We have discovered just how much Sony has been forking out on publishing agreements and exclusive partnerships for PlayStation, thanks to the newest quarterly securities report for the company.

Certain subsidiaries in the Game & Network Services (“G&NS”) segment have entered into long-term contracts for the
development, distribution and publishing of game software. These contracts cover various periods mainly within seven years. As of December 31, 2020, these subsidiaries were committed to make payments of 34,360 million yen under such contracts.

To clarify things, this means that in the current fiscal year, from April 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, Sony has committed to spending $329 million on publishing agreements and partnerships for PlayStation, which will be paid out over seven years. This is laying the groundwork for future partnerships and games down the line from other developers and existing developers within the PlayStation Studios ecosystem.

This only covers PS5 exclusives developed by teams that aren’t owned by Sony, such as Returnal, Demon’s Souls, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Sony-owned studios, such as Insomniac and Naughty Dog don’t contribute towards this number, which is the same for third-party exclusives such as Final Fantasy 16, Project Athia, and Deathloop.

Pffff... I don't know what is that even supposed to mean.

Is this just paying the bills of titles currently (or formerly) in development such as Demon's Souls, Returnal, Sackboy, Destruction AllStars, Arrowhead's new game, Death Stranding's new version, etc? Or does it mean that they just locked new partnerships for more exclusives since April and that the combined budget appointed to the development of said titles equals $329M?

Fuck these vague-ass financial statements.

Does this include the $250m spent on Epic and however many millions that were spent on Kadokawa?

It has nothing to do with timed exclusives.

These are first party games developed by external developers

This is not what this is about.

This money is for PlayStation exclusives developed by non-Sony studios, like Returnal (Housemarque), Sackboy (Sumo), Bloodborne (From Software), Until Dawn (Supermassive)... that kind of thing.
Fair enough. I'd still like to see them investing in some of their actual first-party studios, though.

Riiight. However you try to spin it, it's still a comparison that makes no sense.
So your feeble little mind doesn't understand sarcasm. Tough shit.

But since you poked me, I'll explain: 329 Million IS NOT WORTH MORE than 7.5 Billion OF COURSE THAT'S SARCASM.

It was just a jab at the quality of games and deals made with 329 Million opposed to the bullshit Bethesda Studios have been putting out in the past YEARS. Not only they release unfinished, unpolished and broken games, they up their game trying to fuck over people even more with all the collectors editions an shady business practices. Hope that made sense numb nuts.

Wolfenstein, Doom, Prey, Dishonored, Evil Within, on top of Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Starfield?

I'll take that 'bullshit' all fucking day long.

They do.

US - Has a brand new studio in San Diego
Europe - Has made a second team for Guerrilla so they can focus on Horizon and a shooter at the same time. (their prior passion)
Japan - Has recently signed on for a partnership with Kadokawa
Santa Monica got 2 teams now. Sucker Punch grew and is set to grow significantly etc etc...

Keep em AAA blockbusters coming. If they're spaced out properly and bring the quality, PS nation will reward it.

Let's hope that a bit more variety will be introduced in Sony's line up with those studios.

The Japan thing is more about Sony getting into the anime and manga business, though. I don't think this will amount to "AAA" manga or anime games by Sony.

I don't know much about how money gets moved around within big platform holders....but given the billions PlayStation has been making in recent years....this doesn't even really seem like a huge amount to me.Still, they are investing in new games...that's all that matters to me.

Settle down. Your original post wasn't hard to interpret.

That doesn't change the fact that your comparison made no sense.

Here We Go Eye Roll GIF

That didn't take long lol.

OT: 329 million isn't not really that bad to be fair. And so far we have yet to see the quality of a third party exclusive suffer.

Could have been invested into first-party instead, like Japan Studio.

Bullshit strategy to moneyhat temporary exclusives, imho.
PS Studio games means games like Demons soul's, Returnal or Sackboy. They are permanent exclusives but the developer is free to sign contracts with other publishers for other games. I would love for them to invest more into Japan Studio though.

They have almost $45Bi in cash to do whatever they want. I expect way more.

It’s more like $18B. The rest of cash on hand are primarily marketable securities tied up in their Financial Services segment which face legal restrictions that limit transfers of funds into other Sony segments. With that said, the OP amount is a drop in the bucket.
