be exclusive to those platforms, only they will be "better experiences" on PC, Xbox and Game Pass. And then he goes on to clarify SOME NEW games in the future will be exclusive to Xbox and PC...

Is English your native language? I don't see any other way you can justify your poor reading comprehension .

Those are all 3rd party titles, aren't they? That's also exactly what Sony is doing (pretending that it's fully exclusive).

But other than that, I can imagine MS will release some titles on PS5, e.g multiplayer games (but they will certainly force Sony to enable cross play for those and make you create a XBox account) or semi popular games like Dishonored. But I think they will keep the system sellers, e.g. Elders Scrolls, Fallout or Starfield (unless it's gonna fail), exclusive.

They didn't pay 7 billion for you to buy these games, they paid 7 billion to get you to buy an Xbox or a Windows license or to sign up for Xcloud, once you have one of these you might but a Gold subscription, you might by Games Pass subscription, you might rent movies, you might download the free 2 play crap and start spending real money buying horse armour... Bethesda games are not coming to PlayStation until PlayStation agree to Games Pass on their platform.

I have to wonder what falls under Contractually Obligated Games.
Ghost Wire Tokyo and Death Loop are contractually obligated to launch on PS5.
Sony paid for timed exclusivity on those.

Maaaaaaaaaaybe depending on the Disney deal Indiana Jones but this one I doubt has to be multiplatform as I think this is what XGS wanted in order to try and combat the Uncharted series.

Everything else is up to XGS.

They really should tell if the Indiana Jones game will be exclusive or not. They should have told that when it was announced. I don't want this to be another Rise of the Tomb Raider situation.

Remember all the 'Why would they release on Playstation?!' posts.

Like Microsoft is doling out money like a game of Monopoly with no concern for the bottom line for the foreseeable future.

It's bizarre because a year ago people were Microsoft didn't care about hardware sales. Now they're going to leverage their exclusive content to sells hundreds of millions of consoles to catch up with Sony and Nintendo lol 🤦🏽‍♂️.
remember when Did we tell you to stay calm and don't make a fool of yourself that you would regret?

How do you go from "not making much money" to money sink. Those are completely two different things.

Let's be honest, you don't know squat about the profitability of gamepass and neither does anyone else (who doesn't work for MS). You don't know once the people on trials or deals end if the profitability will rocket. You don't know if gamepass hits a certain subscriber number that the profitability will scale much better.
I believe it's called common sense....

Interesting that games like Forza, Gears and Flight Simulator aren't massively outselling Playstation exclusives given that this is the case 🤔.
They have all sold multiple millions, while also being on Gamepass day and date. Forza also isnt on PC, well until a couple of days ago when Horizon 4 released on Steam.

Game Pass.
Ideas on here that GamePass increases sales.

Right, but how does 'multiple millions' correlate with the vastly bigger userbase you refer to? Lots of games sell millions on just a single platform.

Forza Horizon has also been available on PC for years.

Yep Horizon 3, sorry i had my Steam blinkers on lol.

If people want to play Bethesda games then I am sure you can save up a mere $200 bucks and get the Series S by Black Friday 2022. or just download the Xbox app or get a Xbox streaming stick. Its really not that big of a barrier to entry.

Right, so what were the total sales..?
According to this article it was at 10mil sales (not users) at June 2019 -

Cant imagine what its sold now nearly 2 years later.

EDIT. Wow Halo 5 sold 6.6mil copies in its first week according to that article, so much for the game flopping.

Everything is a flop according to people solely because MS doesn’t update sales numbers after launch for the most part.

A bunch of games that “flopped” have very high player counts and quietly sold a lot more than most people suspect, it seems.

Of course they aren't selling more units when they are pushing gamepass. How is that confusing and hard to comprehend to anyone is beyond me.

Sea of Thieves a prime example of that. You see people constantly say it was a faliure, yet it hit 10mil users on Jan 2020 according to that article (and i remember Microsoft saying it too), and the game rarely leaves the top 20 on Steam.

0 obviously.

Steam release seems to be selling 0 copies as well.
It's a simple question. The point made was that the combined Steam and Xbox userbase was much bigger than on the PS5. No need to be such a snowflake 😢.

Yeah so that's my point, they arent significantly higher than sales of PS5 exclusives despite what you said about the the potential customer base of PC and Xbox combined dwarfing the numbers PS5 can only dream of reaching - in fact they're quite a bit smaller than the biggest PS5 exclusives.

I already made the point than many people have pointed to devs saying sales increased due to their games being on GamePass, and the fact that you get a discount if you're a subscriber and you decide to buy.

Maybe actually read the thread before making rash statements.

Well 'potential' is the key word there. PC + Xbox users ARE a much bigger userbase than Playstaion, in fact bigger than Switch and Playstation. That doesnt mean that every Xbox game is going to sell more than Playstation exclusives, some will, many wont, especially with how well regarded Playstation exclusives are in the gaming media. Some games are more desirable than others, no matter the platform, i mean look at the sales of Switch exclusives, and Switch numbers dont come anywhere close to PC and Xbox numbers combined. What would you play on Switch though if you didnt buy most of the game relesed?. And thats the other angle, PC gamers have literally thousands of games to chose from, right there in front of them, console gamers dont. Thtas why you often see PC versions of games start slower, and sell gradually but consistent, compared to console where that start huge, then drop off pretty quickly.

Yeah that's my point, the bigger userbase likely won't translate into huge sales, it certainly hasn't so far.

I think there are many PC gamers and Steam users who have low powered PCs aswell, or are mainly interested in a narrow band of PC RTS / MMO games etc.

Told Playstation fans a long time ago to not hold your breath. Told them to be prepared for when MS DOES make all future titles exclusive. Not sure how they are still surprised.
