So the one game where RT Shadows may have been worth it AMD go and do bloody reflections, sigh. The way shadows float behind objects really annoy me.

It's not up to AMD what RT features a developer offers. AMD would have loved shadows, as they are actually competitive with Nvidia when it comes to RT shadows and not that far behind with RT GI. Reflections they suck at.
 
I do wonder if DLSS could fall off in case whatever reconstruction tech AMD is cooking up becomes competitive. Developers already have a pain in the ass needing to support half a dozen systems so I'm sure they would prefer a general approach that will work for all GPUs. And I don't know if any of Nvidia proprietary tech has really been adapted on a wide scale including stuff like PhysX, HairWorks and Gsync.

I don't want this to happen, mind you. I own a 2070. But I think it could happen.
 
Supposedly the RT shadows in this one are running at 1/8 resolution because that's literally all the AMD-based RDNA2 in the consoles can handle.

If they port this to PC as-is without any enhancements for Nvidia's superior RT hardware then it will be very far behind the best RT implementations. Unfortunately because of the state of console hardware, we are likely to see more ports of this lowered RT quality to PC unless the developer puts in special effort to implement a better quality RT mode just for PC's running Nvidia hardware.

What if it performs great even without it? I don't get some of you people, do you even play games or are you satisfied just booting them up to count frames?

Well there is pretty much no chance it performs great with Raytracing but no DLSS (atleast on my peasant 3070).

That obviously won't stop me from buying and enjoying the game, but no DLSS in a Raytracing game is definitely a bummer.

I'm really surprised that DLSS is so popular while people will bitch about any image quality issue like FXAA or TAA.
Maybe it's better in some games than others, but what I've seen of DLSS looked extremely bad. Cyberpunk on DLSS looks like it's running in 720p or something (even in quality mode), it's far worse than what people usually complain about with image quality. Super strange.

Even if it does DLSS is a great aa method and it gives much more performance if you want it. Its stupid nowdays NOT to include it, especially in a game with ray-tracing.

It seems you are ignoring even what beloved totally not shills at DF told you, and quite clearly.
Of four things that need to happen for RT to be turned into something palatable, only 1 step is hardware accelerated: intersections.

Creating/handling the unwieldy BHV structure, denoising / turning it image "somehow" (for "how", see what kind of insanity is going on in Quake 2 RT) into an actual render. NONE of this is hardware accelerated.

That is why AMD, despite likely beating NV in actual hardware aspect of RT (that awesome "infinity cache" thing that allows 6900XT to beat 3090 while using slower RAM and bus) is performing so bad in NV sponsored RT games, while matching or beating it in AMD sponsored RT games: there is lots of old school vendor optimized code, that has nothing to do with ray intersections.

Yes it is but it is extremely effective at reducing shimmer and pixel crawling. Especially compared to fidelityFX which still has that ugly TAA shimmer on vegetation and DLSS does not. It is super clean in motion even if it is a tiny bit blurry

Are you from a parallel earth or something?, framerate has always been king on PC, its why most PC gamers are on PC in the first place.
The difference with PC gaming is that you can usually have both, high resolutions and high framerates, if you have a capable PC.

I would call it "pragmatic" not to include it. And given the number of games that have included it, game developers agree.

So its a dumb example. Of course they can fake it well when you can't control the the camera. You've been in enough tech threads and should clearly understand the limitations of SSR regardless of what game or engine that uses it its all the same.
 
glad they added RT GI. but i have to say, other games could benefit more from that. baked version looks fine indoors. well lets wait for the outdoor areas...

Flicking between the two shots I can see a difference, it's obvious. What isn't obvious is that one is much better than the other. Raytracing doesn't really do much for me. The idea that any game would halve the framerate to offer raytracing seems absurd to me.

Let´s see how that will turn out.

I predict that Capcom will use an awfully low internal resolution for anything RT as we`ve seen it in DMC to make up for the missing DLSS performance boost and the inferior AMD RT hardware. I just hope they`ll allow decent quality levels for PC.

This is probably the one game where I'd say RT reflections are worth the performance hit, simply because the SSR implementation in RE Engine is utter shite.
For some reason with higher resolution there is much more noise in SSR reflections in RE:Engine. I think this engine is state of the art (for non open-world games at least) but SSR is fucked up.

I'm currently playing RE3 Remake and man, those reflections are so bad. Disappearing around your gun etc. It's very distracting and looks weird.

Glad they'll go the RT route here.
 
Only time I use DLSS is with RT games so will be interesting to see how this performs without it. Push comes to shove then I'll just use the FidelityFX option 🤷‍♂️

Angle, shmangle, my charged axe, everything is reflecting, lightning effects are amazing, pathetic hardware, no buzzword tech used.

What I don't understand is how it has managed to look so consistently awful for 3 titles in a row (probably 5, haven't checked out DMC5 yet, yet to see if it's bad in RE8)...or why the option to disable SSR on all but the most reflective surfaces like water, which made it workable in RE7, has been missing in every title since.

I really don`t know what you mean by weak.
Games like Control, Metro Exodus or CP2077 show what RT can already do, and in max quality at 1440p in the 60fps range with 2nd gen hardware already. The potential a developer already has at his disposal today is astounding for such a young feature.

I´d agree however, that a lot of RT implementations are just done to have that RT buzzword on the cover while the implementation itself is so limited that it could just as well have been left out alltogether.
I´m also not sure where the journey will go due to the humongous performance differences between the consoles and the PC in that regard.

i'm starting to resent AMD and their partnerships. if you don't have an equivalent techonology to DLSS then forget about dev partnerships and go back to work until you do. My next CPU might be Intel just because.

Lets say AMD did have its Super Resolution technique ready and working for this game. But it only worked on AMD cards. Would you be happy about that?

I would be absolutely fine because AMD is actually trying to compete and it would make me consider their GPUs. What AMD is doing now with these partnerships is a desperate attempt to limit DLSS adoption without offering an alternative.

They still hate shitty reconstruction techniques, which is not the case of DLSS.

Try to solve: a*x^2 + b*x + c = 0 using neural networks.

I was talking about resident evil 8(you know the thing this thread is about) and why in my opinion rt shadows in this game would have been more desirable than reflections, how do reflections in another game have have any relevance to my comment?
