About

The new System Shock is a complete remake of the groundbreaking immersive sim, first released in 1994. Players, in the space-boots of an unnamed hacker who awakes after a six-month snooze, finds Citadel Station in quite the state. Murderous robots, killer cyborgs, and malicious mutants have run amok. And the station’s AI, SHODAN, seems to have developed quite the God complex.

Nightdive has given the entirely remade System Shock the full treatment, recreating the fan-favorite title for modern players with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, revamped hacking, and a renovated Citadel Station with all sorts of new areas and secrets to uncover.

Key Features

  • The Return of SHODAN – The talented Terri Brosius returns to bring her unique vocal venom to the villainous AI SHODAN
  • Hackers Gonna HackSystem Shock features a totally revamped hacking system featuring new 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) gameplay, providing new enemies and challenges
  • Familiar but… Different – Citadel Station is bigger and more terrifying than ever with all-new areas, traps, puzzles, and of course, plenty of secrets to uncover
  • The Sound of Terror – Re-recorded audio logs provide players with a drip-feed of horrifying lore as they piece together exactly what went wrong for the dwellers of Citadel Station
  • Robots and Zombies and Lasers… Oh My – Blast, smash, and occasionally flee from re-imagined enemies like angry Repair-Bots, “Hopper” Mobile Lasers, mutants, cyborgs, and all kinds of bloodthirsty monsters and aggressive automatons

Hope they don't butcher the source material
It looks to stay very faithful to the original, down to the specific map layouts and everything.

They had at one point attempted to do a looser remake in a more modern style, but feature creep blew the scope out beyond what they could handle, so they went back to their original concept and kept it a pretty faithful remake.

The graphics are obviously heavily remade but still use low res unfiltered textures for a retro flavor and stay very true to the designs of the original. The UI and controls obviously feel a lot better, thank god.

Try the demo, it's pretty good.

The team that they brought on board originally to make the first demo for the kickstarter included Rob Waters, who was the original concept artist for System Shock (and for the Bioshock games). He, the lead artist, and the rest of that team involved in the project from the start left Nightdive after they switched engines started to depart from the vision of the original System Shock and its aesthetic. Nightdive got the original team back by acknowledging they made a mistake with the new direction, and returning to preserving the vision of the source material.

Considering the original team felt strongly enough to leave over them losing that original vision, and were then convinced to come back after Nightdive admitted they were taking it in the wrong direction, I feel good about where they're going with it now.

This is a good 11-min Noclip interview with Nightdive's ceo and it delves into the development problems they had with this:

Updated OP with followin info, would change thread title if I could

Huh I thought this was canceled

Will give the demo a go hopefully my 1660ti is enough to play.
Nah, that was System Shock 3 I believe. But then again, I don't know if they ever really came out and said it was canceled?...

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Looks great! All the colors ans the funky music might be missing, but I think the new atmosphere is more fitting for it's design.

I never got to try the first one, looked to outdated to my tastes, but I'll gladly try this one out as soon as I can.

Have you people tried the last demo? How is it?

looks awesome, and is this running on UE4?
Yep they switched from Unity to UE4 and so they had to restart development.

Is Chris Avellone still working on this?
Funny, I was just looking into this yesterday. He was the lead narrative designer on it but hasn't worked on it since 2017. I'm not sure exactly the circumstances surrounding his departure but it was well before the news this summer. They've never made a statement about whether his writing is still in the game or if it was part of the stuff that was scrapped along with the code/art/level design after changing directions.

Not even a release date? Too early to get excited then. Assuming it's still a way off.
Some dude said earlier in this thread that they are aiming for this Summer.
