Japan has gone completely handheld and mobile gaming. This isn't news.

It is a bit surprising since PS3 and PS4 had better software sales. I'd say this is more to do with the lineup than the strength of the PS5 itself though.

Hardware sales are definitely beating expectations though.

Japan has shifted a lot recently to mobile.

What PS5 games would you expect to chart? And why do you think PlayStation gamers have shifted to mobile?
I didn't say PlayStation gamers. I said Japanese gamers. I don't live there or understand their culture, but the shift to mobile gaming there is well documented.

PS5 is still selling out as soon as they are available in every market in the world.

It's often repeated but not well documented. Switch is going to outsell the 3DS and we know that a big majority of Switch gamers like playing games on the TV. So which gamers are shifting to mobile, and which platforms were they playing on before they shifted?

I disagree. Over the years home console sales have declined even with Nintendo, did we forget Wii U? It had GREAT software, literally the same fucking games that failed in Japan, sold massive units on Switch in Japan.

Japan's gaming culture is shifted to mobile. I think Sony will do fine with software down the line of their heavey hitters, but they are not depending on Japan to carry anything going forward as its pretty much a mobile reigion now.

Literally the same Wii U games that failed in the US sold massive units on Switch. So by that logic the US is a mobile market too.

Yes having good hardware design is important and form factor is important. The flexibility that the Switch's hybrid nature provides is a major reason for its success. But equally if not more important is software.

If Japan was truly shifting to mobile games then the Switch would sell worse than the 3DS. But instead hardware and software sales for Switch will be higher, especially when you take digital into account. This is even though Switch games are priced like console games, not handheld games.

The market for dedicated video game devices rose last year and is very likely to rise again this year. How can this market be growing if apparently people are shifting to mobile?

At best you could say that Japan is shifting to a hybrid market that wants devices which can be used on the TV and on the go.

So now that we are closer to the Monster Hunter Rise launch, we can talk about the historic year Capcom is about to have.

Capcom Top 10 NSW/PS4
  1. [PS4] Monster Hunter: World (2018) - 2.575.764
  2. [PS4] Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne (2019) - 567.989
  3. [PS4] Resident Evil 2 (2019) - 418.236
  4. [NSW] Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (2017) - 379.611
  5. [PS4] Resident Evil 7: biohazard (2017) - 365.896
  6. [PS4] Resident Evil 3 (2020) - 269.187
  7. [PS4] Devil May Cry V (2019) - 189.121
  8. [PS4] Street Fighter V (2016) - 85.821
  9. [PS4] Resident Evil: Revelations 2 (2015) - 69.494
  10. [PS4] Resident Evil 6 (2016) - 54.255
PS4 - 7.595.763
NSW - 379.611

This year is a key year for Capcom, as they have the first major third party game on the Switch to launch with over 1.5 million sales - Monster Hunter Rise. Pre-orders trends and larger user-base means that Rise is heading towards a 2 million opening, which would be the highest launch on the system beating out the 1.8 million New Horizon managed. The Question mark remains if retailers and Capcom can actually produce so many copies for the launch, more realistic would be for Rise to have stock problems at launch, and the opening to be similar to New Horizon. In terms of 3DS launches, Rise with digital will blow them out of the water, initial sales for Japan with digital will likely be the biggest launch for Capcom in Japan beating out MH3 on the PSP by more than 500K units.

Top 5 3DS/PSP Monster Hunters:
  1. [PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (2010) - 2.146.467 / 4.840.930
  2. [PSP] Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (2008) - 823.265 / 4.226.265
  3. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 (2013) - 1.875.115 / 3.591.334
  4. [3DS] Monster Hunter Generations (2015) - 1.542.104 / 2.832.833
  5. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (2014) - 1.617.949 / 2.617.803
In terms of 2021, my expectations currently are above 4 million. I anticipate the game to easily surpass the 3DS's best selling Monster Hunter games. To me it's likely that this will be the best selling game in the Franchise both in Japan and World Wide by the middle of 2022. The marketing push by Nintendo and Capcom for this game has been huge. No doubt Nintendo views the franchise as a big hardware seller in East Asia.
While in Japan the jump for 3DS users from Generations Ultimate to Rise will be a pretty huge and long awaited upgrade. Future Pro enhancements will likely also mean that the game will benefit a lot in the second half of the year for people who choose to upgrade. Due to COVID it's also likely that the new edition might take longer to launch, meaning longer legs for Rise. Personally I don't expect an Ultimate/Unite/Generations version until H2 2023.

Beyond Rise, there is also one more Switch exclusive - Monster Hunter Stories 2 which again is going to see a major push by Nintendo and could very well be a game that surpasses expectations. It was supposed to come out in the summer, so the potential launch window is likely going to be July to September. Monster Hunter Stories launched on the 3DS in 2016 and managed 316.470, with MHR2 I think my expectations with good WoM are going to be at least 500K by the EOY, I think the game can be compared to DQXIS, Rune Factory 5 & SMT V - JRPGs that can sell over 500K on the Switch.
Outside of Japan is where these games currently get the majority of their sales and along with Bravely Default 2 will all end up with over 2 million sales if they are well polished and have good WoM.

