Control UE File Size | PS5 Version is ~40% Smaller than Xbox Series X's

I think it's just the decompression. As PS5 is faster with data, it can decompress more and still send all the assets within the needed time frame.

Twice as fast, twice as compressed? Interesting. That would certainly be a quick way to go about it, they even manage to preserve parity in loading that way.

So weird though.

No, that's impossible. It doesn't matter how slower the XSX IO is compared to the PS5's, they both have basically zero seek time and that's what duplicates are for.

The reason is probably that the XSX version has higher quality assets than the PS4 Pro version. As for why the PS5 is so small... Cerny magic? :messenger_confused:
it does not have higher quality assets lol its the same game on both. same res etc

The PS5 version is probably using Kraken+Oodle Texture to achieve that. Oodle Texture is also available for the XSX, but the devs would have to pay the licensing fee, but for PS5 it's free.

The free alternative for XSX would be their custom BCPack, but maybe that's not available yet.

Ps5 version still not up, my dumbass downloaded Ps4 version from Plus wtf

Up here, downloading now. 25gb and cannot be moved to external storage either - that might be because its still downloading though

Maybe they used the PC version as the base and then added in the PS5 storage features and dependencies.

What's most interesting to me is that PS5 only has 825GB SSD because of its high speed (12 lanes). If Sony compromised on the speed, they could easily make it an even 1TB.

Now, if this becomes a trend and a recurring theme (which Sony must believe it would), the PS5 will end up storing more next-gen games than a 1TB drive, while still being 129% faster. That'd be some serious engineering and impressive forecasting!

PS5 games can't be moved to external storage as of now (an update will come later that'll allow this).

That's what I mean - it isnt just the PS4 version, it's got specific requirements to be on the PS5 SSD.

I think that's what we're hoping for (PS5 owners), but like I said Control has tons of duplicate assets so isn't the best use case. If they can squeeze first party games like Demon's Souls into that space then happy days. Though if they could, I suspect they would have done so. Ratchet will be an interesting use case.

Interesting that the Xbox SX version is larger than the size on PS4 Pro.

Control UE PS5 - 25 GB
Control UE PS4 - 39 GB
Control UE XSX - 42 GB

Seems like they had to use more duplicate files for XSX version due to the slower I/O.

What is causing the XSX to have such a large file?

Days Gone maybe.
Was originally 60GB and its down to 38.
Yeah, that was interesting since it reduced on PS4 before PS5 even released so it wasn’t SSD/dupe texture related.

Maybe it was the testbed for Oodle texture compression and this is another subject of it?

Didnt the DF-article mention something along the lines of ”Series X having same I/O stutter found on PCs”?

If its the same size maybe its using the same type of decompression as a PC would, ie decompressing on the CPU? Unified GMK?

Nice to see Cerny's compression solution for PS5 in effect. Helps with the small storage space.

Impressive size for PS5!

Could be compression, could be higher quality assets that are for the PC but not necessarily utilised by the Xbox?

If it is compression, and that kind of delta can be maintained, that’s a big plus for PS5.

Sony new SDK already allowed this on Ps4, back to the first 2013 model in fact.

Some games were updated and improved load times were seen.

Now of course on Ps5 it's much better but it also works on Ps4 & Pro.

I said different assets on XSX and PS4 Pro. If the Pro version runs at a lower resolution anyway (and I'm assuming it does), textures will also be placed in the game files at a lower resolution.

oh I thought you meant XSX vs PS5 never mind. Yeah but how does XSX compare to XOneX? Both are 1440p I think.

Actually Xbox series x/s does have dedicated hardware compression so you my friend need to take your Sony blinkers off before you embarrass yourself even more.
It's just an hardware decompression block and on CPU already existed something similar. You should at least to be a bit more specific if you can provide something of more, indeed to do vague claim about mystical dedicate hardware part on series X where aren't exactly revolutionary at all indeed to accuse to be Sony fanboy because we said just that.

I presume compression is not used for XSX.
Zlib compression is used on all consoles by default since PS4 / XB1 generation. On PS5 devs can use if they want the more efficient Kraken compression. I think this game could be one of the first multiplat using Kraken on PS5, hence the big size difference.

I don't know what size is this version exactly across all platform. From my understanding, they are all in the general region of 40-ish GB except from PS5. So I don't know what is going on exactly in each version, but if it's not much of a difference it could be down to slightly different way to code some portions of the game for one system compared to another.

Is it actually confirmed though that only the PS5 version is 25GB? I've seen a couple of sites saying the XSX version is too, but I can't track down a definitive source. All I know for sure is that it's still 42GB on PC.

I can confirm that the XSX UE version is 42.4 GB. Xbox One UE version is 42.1 GB.

pc version. unoptimized for file sizing

for the good and bad, this is the direction MS is heading with games development on Gamepass multi platforms. not a new discovery but a good reminder of things

I don't think so, maybe down to lack of direct storage on the pc for now. Hopefully all platforms will benefit soon so developers can really take advantage.

Lol this is comedy gold, they've just used the PC version for Series X surely you can see that?
No, you can't see that. What evidence do you have to support that claim -- other than your gut feeling?

On the other hand, PS5's decompressor tech is nearly 400% more powerful than XSX, which is a documented fact. And Control literally has decompressed more assets in the PS5 version.

Direct Storage is a part of the DX12u API. Both PCs and Xbox have access to that.

Do we still need to install the games on PS5 or is this really the final game size? I haven't t checked that.

If final, then it is very good. Lower bandwidth, faster downloads and less storage needed for ps5 games
