Microsoft Bethesda purchased to be finalized today

I can't see any reason why Microsoft wouldn't make all games exclusive or at least for 6 months.

If that is the case xbox owners beta test Bethesda games for ps5 owners ;p

I'm not talking consoles. I'm talking software. They make money selling software. Skyrim, DOOM, Fallout, these are software.

BILLIONS.

So you guys really think they will take a series like Skyrim, one of the best selling games of all time, and decide not to sell to half the market? Skyrim sold 20 million, you think they are going to cut their profit from a sequel in half? Why?

You do realize that now they bought Bethesda they will make money off software sales?

How are not more people saying this? Do you guys think they don't make money off the IPs they own when they sell on PlayStation or Nintendo? Why?

If you want to play the new Elder Scrolls, there's a system for that.

Do you guys think they don't make money off the IPs they own when they sell on PlayStation or Nintendo? Why?

Are Halo, Forza, Gears, Sea of Thieves on PlayStation and Nintendo?

If they’re leaving Bethesda’s games as multiplats. Why did they buy them? They were already multiplats.

I do see starfield on PS5 (via backwards compatibility), but not the next gen versions like xbox series s|x is getting and it will probably be timed exclusive on xbox. In regards to Elder scrolls, it will probably be more profitable to put it on xbox series consoles and PC because people will buy their console and game pass which will generate a lot more money in the long run. Microsoft wants Xbox game pass to succeed really badly, so it wouldn't make sense to put their games on playstation

Basically, if the game is already being made for playstation and long in development, it will still be on playstation. If it is still early in development, it won't be on playstation.

Same reason they aren't releasing Halo or Gears on Playstation.

I truly wonder about some of you.

Will they maybe continue to release some games on Playstation from Zenimax? Sure.. maybe. They have Minecraft on Playstation, don't seem to be going anywhere with that.

MS does both.. they have exclusives and non exclusives. It should be obvious why.

- Exclusives - Well duh, they want to get people buying their actual platforms who aren't currently buying them, cha-ching money
- Non-exclusives - This is more recent for them, but they seem to also want their brand to be big outside of their ecosystem

So it'll probably be a mix...

But you are insane if you think that mix won't mean some huge games going exclusive. They aren't doing all of this to be a multi-platform console game publisher. They are doing all of this to grow their brand because they think soccer Moms will be playing Master Chief Dressup on their cell phones via xCloud while their kids play Halo on their cell phones via xCloud in 10 years. And part of that clearly includes some exclusive content (otherwise, why have any exclusives?)

This isn't how it works.

Okay, let's ignore that all-consuming profit isn't the goal here. To shareholders, the Bethesda purchase already makes sense, just based on the continued sale of old games and games in development. This is a long, long term investment at a time when interest rates are low. Giving up cash on PlayStation is not a problem.

We'll ignore all that. We don't know how far along the next Elder Scrolls game is, we don't know sales predictions or production costs - hell, we don't even know how many PS5s consoles and Xbox Series/PC/Xcloud users will be out in the wild when these games come out. Crazy idea, and I'm not suggesting it'll happen, but imagine for a second that enthusiasm for the PS5 dries out as we move into early 2022. What possible sense would it make to release Bethesda games on PlayStation? It'll have reduced faith in the Xbox brand while barely selling any new copies, when you factor in multi-plat and people that'll buy into the ecosystem for a good game.

But even if the PlayStation continues to sell like crazy, Elder Scrolls will make back its budget and then some. Could it sell more if it was on PlayStation? Undoubtedly, but Spider-man would sell more if it was on Xbox. There are benefits (to the businesses) for having exclusive titles.

But also, we all know how Xbox are going right now. PlayStation guy can play Starfield and Elder Scrolls and everything else without needing to buy any new equipment. Elder Scrolls comes out and is 10/10, game of the generation - is that guy not going to play it just because he can't buy it with the PlayStation logo on the front? Or is he going to grit his teeth, pull out his tablet and play it for less than he would have bought it on PlayStation anyway? Or is he going to boot up his PC and give it a bash there? Or download the xCloud app on his TV and play it through that?

All for less than the game would've been on PS5.

Maybe he doesn't want to buy a Microsoft product on principle. I think that's probably a vast minority, but there's not much long-term gain from appealing to that group.

I'm in the exclusive camp. They bought Zenimax to feed the gamepass monster.

They need their own content and lots of it to be less reliant on 3rd party software. Putting a large slice of their content on other platforms diminishes the value of their platform.

Isn’t Starfield current gen only? I don’t think it’s coming to PS4/XB1

Not confirmed

I'd wager it will be on last gen though. Especially if it's out this year
If they don’t announce a release date this week it’s not coming this year. I can see them unveiling when they announce their plans for the catalog the purchased. There’s barely even a screen grab available.

Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo are coming this year but not releasing on PS4. Also, they confirmed Starfield is next gen only.

Fallout 4 was revealed in June and released in November. Bethesda often reveals their games very close to release.

That's right. It's usually a couple of months window. There are extenuating circumstances this time though so we'll see.

We keep seeing this stupid, tired, and irrational argument over and over.

Sony likes money too. Please explain why Spiderman, God of War, Uncharted etc aren't on Xbox, PC and Nintendo. That's a HUGE base of gamers that would add billions to to Sony revenue.

