Blur: 11 Years Later | Whitelight

One of the very best arcade game ever made, which got pushed to released close to Red Dead Redemption 1, which probably was a way how to ensure nobody is going to play it. It's from Bizarre creations, which is now mainly lucid which created that zoomer trash Destruction Allstars. Other people from that studio dispersed to Playground, Evolution (rip) and the Codemasters (rip).

This is story from very best game analysis youtube Whitelight. So enjoy, it's 45 minutes and well wroth the watch.

Can't watch it right now, but man I liked this game. I dislike racer and sim. games (I know this is more of a mariokart game), but this was a big hit for me and friends. Really fun.

Good concept but bad track design.
It took every bad element from Mario Kart when they just needed to copy any other Kart game.
The arena mechanics from MK don't fit with real cars, but this doesn't mean you can't have real cars with powerups, just do something like Nascar Rumble on PSX or SASRT, which is a good racing game first and only then a good MK game.

But many years have passed, so maybe my memories are blurred too.

I've bought so many copies of this game its so good I don't want to be ever not able to play it!

last of the greats

the mix of real cars, weighty physics and Mario Kart powerups is a weird combination for an arcade racer but it works, just about, thanks to the slower pace of the action...plays and looks great on PC to this day

I knew watching this would have hurt me and hurt me it did.
They were even making the sequel, before history decided to make the universe a bit crappier.
Dammit.

I remember playing this one week after Split/Second.

It felt like playing in slow motion. I should have played them the other way around.

Blur's online MP was fantastic I played the shit out of that, real shame we never got a sequel it scratched a particular itch nothing else has really managed since. Track design was so-so but it was fun as hell.

Blur was great. Played it a shit ton but what pissed me off were the constant crashes during multiplayer on PS3. And I don't mean race crashes.

Split Second I really didn't like, it has rubber banding that makes Mario Kart blush.

I am thinking of getting this for the PS3....seeing as it'll never be backward compatible, let alone getting a remastered version, a.k.a Need for Speed..

This game and Split Second, what happened? Saying that at least one of these is playable on current gen, so that's a good thing...

They were released close to each other, but mainly Red Dead Redemption happened and people overlooked it, it was a bad call....

That is only if you assume the audience for RDR1 and an arcade racer is the sale which...is probably not true?

I am farily sure that if someone has 60bucks they rather buy Rockstar game then some racer tho. I think the developer itself attract a lot of attention. Also the cross talk with marketing, internet was overwhelmed with RDR PR. So, I think it has some influence over people's minds. I think titanfall 2 would sell far more if it would not be close to Battlefield 1, GeoW 4 would also sold better.

Fair point, I admit not thinking it through.

this was once on my list of games I need to play but I've completely forgotten about it. Whenever prices go back to normal I'll pick up an X and give this a shot, fnially

Shit Second got nothing on Blur.

I can't believe I've never seen this thread before. So sorry about my thread M1chl M1chl . I have seen the Whitelight video the moment it launched but never thought about making a thread on it until later today when I saw the Driveclub appreciation one.

Now for the game, I played the shit out of it when the beta dropped and was there day 1. At the time I was an avid racing gaming enthusiast (burnout, need for speed, gran turismo, forza, project gotham racing, Motorstorm, Mario kart). I was at the time playing exclusively MotorStorm Pacific Rift, I was max rank on it and you can only get max rank if you keep winning because of their rank system (you'd lose patent with you lost top 5 for 2 or 3 consecutive races), then Blur came to take most of my time in its place.

I loved the game, I was a member of the Luminosity clan on PS. We'd spend all the weekdays training and would fight between clans on the weekends on team-based races and some individual ones for bragging rights. I got to top 50 with the rank of 44th before the community discovered the drift turbo strategy (which took a little of the fun out of the game, because everyone was forced to use only that). I still have the contact of some players that I made friends with in real life :). I was an avid rival of DuffBier (I think his name is written like that), at the time he was top 3 on Playstation and the best German player.

No problem, it's just that we don't have many thread of same thing, because that sucks when you want to search. I know that well..

Man watched this earlier and i found it very interesting. I hate the style of the narrator though, very annoying.

Great video IMO, very in-depth and fair-minded. I actually don't enjoy Blur all that much, but this taught me a lot about what people like and why maybe I didn't connect.

It could have used more color grading, but I liked a lot where Blur 2 was going, with seemingly less realistic tracks and supposedly some traffic (not sure how the multiplayer and weapons would have worked though.)

PGR2 and Blur are my favorites and would easily go on my GOAT list.
Hard to argue with that. I'd add PGR4 as well. I spend countless hours in that game. I really wish Microsoft would make it backwards compatible with Series X. It is my fav racer of all time.

One of the best "cart' racers ever. Bizarre were too good for this world.
PGR2 is one of my all-time favorite games. The quality of the online community hasn't been matched, even today. Hell, anything I've played from Bizarre was a gem... Geometry Wars, The Club, Blur... all incredibly fun and nicely polished.

My most proud 100% Achievement (1250/1250). Platinium Plus was something else, but got there in the end :)

Bizarre creations were a great developer. It’s sad what happened them. I can’t remember a game they developed that I didn’t enjoy. MSR was one of my favorite games on Dreamcast and Blur was a fun game.
It’s really sad that Microsoft didn’t find away to bring the PGR games to backwards compatibility.

anyone remember the "beta" they had on 360?
because you needed Xbox Live Gold to play it, they gave you a beta code and a 48h Online trial code. (this was not an Xbox Live Gold subscription btw. 48h online trial codes only gave you access to online MP not to any other Gold feature)

the thing was, they didn't check if the email you entered was real and simply displayed your codes right on the next page after signing up.
at the time, me and my little brother (still teenies back then) played a lot of Halo 3 and Reach online, but only my account had Xbox Live Gold (on 360 a gold membership did not count for the whole console) so he always had to play on a guest profile and couldn't play with his own account whenever we played online splitscreen.

so when this beta came out, and they had ZERO mechanisms to check if your beta sign up was valid, and I found that out... I literally sat there for 1 hour and generated hundreds of 48h trial codes so that my brother could play Halo 3/Reach online with his own account.
all you had to do is enter a fake email, press enter and copy/paste the new code into a text file, repeat for an hour and you got a shitton of codes.

I had a .txt file with 300-400 codes I think, and every time his trial ran out and we wanted to play Halo he just entered the next one :) this is how he played on Xbox Live for about 2 years. they didn't invalidate the codes or anything. Lucky us.
I bet I still have some unused ones, and that.txt file should sit on one of my old HDDs... lol i wonder if they still work?

so these are my Memories of Blur :messenger_tears_of_joy: we also played the beta a lot (I had 300 beta codes after all, so couldn't let it go to waste :nougat_rofl:)

EDIT: the waybackmachine actually has snapshots of the beta regiter site! that's so cool lol

Shit second? Can't be that bad, never played it myself so up for checking both out..

I wouldn't say bad Its just completely average and had no depth just like the other game same dev made called Pure

I played it for a day and never wanted to touch it again I honestly think people who compare it to Blur are trolling