We also have one multi-plat game almost confirmed, Ace Attorney is set to launch later this year, from the Capcom hack the expected launch window is the same as MHS2, not sure what the expectations for this game are until we get more details. It could be more targeting growth outside Japan if it's just remakes or remasters of the older games. If it's just older content I doubt the game can surpass 150K sales in Japan.

Top 5 Ace Attorney Games
  1. [DS] Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (2007) - 666.387
  2. [DS] Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (2005) - 565.763
  3. [DS] Ace Attorney - Justice For All (2006) - 372.304
  4. [3DS] Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies (2013) - 370.591
  5. [DS] Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (2009) - 357.122

Finally we have the launch of Resident Evil: Village on the PS4/PS5, the game again should be aiming for growth in the West as in Japan it's likely to see further decline. As one of the first major exclusives on the PS5, I will be very interested in the legs it has both in Japan and the West. Hopefully the franchise sees loses in Japan offset by growth overseas. Overall the franchise is starting to become irrelevant in Japan compared to is hey day on the PS1, even compared to the PS3 heights current Resident Evil games struggle to sell 500K physical copies. Which is probably why Capcom has green-lighted a Switch exclusive game for next year.

Top 5 Resident Evil Games
  1. [PS1] Resident Evil 2 (1998) - 2.456.651
  2. [PS1] Resident Evil (1996) - 1,806,206
  3. [PS1] Resident Evil 3 (1999) - 1.383.282
  4. [PS3] Resident Evil 5 (2009) - 1.041.195
  5. [PS3] Resident Evil 6 (2012) - 866.735
Overall with MHR, Resident Evil: Village, MHS2 & AA - Capcom should be around 6 million physical sales in 2021 in Japan, a huge growth from 2020 when they managed less than 500K sales:

Resident Evil 3 (¥7.800) - 269.187
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition (¥6.990) - 74.158
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Best Price (¥3.990) - 61.184

MH Rise G was scheduled for the 2nd half of 2022 from the Capcom leaks I believe. I can't believe that COVID would push the project back by a year.

Other than that I totally agree with you, 2021 is going to be Capcom's biggest year in Japan for the foreseeable future. Will be very interesting to see just how high their software sales will go.

"Switch "Super Mario 3D World + Fury World" has returned to 1st place. With a stable sales record, it seems that it will be a work that will join the group of standard software and make Switch even more exciting in the future.

Last week's No. 1 Switch "Story of Seasons Olive Town and the Land of Hope" is still selling well, making it the biggest hit in the Story of Seasons series."

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I didn't say PlayStation gamers. I said Japanese gamers. I don't live there or understand their culture, but the shift to mobile gaming there is well documented.

PS5 is still selling out as soon as they are available in every market in the world.
The real sparkle starter in Japan was the DS.

Nintendo DS.

Bandai's latest delay for IdolMaster Starlit Season is emblematic of their further decline thus far this year.

2020 Top Bandai Namco Games Famitsu Top 100:
  1. [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version {2019.07.25} - 207.472
  2. [PS4] Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. MaxiBoost On {2020.07.30} - 168.710 NEW
  3. [PS4] Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot {2020.01.16} - 163.029 NEW
  4. [PS4] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 {2020.03.26} - 142.670 NEW
  5. [NSW] One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 {2020.03.26} - 137.513 NEW
  6. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! {2018.07.19} - 133.978
  7. [PS4] Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris {2020.07.09} - 94.681 NEW
  8. [NSW] Disney Tsum Tsum Festival {2019.10.10} - 60.492
  9. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythmic Adventure Pack {2020.11.26 - 52.621 NEW
  10. [NSW] Jump Force: Deluxe Edition {2020.08.27} - 41.411 NEW
  11. [NSW] Pro Baseball Famista 2020 {2020.09.17} - 39.793 NEW

  13. [NSW] Kotoba no Puzzle: Mojipittan Encore {2020.04.02} - 38.018 NEW

Currently they've only launched Little Nightmares 2 and have nothing dated for the rest of the first half of the year.
Last year by mid-year they had launched 4 games that ended up in the Famitsu Top 100 and were still getting decent catalog sales from Fishing Spirits, Taiko & Tsum Tsum Festival. For a company of Bandai's size its shaping up to be a very problematic year in Japan after witnessing pretty major decline from over 2 million sales in the Top 100 for 2019 to 1.3 million in 2020.

Are they still doing the lottery system or is the better supply coming with some relief from that? or are more people allowed to buy one?

Many stores use lotteries but not all, for example, yodobashi don't use lotteries but you need a gold point card + to buy ps5.
