AMD’s Equivalent to DLSS, FidelityFX Super Resolution Is Coming to PS5 & Xbox Series Consoles

Tag, you're it.
Speaking to Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips, Linus confirmed the reasoning as to why AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution has yet to release

Nvidia may have the clear advantages over AMD thanks to it’s DLSS, but it seems that the company is holding back as it has been stated that they are launching their FidelityFX Super Resolution feature when it’s ready. This includes cross-support for the latest next-gen consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series.

"Apparently rather than rushing it [FidelityFX Super Resolution] out the door on only one new top-end card, they want it to be cross-platform in every sense of the word. So they actually want it running on all of their GPUs, including the ones inside consoles, before they pull the trigger."

It would’ve been nice to have it ready by the time the cards launched, but as we saw with Nvidia’s DLSS 1.0 versus DLSS 2.0, it could be for the best.

I'd like to be optimistic but my gut tells me this wont come close to the quality and clarity provided by DLSS.

Nvidia are miles ahead in AI and deep learning so that gives them a huge leg up in this area. A bunch of post processing and upscaling filters is not an alternative.

Happy to eat crow if I'm wrong.

Aye fire on, I don't really expect artifact-free image quality from consoles games anyway, I was happy with CBR as a slight boost to image quality over native res so if this is an upgrade over that I'll happy again. Plus, inconsistent framerates and upscaling ahoy is par for the course on console, so why not eliminate one of those problems, good stuff.

Last news was that it was not an AI solution, has that changed?

I mean, not sure what to expect without AI, a sharp filter?

LOL, you have seen their results against Nvidea and expect better on consoles, nah fam not happening but good luck.

It's just software used by game devs but I think it has to be in consoles SDK?

Based by the comments I think most of you guys don't get it... 1440p game (like ACV for example) will still be 1440p but with better IQ possibly.
That wouldn't be a replacement for current FidelityFx then. Where the whole point is being able to run a lower internal resolution to get a better framerate.

Sounds good on paper but we need to see what it actually does in terms of IQ.
If done properly can produce an image that looks better than a 4K checkerboard image and in some cases native 4K.

I’m here for it because Sony’s checkerboard implementation was ridiculous.

I don't know if it's a "Sony implementation" at all. Guerrilla engine uses their own software solution for checkerboard, it's not hardware tied. And in any case call "ridiculous" a 4k checkerboard comparable to a 1800p native sharpness, it's a bit overdramatic.

It’s not me, it’s observable in the video.

I mean, it's a software solution, nothing stopping it from running on consoles. In fact, having it ready for consoles ensures it's adoption at a much faster rate.

it will be implemented through a firmware update on consoles?
Probably more at the SDK level, if it's anything like dlss it needs to be trained.
Amped for both consoles, dlss is a massive performance boost for little or no sacrifice.
Imagine even a 25% performance boost.....
It's not a performance boots, it's a realocation of resources...your base performance remains the same.
Every technique is copyable, its just math.
AI is also data, preferably lots of data... Obviously still some neural Network behind it, copiable for sure, but how many people can copy that sort of thing? It's not like taking a website's code.

After comparing fidelityfx to dlss in death stranding, the amd solution is just sharpening on taa... Grass still shimmers and pixels still crawl. Dlss is cheaper and creates way more stable image with no shimmering or any motion clarity issues like taa.

I want super resolution to be like this

Gotta keep the people 'excited'. Also, gives me more time to pray that AMD direct restocks the 6800 XT. Hasn't been on their drops in like 2 or 3 weeks.

They cocked the zen3 and rdna2 launches up so bad they have managed to lose market share to intel and nvidia when they released their most competitive products and now their stock price is taking a hit. So frustrating to see them turn up to a gun fight finally with a gun and then forget the ammo.

Maybe I'm wrong but AMD's Fidelity isn't the same as DLSS. One functions as an amazing scaling technique, the other is a sharpening filter.

Yeah, such a shame. It's their fault and it isn't their fault as well. Kinda tough for 7nm when you suppling the chips for both Sony and Microsoft, your CPUs AND your GPUs. Wish they would've sourced some of their chips from someone other than TSMC.
