Xbox development boss teases "exciting" platform updates: "This is just the beginning", currently updating quick resume, broadcasting and more

Xbox’s platform development boss has teased “exciting” new features coming to Series X and S, stating that what’s been released so far for the console is “just the beginning.”

Speaking on the latest official Xbox podcast, director of program management Jason Ronald said that these new platform announcements would be made as early as “over the coming months.”

Director of programming Larry Hryb added that “there’s a lot coming… we can’t really say too much” and teased that, “I think that we’re going to have [Jason Ronald back] on sooner rather than later.”

Ronald said: “As a team, we’re just really excited by this initial response from fans all around the world. At launch, we say it all the time internally, this is really just the beginning. We’ve got a lot of really exciting things that are coming down the pipeline over the coming months and over the coming years.

He added: “We’re also partnering really closely with key game developers from all across the industry to really take full advantage of all the next-gen capabilities that we put in the Xbox Series S and Series X.

“We really are excited as we get further into the year and closer to this holiday to start sharing more of the details about what’s in development, and how you can really take advantage of these next gen platforms.”

The platform development boss said his team had taken an extended break following the launch of Xbox Series X and S last November, and that he saw it as an opportunity to “lean back and just listen to the community and listen how people are using the consoles, what they’re excited about, areas that we can improve.”

“Now that the team is back, we’re starting to release a series of updates,” he said.

“One area that we really focused on was at launch, we had to disable quick resume, on some titles in the launch window,” he explained. “The team’s been working really hard to be able to re-enable those titles so that people are getting that great, quick resume experience on all the titles that people are playing.

“In other areas like we’ve seen reports of things like controller disconnects as an example. That’s another area that the team’s really been investing in to make sure that you’re just getting that best in-class experience on the Xbox Series X and Series S.”

Ronald went on to reveal that some areas the Xbox platform team were focusing on were missing features on the Xbox app, and giving Series X and S users more control over Quick Resume.

“So over the coming months, we’re going to be updating the Xbox mobile app to add things like Achievements. And then other areas that we’re really focused on. As we think about the console experiences, we’ve listened to the feedback about improvements of broadcasting as an example,” he said.

“Another thing is the sharing experience and the quality of things like game DVR. And then I mentioned earlier about enabling quick resume for even more titles since launch. We’ve also seen the feedback about people want more understanding of how quick resume works and more control over the experience.

“These are all areas that are really high priorities for us, as we’re looking at future updates over the coming months and you’ll be able to start seeing some of these experiences in the Insider rings really soon.”

How could they launch a second console in a row with controller disconnects? I haven't had it on Series X, but I had it one my launch Xbox One, and they only thing that fixed it was upgrading to a One S. Couldn't they have troubleshot this sometime in the last seven years?

Just had my first one today. Wasnt while I was playing, but went to turn system on with controller and it wasnt synced. Couldnt believe it

Curious to see how Quick Resume evolves. Will it be more focused on being able to store more games in QR state, or speeding up the QR process even more (or both)?

You can have all the updates you want, make good games.

How about some games?

Less pandering, more games. Most powerful console can't even display 4k hdr ui.

I like how they say “this is just the beginning” when I feel like they have zero going on. Have they even really started? They need content, content, content. Come on, guys.

What sad bunch of trolls, bet you couldn't wait to shit post all day and this is what you come up with? Low energy

OT: quick resume has been amazing, really curious how they'll improve upon it.

How about some games, as it seems that xbox sx is not doing aswelll the xbox one even, i know they are selling out, but just about, in the eu it takes days for new stock to sell out, they are tracking to about xbox one numbers, and that's not good enough

Seriously. It's always the same people, too. It's literally impossible to have an honest discussion about Xbox on here right now. Unbelievable. The "2021 and beyond" thread was an embarrassment too.

I don't even own a fucking Xbox and I'm tired of the shit. Especially when any and every low effort Sony Shitpost is guaranteed to get 12 reactions at last.

MS seriously needs to team up with oculus and make it compatible. The Xbox is more than enough to run VR games

This would be great. I hope MS makes it happen.

They don't call it "sonygaf" for nothing. These are all repeat offenders and not a ban in sight yet.

This is why I have chosen to post less and less here.

It's fucking embarrassing to go into any thread and read the same shit.

The more it goes unchecked the more rampant it gets.

It’s impossible to talk anything related to Xbox at Neogaf. It’s just a bitter experience. It doesn’t matter the year, it never changes.
I've been told by mods repeatedly its my bias that makes me see it that way.

There is not an actual problem.

I wish I could pull up the actual quote, but it started with "I get that it's hard to be an Xbox fan nowadays"

I hope Xbox continues to push in the right direction, because competition is genuinely good for everyone in the industry. Halo needs to be a 10/10 game to revivify the franchise, and if that goes down well and the big acquisition studios start releasing 9/10 games, they’ll be a serious force to be reckoned with.

