I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
I just realized I haven't played that many JRPGs. In fact I don't even like Final Fantasy, so, out of the top of my head...

5. Valkyrie Profile/Yakuza LaD
4. Chrono Trigger.
3. Persona 5 Royal.
2. Dragon Quest DS remakes, my fav probably being V because of the story.
1. SMT III or IV, can't decide.

Honorable mention to the Mugen no Frontier games.

This is going by the "typical" definition of JRPG. Dragon's Dogma is an RPG developed by japanese people but I don't know if that would count as a JRPG.

I can't do a list, its just way too hard but for JRPG lovers, Bravely Default 2 is a decent pick right now and we getting NieR Replicant very soon

Nice thread OP, I think my backlog will get even bigger after this. :goog_relieved:

If you want to derail a thread and make some people REALLY angry this is how you do it.:D
It counts.;)
Haha but that wasn't my intention! I swear. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

If it counts then of course that one would be on my list, I really loved that game. But then so should be Nier: Automata, and 5 positions aren't enough for so many cool games so I'll just leave it as it is.

God I love Persona 4: Golden & Persona 5. 🔥🔥 Both some of the best games made in recent years...

But I just can’t put them in cause I don’t see how anyone could possibly not include all 3 numbered KH games, FF6 and FF7 on a best JRPG list (unless you’re not into Disney or Square...)

It’s like not including every mainline Mario game on a Top 10 Platformers list or something...

I don't agree by how some people consider the term "JRPG" because it's unnecessary limited and creatively restricted. But since i don't want to derail this thread i'll play along with its pointless restrictions.

In no particlar order (trying to pick only one game from each franchise)
Final Fantasy X
Dragon Quest VIII
Xenoblade Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyrie Profile Lenneth

I mean common people there is more to JRPG than final fantasy and kingdom hearts, its like making a list of "best shooters" and having nothing but Call of Duty on your list.
Right. Which would make sense seeing as how they are some of the best shooters...

MeteorVII MeteorVII thank you for making this thread. I've only played two JRPGs in my life, and beaten two JRPGs in my life. For the longest time, ever since middle school I had it set in my mind that I would never get involved with these games. I didn't want to spend my time with this genre because I always figured it would consume me, possibly. But now, this is the genre I am yearning for the most. And it feels like there is an entire world out there for me with all the RPGs and JRPGs

1. Super Mario PRG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES + Wii VC)

2. The Legend of Mana (PS1)

OMG I loved both of these games! Mario RPG was one of the first RPGs I ever played as well.

3. Persona 3/ Persona 4

4. Final Fantasy 9

5. Final Fantasy Tactics
Ok, come on now. This is cheating.

(I know I put FF7 & Remake on the same spot as well, but at the very least it’s a Remake and not an entirely different entry in the series...)

It's a brilliant work of art, and it set the tone for Paper Mario, my favorite game of all time (along with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time both are the GOAT imo)

I played The Legend of Mana when I was 7-8 years old I think. All I can remember was an orchard with a lot of fruits (?), some underground area maybe, and the game ending unexpectedly at a boardwalk iirc. The game honestly came to an end out of nowhere it felt like, was very surprising I remember; an abrupt ending. And the strangest thing is how little I remember of this game, I always remember a ton about almost every single game I play. I think my sister beat that game too, it must have been great but at the same time it's probably way too easy of a game for a RPG/JRPG

Aside from its art style and enemy designs, there is literally nothing unique or interesting about Dragon Quest. It is the most generic, by-the-numbers JRPG series ever made.

Better the solid world and character building in well-worn but well executed JRPG mechanics (that started the genre!) of Dragon Quest than the corny friendship meets convoluted story threads wrapped in run of the mill ARPG mechanics of Kingdom Hearts.

It's like saying Family Guy is better than Bob's Burgers.

Man some people are obsessed with phrases like : best of all time! /GOTY/GOTG! OMG LMAFO!

What you like now you may enjoy less years later so GREATEST OF ALL TIME is useless, try playing more games.

What a pointless, stupid thing to say.

Yeah, I could enjoy it less or I could enjoy it more.

For you, maybe your list could change over time. For others it could be set in stone due to that special connection they had.

Stop trying to change how other people perceive things.

I don't like his list either but why are they not?
It's a good question, for myself. I played the three main Kingdom Hearts and never thought about them as JRPG. For me they are more like an action game with RPG elements. In the same way, would be Nier Automata a JRPG? For me it's an action game with RPG elements, but I'm sure that for some others will be a JRPG like Persona 5.

It's not about quality but perception about what implies to belong to a specific game genre. And I think this can vary from person to person. Today genres are very mixed and edges are too diffuse.
