500GB PS4 May No Longer Fit Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone

From the CoD blog:

Those who own a standard PlayStation 4 with a default hard drive of 500 GB may need to make room if they have the full versions of Modern Warfare®/Warzone and Black Ops Cold War with all modes and packs installed.

Should you have both games installed and have kept up to date with updates, you may need to delete some unused Game Content to have a successful download and install of the Warzone patch.

Here’s how you can do that in both games:

· Black Ops Cold War: At the main menu, press R3 to go to “File Management.” You will then be able to delete any content you may not have played in a while. The exact content to choose can be found in the Storage Management article linked below.

· Modern Warfare/Warzone: At the main menu, press Options, select the “General” tab, then scroll down to “Game Installs.” From here, you can delete any content you have not played in a while.

No matter which platform you play on, remember that the Warzone download is not necessary if you are only playing Black Ops Cold War and vice versa. Furthermore, players can choose to uninstall/remove other data packs if they are no longer needed for a smaller overall file size.

It wouldn't be an issue if Sony stopped with the "copying" bullshit because with it, you'll always need enough space to both download the update and recopy the whole game afterwards which is ridiculous, not to mention painstaking slow when you're copying 100GB+ onto the same drive you're reading from. I can't believe that shit is still a thing on the PS5 too.

The bigger problem is the size of these games. There is ZERO reason why modern warfare should be over 200gb.

I cant imagine this news making other game companies happy. Having one single (and popular) game could deter some users from uninstalling and dealing with that mess just to buy and play other games. They simply wont bother.

Wow - I wasnt aware that copy process was STILL around for the PS5.
I still have nightmares of trying to fit stuff on a PS3 with that system. Since you essentially needed double the space of every game - you basically had to reverse engineer your installs from max size to smallest to get it to fit. This was especially insane when you got to installing Gran Turismo 5 or 6 and its million separate content installs.

I've read that apparently a big reason for the inflated size is due to all the customization stuff, even if you don't use anime gun with pink bullets, you still have to download it so when someone else uses it it will show up on your game.

Duplication of assets to accelerate loading, that's why install sizes are smaller on the PS5, no need to duplicate because the SSD is fast and the compression tech is much better too. I don't mind the increased size to boost load times, I had 6TB of space on my PS4 Pro, I care more about the time it takes to recopy that 200GB which can be like 40+ minutes and it sucks when you only have like an hour or less to get some game time in.

The copying process is gone for ps5 games. Warzone is a ps4 title so it does the copying on the ps5 still

Of all the technical limitations I was expecting the base Ps4 to start running into, not having enough storage space for a single COD title definitely wasn't one of them.

Except that's bullshit. The real reason these games installs are so huge is because of all the cosmetics. If the duplication explaination was the reason then the game would've been huge from the get go...but it wasn't, it was only like 80GB. It has ballooned to this size because, as another poster pointed out, you need the cosmetics installed so that Activision can show you them when someone else uses them and try to sell you on buying some.

The cosmetics are assets and textures that are also duplicated. And when I say duplicated, I don't just mean twice, it can be over 100 times sometimes.

Then I'm going to ask you to prove it. That argument has always seemed incredibly fishy to me. Why? If you always need something loaded just load it into memory once from a common archive and forget about it, don't stuff it into every single map archive. It's not economical from a storage management viewpoint...and it's a waste of loading time too! Just having it loaded at the start means a long loading time when you first run the game but map loading will take significantly less time since you won't have to keep loading the same assets over and over and over because they're already in memory.

Edit: There is more to it than just cosmetics...but it's not duplication. As drive sizes got larger studios started taking it as carte blanche to store textures and audio uncompressed, which allows them to run on slightly lowe end machines, because at the very bottom end CPUs can struggle with decompressing such things on the fly.

PS4 only has 8GB of RAM, that's total for both system and graphics and i think on base PS4 games are only allowed to use 5GB and that's not just for graphics but sound as well. The system constantly loads and unloads things into memory to stay under that limit.

Like I said, prove it. Go through Modern Warfare's archives and count how many times assets are duplicated. Also...yeah it constantly loads and unloads stuff...but if there is stuff you always need loaded (like gun models) then it makes 0 sense to unload them.

Activision is smart. They know lots of gamers love COD. SO the more storage space it takes, the fewer competing games you'll have on your HDD/SSD.

Therefore, you'll just end up playing COD more and spending more $ on mtx.

It's basically a crowding out strategy. Now if COD was a shit game and hardly anyone played it, that game would magically be 30 gb tops.

Just imagine what it would do with a Series S or the PS5 where one you have to spend $200 on a damn memory card while another Sony has not activated SSD on the PS5 just yet.