Games like “The Medium” aren’t going to cut it.

If it wasn't for Xbox PS people wouldn't even know they wanted XMB in game or cross game chat.

Look how long it took Sony to implement those 2 easy features. They never would have come if not for Xbox.

The Medium was great! But yeah they need to hit it out of the park going forward.

As for the OP article, it annoys me that we’re just going out of the holidays and they’re already hyping up the next holiday but can’t talk about it. How about saying something to the current Series owners so we feel like it was a good idea to jump in now? I’m tired of waiting for stuff.

There is a keynote conference coming next week. It might be nothing, it might be something good.

Really at this time there isn't much "current gen only to talk about" both of these consoles are selling out with literally next to nothing.

Cool I’ll check that out, I just hope the exciting updates don’t remove retail RetroArch, anything else is always welcome.

They're a failed platform. Always the same lies. They never deliver.

The OG xbox is the only platform they ever had with exclusives worth the purchase price of the unit. In fact - it was excellent
The OG xbox was only great as an emulator machine. Still use it to this to day and have thousands of classics on it.

The 360 however was the best console era for MS ironically because of its exclusives. Since then...MS have failed to sustain that quality. What do we have now? Forza? Gears? Halo? Where's the new shit?

Enjoy it while you can.

In a year or so their massive line up of studios will start pushing out their new games, and people like you will sit there eating your crow.

It's not like Sony has much more to offer.

Another MS thread chock-full of Sony fans having a pop. Do you guys have nothing better to do? Serious question. Do Sony ever release videos like this for their fans, or do they just have to sit and patiently wait for yet another platform stability update?

Extended Quick Resume functionality sounds great - that feature has been such an unexpected bonus. The ability to select/unselect a game you want in it permanently would be fantastic.

I really wish they would clean up the entire UI. I HATE the cluster fck dashboard that looks is full of ads and garbage. They need to go simple. Showcase the games in a poster like library on the front page. They need to clean up game pass ,there's too many clickies .

I absolutely agree. I would like to see all my games on the front page, without having to open an app for it.
I still have some audio issues and controller disconnect issues which could be fixed easily I guess. Also give me a rest mode like on PS5 and I'm fine.

I never used quick resume because the Series X is so fast starting games. They should first tackle the little things.

Yeah because the 360 had tons of AAA games and new titles some 2 months after launch didn't it. Take away PGR3 and the 360 launch was pretty dire, very much true for the PS, PS2 and DC launches (please don't list the western launches months latter)

Guys guys I swear 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 will be the year of Xbox exclusives.
Lol they’ve just doubled their amount of 1st party studios, I think it’s fairly safe to assume that things will improve from here on. Only thing that is uncertain is when the floodgates will open and if the games will actually be exclusive. They might go with the first and best on Xbox strategy instead, which will annoy the shit out of everyone without an Xbox but will be awkward to complain about considering how others are doing.

Oh no, Now it's shit posting when someone criticizes features you want on a product I/You purchased / own.
They don't call it "sonygaf" for nothing. These are all repeat offenders and not a ban in sight yet.
You should not go around trying to get users banned just because it does not suit your own personal opinion, everyone has a right to speak their mind, it's a forum not a hive mind.

I own all consoles and will criticize the major platforms has much as I feel to hold them accountable. Sure quick resume is nice for a small group bouncing around games, to me it's not as important as other issues concerning the Xbox platform , Yes a 4k UI is pleasing to have for me because I purchased a product that promoted itself to be able to do so, The list of games promoted years in advance tells me MS should of waited and with that said maybe Sony as well, but, hey, go ahead and try to cancel others opinions because you feel personally attacked over a multi billion dollar company.

I believe the mods have done a good job to allow certain posts and keep some in line. some of the posts you are trying to argue are possibly owners who do want games that use the consoles capabilities. Hell I wish Xbox dropped quick resume and brought back picture and picture like the One had at launch, there is other features and some are tired of the constant CG trailers coming out. Right now the only game thats a showcase e for the new console was a DLC for Gears. Medium was "ok" but that was just a purchased exclusive. I am still milking Valhalla on the xbox series x...

Either way before some of the newly joined users begin to cancel posts because they do not like how it feels maybe consider some of us are upset at what there is to offer from the product we purchased.

The problem with MS (Xbox) is that they need to stop using hyperbole words, to get peoples attention. That's what they did the whole year before launch but couldn't deliver their promises. They loved poking PS, but in the meantime...Sony is delivering and their line-up for this year is on roll. MS still struggles with games and mostly they are underwhelming.

All of their shows from last years needed to be "epic", yet nothing was close to that.

This is why a lot of people do not believe in Xbox in general when they announce something.