Why aren't Nintendo games on all platforms? I'm sure Nintendo likes money.

Microsoft is one of the 3 richest companies in the world and unlike Sony didn't need to sell their Redmond campus headquarters a few years ago just to stay afloat, why are they the only ones in such desperate need of of money they have to make games for their competitors?

Because this zenimax deal is a hired gun. All of these games can be purchased on multiple consoles and multiple generations. Games that reach a status of being synonymous with their consoles are true exclusives. And I do think they will end up being exclusives because they won’t be able to stand the backlash from people like you who would probably trade in their Xbox if they don’t do it. But let’s not compare homegrown talent that is developed and nurtured with people who have made their success elsewhere and are being brought in to add volume to the smallest amount of first party games in console history. That’s why MC is on the series x box and fallout boy won’t be.

By this logic Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Guerilla games, Polyphony, sucker punch games etc are all going to Xbox because Sony would be leaving money on the table. It‘s a ridiculous notion applied to either company.

The difference is that those are all single platform developers and Zenimax is a multi-platform publisher and developer. The skills and resources are already in place, so its an entirely different scenario. Furthermore the purchase price was also based on a valuation of the going concern being multi-platform.

If you can distinguish between the two you are dumber than a box of rocks.

There is and there will be so many ways to get into the Xbox ecosystem that the PS fanbase becomes nearly meaningless in the long run.

Xbox + PC + Xcloud(mobile/TV). That's why the games will be exclusive - to grow Gamepass subs. Watch that 18 million sub number rapidly rise when Starfield, the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout are exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. You'd have to be absulutely blind or deluded to not see where Microsoft are aiming at. There's so much room to grow.

It’s very true. But ultimately they have to make these games exclusives. After the backlash they received at the price hike for gold you would see xbox trade ins and used eBay listings explode if they don’t. They have to fill out their catalog so they can raise the GP price and stop giving it away for $1

Won't really matter in 4-5 years. They'll be synonymous with Xbox and people will accept it.

Unless of course the majority of games won't be exclusive which is definitely a possibility. We will know once they make a press release next week. Gaming press will ask them until they get an answer. They can't really hide behind legal reasons anymore so if they remain cagey, we will know.

More like 2 generations. 4-5 years from now you’ll have 0 to 1 release of any of these games. It’s just like everything else though...waiting. Always waiting. That’s why they had to buy readymade instant catalog.

Define "next gen"? As a publisher so far, both their revealed titles are next gen only. They are committed to it.

They defined it in your article

Next Gen systems on their part and the fact that it's coming to next-gen consoles

Howard even says they haven't decided yet, and in a different article he says that it doesn't mean it won't come to previous gen console.

Deathloop and Ghostwire could just be part of the Sony deal for all we know

That's disingenuous. The deal was signed after those were made exclusive. Come on, you've tried this in another thread already.
Don’t sweat it. You’ll get your exclusives. I’ve already said I think they need to do it. You don’t spend 7.5 billion without a desperate necessity due to a dearth of first party output.

I can just picture you frothing, spitting and sputtering while you bang on your keyboard making your angry little posts.

I actually have no idea whether all the non-MMO games will be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem or not. I'm just hoping they are so we can all watch you and your SonyBros spin out of control if Xbox doesn't want to make games for your precious.

I think, smart thing would be to;

  • if the game development for non-ms platforms is quite far along, they should just carry on an release it on all platforms thta they were targeting before ms acquisition
  • if game development is not started, it should be developed only for ms platforms - Xbox console exclusive
  • any existing contracts re. target platforms should be honoured

i think this makes most sense from business/pr point of view

After a short window of contractual obligations and perhaps titles that are wrapping up PS development, I think MS pulls the plug on all Zenimax Playstation projects. With the possible exception of areas where they don't compete, like VR titles, and a few oddities. All the big ones? Yeah, Xbox console exclusives. Just ask yourself, "what is best for Game Pass?" "What action would bring the most subscribers into Game Pass?" That's what MS will do. I suspect they bought Zenimax for Game Pass.

You don’t think Insomniac’s purchase price was also based on them being everywhere?

MbZecTa.jpg

I doubt that Sony is concerned about leaving all that money on the table.

The value of being able to produce content for multiple platforms multiplies out the value of any self-owned IP, which in the case of Insomniac is nothing, and in the case of Zenimax is a huge amount.

Do you believe the value of a publisher or studio is the same depending on whether buying them grants the rights to all their successful IP or not? Seriously, why do you think everyone passed on WB games?

Look at this anger. My goodness. This is another reason why they have to make these games exclusives. You’d all trade in you boxes and try to sell your 3 years of gold that you prepaid to get gamepass for a dollar. Shouldn’t you all be happier?

so if you take those 20 million people who played the previous game and say "here's a sequel but you have to play it here" if you get a quarter of those players from other systems to say "well I guess I have to buy an Xbox" then the picture is different and a smart business move.

"You do realize that now they bought Bethesda they will make money off software sales? How are not more people saying this? Do you guys think they don't make money off the IPs they own when they sell on PlayStation or Nintendo? Why?"

by that logic... why do any of these companies have exclusives at all?

Why would Deathloop and Ghostwire be part of such a deal with Sony if they can't commit it to themselves or their partners? Why would Sony specifically want Bethesda to go next gen only?
