Xbox Game Pass Is The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Gaming

Now that you can't even go to the cinema, for sure.
My point is that movies produced by Netflix are usually cheap and mediocre because the profit they can earn through a subscription service doesn't allow something more ambitious. In my opinion, I used Gamepass in PC for a year, a Gamepass type service would imply a similar level of quality for games as Netflix does for movies. It's a service based in quantity, not in quality.

The Gamepass model is EXACTLY like the Netflix model.

Oceans and oceans of junk, with a few jewels bobbing on the surface to give the illusion of quality.

Perfect for people who have been conditioned to believe that renting an ocean of garbage just because of 'how much you get' is better than buying - and owning - a single bar of gold.

What's the best thing to ever happen to gaming then?

You can't have one single ""best thing to ever happen to gaming"", it's always a combination of factors, and it depends also from the generation, and from what you really want from the game experience. Basicly it is subjective.

Yeah, it keeps me busy at least with the things that I do actually like , it literally makes time valuable unlike anything I've seen , it's on a level of its own , nothings like it.

Imagine if you could have played "every single one of those games" while spending only 45 bucks (let's say for 3 months) instead of the 100 times more that it has taken you to buy all those 100 games (as you claim) at the retail price of (for simplification purposes) 40 buck a game. You would have spent 100 times less and obtained the same value minus just the game boxes in your attic. So that's what the article is talking about.
And to say it doesn't bring anything new to you when every future 1st party release is coming out for it and an unknown number of 3rd parties, makes me want to ask you if you can see the future.
That's the thing, though. It didn't come out in 2001. I cant deny it being a good service for some, but they built this model to milk customers. I'm sure there will be lots of people paying for this service even when not playing anything for a month or two and overall it probably means more money for Microsoft over time. I will never support subscription services for the simple fact that when you stop paying you stop having access. You never own anything, only rent. I'd prefer to pay and have the option to sell or trade or give to a friend to try, etc. A purchase is worth much more when you own the product.

The last time it was counted there were 170 games with 80+ metacritic score, that’s 45% of total games. Quite a lot of bobbing jewels.

That type of money usually will go into gamestop pocket , xbox team really did a great job to counter these bad practices.

The best thing that happened to gaming is Sony 1st party I'd say. So many games of the year and 85+ meta games in recent years.

Gamepass is still a nice cheap option for casuals or people who don't have the money to play those games. But I doubt they'll ever reach the same quality level.

Gamepass has the quantity but mostly not the top quality.

Got you. I rarely go back to a game I’ve completed so it kinda works for me. Also we get a discounted price if we buy the game to keep.

Most of them you only need to experience once ,that's why I save them for the last .

Yeah I'm a very patient gamer as well. I mostly play on PC and I think I've only paid more than $20 once in years.

What "bad practices" are you referring to? The consumer having the ability to sell/trade/give their product to someone else? Or just the markup gametop has with selling trade-ins? Either way the freedom to do what you want with a product after purchase is what Microsoft wants to eliminate.

Sure you can: the best thing to ever happen to gaming is Hidetaka Miyazaki.

My bad , I meant reselling used games like the famous 80$ gears bundle that was sold for 4 bucks ,that's pretty common back then ,you can replicate the experience with gamepass.

The majority of which are old.

Stop trying to make the utterly ridiculous and demonstrably false argument that, right now, there are 170 game which have all rated highly and are all from a 12 month window. It's bullshit. The majority of the library consists of ancient games from the catalog.

Keep renting your games and pissing your money away if that's what you want to do. Misrepresenting the Gamepass library though - that's just sad.

Sony's first party is 'cinematic' junk for children who are easily impressed by B movie plots and 'press X to continue'. Listening to you clowns act as though it's the second coming of Christ is just hilarious.

GamePass definitely is the type of service to open up gamers to a new way of experiencing games the same way Netflix has done for TV.
In no way is this a bad thing so It can only be good for everyone. The rapid adoption rate should push Sony and Nintendo to at the very least consider rival services.
This is why competition is so good. It drives down prices and creates services to draw consumers to your platform. We as the gamers win in the end.

The fuck is wrong with you guys. GamePass is good.

MS has been very successful at turning Xbox fans into Gamepass fans. At the least the loud fans... there would be no need to price hike Xbox Live Gold to double if it was as successful as they would've liked with the more casual crop. From a dedicated console box fan, to an app fan - interesting process to witness. When, and if the box is cut, I wonder how some people will deal with it. I still remember the Sega fans who refused to migrate elsewhere when the Dreamcast went kaput. Props to MS, it's business after all - and that's why you have marketing depts with marketing budgets. You have to work the mind of the consumer to get what you want out of them.

Article is clickbaity obviously. Gamefly would like to have a word, as does PS Now.

It's cool for all those gamers that never played those games, but I've played every single one of those (and some a whole lot). Game pass doesn't bring anything new to the table for me and I'm sure many others. It's just another subscription service.

Weird, these games are all new things new to the table (they were never out prior to Gamepass or are guaranteed to be on GP day one) -
  • All new Bethesda games
  • All Microsoft first part games e.g. Halo Infinite
  • Gears 5
  • Ori 2
  • MS Flight
  • xCloud is part of GP Ultimate as well.
  • There's the split of EA Play included for console vs PC too.
You get the idea. The statement there is nothing new to the table isn't correct today for Gamepass and remains incorrect into the immediate future of game releases too.

