[VG TECH] Mortal Shell PS5 vs Xbox Series S/X

The only resolution found on PS5 was 2560x1440.

Xbox Series S uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being approximately 2304x1296 and the lowest native resolution found being approximately 2080x1170. Native resolution pixel counts at 2080x1170 seem to be common on Xbox Series S. On Xbox Series S a form of temporal reconstruction is used to increase the resolution up to 3200x1800.

Xbox Series X uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 3200x1800 and the lowest native resolution found being approximately 2560x1440. Native resolution pixel counts at or near 3200x1800 seem to be common on Xbox Series X. On Xbox Series X a form of temporal reconstruction is used to increase the resolution up to 3200x1800 when rendering natively below this resolution.

All three consoles render the UI at 3840x2160.

Texture streaming is faster on PS5 than Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S

I have the game on both consoles and the difference in resolution isn't all that perceptible at the distance I am playing, but it's definitely there. That said, I couldn't tell the difference between both when it comes to performance since they are pretty much the same, within marge of errors. I trust VGTech and their data showing the PS5 outperforms the Series X by a hair in certain situations but I never could tell this when playing the game. Texture streaming definitely is faster on PS5, but it's not like it's an issue on the Series either. Between fast and fastest, there isn't really that much difference. In that game, anyway. I don't want to downplay the speed of PS5's SSD because it really is a game changer in some games

The Series X version unanimously is the one to get this time. Doesn't happen often, let's be honest lol

It's the same res as on Pro and X1X...

Another BC patch... And Series S has shit framerate. Should have locked it to lower resolution.

Yes you are right, it seems like a quick BC patch without too much effort, but at the end of the day, the Series X version is the best one to pick for this game. Even though the PS5 is probably able to output the same resolution as the Series X, the devs didn't care to enhance it on either console and this appears to be the beginning of a trend for BC titles.

Did they just cap the fps at 60 and call it a day? I haven't been paying much attention to this game.
I checked the store, there's no native next gen version, just BC stuff? Says "although playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent".

Interesting results about the texture streaming.
While on PS5 textures are fully loaded on XSX they're still totally blurry:

This must be the first time that the faster PS5 SSD is producing better assets streaming quality?
Frame rate seems to be the same on both while peak res is higher on the XSX.
Overall as always results are really close.
lol no. I ran the game on a Sata SSD and had zero texture streaming problems.

Average 48fps? What the hell happened to the Series S? Is the DRS not working prop

PS5 had better textures in Outriders if you look at VG's google drive they show it, seems it be a recurring theme. It's just DF doesn't point it out...

Oh god, it's gonna be one of those threads where people who have no clue what they're talking about are gonna praise the super fast SSD of the PS5.

Hint: the entire game fits into the RAM at once. There is no real-time decompression or streaming going on.
Yep thats why i mentioned about running the game on a Sata SSD on PC with zero texture streaming problems. Just getting it in before the fud.

That was because of better filtering though, an other reason, here VGtech is talking about faster texture streaming.

Sorry but Series wins this one

It's odd because they said the Series S would be locked to 30 but I guess they went with an uncapped approach?

The blurry texture comparison is from right when the game loads only, kinda a weird flex

I am pretty sure this is a native port, not a BC patch? Can it run on an external HD or does it have to be installed on the SSD? This version has upgraded textures, I don't think it is running in BC mode

Yeah seems to be a native port according to their Twitter posts.
I thought it was just a BC game at first, is there any comparisons between the last gen versions? (Textures and stuff) 'cause they are full of shit about the 4k part.

I guess Dualense support is nice, however I guess they shoe horned it there and keep the OG code as it is, but hey it's free upgrade.

Most strangest thing, the trailer literally said 4k resolution in the enhanced trailer for ps5 in the features explanation. What’s going on here

It's interesting they decided to go for a fixed res on the PS5 while the other 2 consoles have DRS. I wonder what happened there.

this isn’t a BC patch, it’s a native port. You could rather say mortal shell marketing team outright lied at 4K resolution on ps5 in tweets and in trailer

The blurry screenshot is from RIGHT when you load the game and everything is streaming in. After that initial second it's gone.

Struggling with low res textures in a BC game?
Damn Bo, i know you take this stuff seriously but thats just being disingenuous. Thats some textures taking longer to load, NOT lower quality textures. Unless you think the XSX version has N64 level textures lol.