Keep moving the goalposts, we went from they're all bad to they're all old. But again, 75% of the games are from the Xbox One generation or more recent according to the same source.

There aren't even 170 games over 80 MC being released in a year, so your impossible target can't be accomplished, nothing to do with GP.

But thanks for the advice, I will keep using Gamepass and enjoy it!

It being a "good deal" is a fallacy. To keep your access to games you have to keep paying every months even when there's no new games that interest you. And as soon as you stop the sub, you're left with nothing for the money you invested in.

I don't like to pay rent. I'd rather just buy on sale the few games I want. 120€ per year can get you a lot of good games on PC.

It's certainly been an amazing service. Hell, there's too many good games on there to play usually. I feel like I don't even bother with 90% of it and still get my moneys worth.

I think Game Pass is a great value, but the best thing to ever happen to gaming? Fuck off.
Game Pass is pretty fucking cool, and I think if the Xbox has any "killer app" then it's game pass but it's not as great as some people make it out to be and it's value depends almost entirely on people's taste.

For me it's great for first party games that I will play once and never really touch again (Gears, etc.).

I really wonder how people will respond to Game Pass once they raise the price which they will at some point. To think that Game Pass Ultimate will be $15 forever is idiotic especially if they continue to add services like they did with EA Access as Microsoft is bound to be losing money which is great for consumers but not sustainable. Do I want it to happen? No, but I think it will.

Nah I have not used my Series X much since I got it. These games don't interest me, I have already played them. It may be a good value to someone who is new to gaming though.

you know you can re-sub, right? if there aren't any games that interest you, unsub. If there are games later that interest you, resub. I don't quite get your point of losing access to your games if you stop paying, because in the same sentence you say there may be no games that interest you. So which is it? Do the games still interest you? Keep the sub. Finally, regarding invested money, these are not appreciating assets, the only value you'll ever get out of them is your own personal enjoyment of the experience. Anyway, I guess I disagree with you on the value proposition.

It is a damn good service. The best thing that ever happened to gaming?

It is always fun to be excited about a nice bargain, but it is time to pump the brakes on the game pass hyperbole.

If you like to rent games then this is a good option.

Don't know if it's the best thing ever, but it has really changed the way I play and consume games in general. It made me discover new games and genres I wouldn't buy otherwise, and I generally play one or two games out of it to completion every month, so it's worth it.

I think it's impossible to watch Netflix programs faster than they produce it, especially now that they buy stuff from TV / old catalogs / other networks.

Yeah if you work out the math, you're getting your money's worth if you play one or two per month (depending on how much it would cost to buy it outright of course) and the thing about new stuff you wouldn't otherwise buy and play? 100000% agree. I've watched so many awesome movies and TV shows that I would never dream of buying/renting individually.

Gamepass has been a great addition to gaming services in relation to competition.

As far as a stand alone service, I'm much more critical. It has its shortcomings with price(in certain countries) vs the quality of the game list and rotation which is all subjective.

Before I say this, I understand its not the same service and some would say not comparable which I disagree... But out of the say 3 years Gamepass subscription vs 3 years of PS+. I've amounted a much better quality library through PS+ than Gamepass and they are there with my subscription forever! No in and out rotation.

Not only that, but Gamepass over 3 years costed me $574.20 AUD vs PS+ 3 year subscription $179.85 AUD.

Also, I don't need to hear how Xbox Live is the more comparable service to PS+, I'm well aware.

That's my take.. Don't get salty!

They're old, crap games. You may like them, but that doesn't change the majority of the library.

No advice here, bud. I couldn't give a fuck what you do. The contention that Gamepass is 'the best thing that ever happened to gaming' is laughable. Sorry.

what? how do you get ps+ at that pricing.
gpu is all about the bargain prices that works across console, pc and soon mobiles. but that ps+ deal you got trumps gpu. but of cos, there are still ways to get gpu much cheaper

Maxwell Jacob Friedman

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.
yeah.... have to disagree with that. It's a good service for those who enjoy it, but in no way is it revolutionary, nor does it change gaming as a whole or anything similar. it's just a glorified rental system.
That and a system i believe hurts gamers in this sense: when games were bad, performed poorly and just weren't good people some with their wallets, if the game didn't sell then the developer needs to take a hard look at what to do better and fix the problem next time around.

gamepass allowed this issue to be voided because if they are on gamepass and have a shitty game they still get paid by MS and make a good chunk of their money back to broken even where then they may not fix their mediocrity. Bad games will get rewarded now.

I don’t know why people bring this up like it’s a big deal, the only time I’ve used the 20% discount was to get Ninja Gaiden 2 before it leaves Game Pass because as far as I can tell it’s NEVER been on sale digitally, otherwise there’s no point not waiting for a sale that isn’t the GP discount since everything (even MS first party titles) regularly see discounts greater than that

its something thoughtful in case you cant finish a game before rotation happens.

iirc 6 months before a third party game is rotated.

and besides, gpu needs to make money for MS. so this solution seems a win all for all.
