More Hitman Is Coming - IO Interactive Is "already looking to the future"

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

We spoke to executive producer Forest Swartout Large earlier today and asked if Hitman 3's ending left the door open for the studio to return to the slaphead stalker.

"We’re continuously working on Hitman so we are already looking to the future," Large said.

IO Interactive has multiple teams, one of which is working on a new James Bond game. The studio is doubling its staff to be a multi-project developer. IO already has hopes for turning its Bond series into a trilogy, which will feature an all-new Bond straight from the minds at the developer.

There's also still work to do on Hitman 3 with post-launch patches and the other housekeeping bits. And while IO is still trying to find the shape of it, Hitman 3 will also be getting DLC - just don't expect new levels like the New York bank or the private island.

"We are definitely going to be doing some DLC, but we haven’t defined what that is," Large explained. "I think for now we are not looking at new maps like the bank and the island.

"We’re more looking at using existing locations and reimagining them, twisting them. And this time around, we can use the whole trilogy. We can look back at Hitman 2016 maps, Hitman 2 maps - we have all the locations."

In other words, expect more Escalation contracts and perhaps limited-time hits across your favourite locations from the entire Hitman trilogy, all accessible from within Hitman 3.

Missed opportunity for new maps/season pass I feel. The sales have been amazing, good on them for sticking to artistic integrity though.. but still I want more 😂

Makes sense since it's arguably more popular than ever right now

Still pretty smart of them to frame it as the end so there aren't any expectations for them to keep carrying everything over, if they hadn't I can imagine a Pokémon Sword/Shield style controversy whenever they inevitably decide on a clean break.

Won't be getting hands-on with 3 until it lands on Steam (I can't be fucked with all the EGS BS and activating the previous versions..which I already own). But good to know that it doesn't mark the end of Hitman. Albeit I'm intrigued as to where they might go with Bond (I'm hoping for some Hitman style gameplay coupled with some Alpha Protocol style RPG aspects) I'd be disappointed to see Agent 47 Retired. If anything I'd like to see them maybe revisit some of the older titles and realise/reimagine them using their new engine tech.

Its probably a good choice, the progression carry over stuff was a hassle for me (might be better now) and it doesn't even work properly - no transfer of mission story completion progress or escalations and I already didnt like most of the H2 escalations, I didnt like how they had differences in the map, I liked that I had mastered the map and now had extra challenges, especially with Paris and Sapienza, so I'm reluctant to do them all again - plus there are some weird bugs with main mission stories and other inconsistencies that would really confuse more casual/first time players.

I really hope they get the VO for Agent 47, David Bateson another gig while the Hitman game series is on the backburner. Like an animated/CGI TV series or something mad like that because I really like that man and he deserves work:

This is an amazing interview, just because he lets DB talk for ages.

I feel Hitman 3, without all the old levels, is pretty content bare, especially when the deluxe edition with no additional maps cost the same as the Gold edition of 2 which gave you two adfitional dlc maps.

I mean it basically only has 5 real levels, none of which I thought were this trilogy of hitmans best sadly.

I agree so far, I'm on level 2 and I'm really burning through the content. I think its combination of what you said and that I've played too much Hitman in general over the last 4 years so I kinda know what to do even though its new content.

TBH though this is a good thing, I kinda want to be done with it for a couple years at least since I've put over 1200 hours into H1&2. Not great for new buyers, but tbh I think new people will take as long as we took to complete Paris or Sapienza in totality, or at least I speak for myself sorry, I spent 40+ hours on each level of Hitman 1 and that wasn't like me doing all that in a week and then waiting a month or two for the next level to come out. I generally was just finishing the months content when the new stuff came out, it was amazing for me, felt like Diablo 3 again where I played and read about the game every day and really got into it. I got so much value out of the first and 2nd games.

It's a shame they're not planning new levels for Hitman 3, but I'm glad they're not abandoning the IP in favor of 007. Maybe we'll at least get some bonus missions like Landslide?

Kinda wish that hanging building shown in one of the cutscenes for Hitman 2 was the final mission. Looked like an interesting place compared to the Train mission.

I have just begun playing 3 and I'm glad to know IO's design philosophy is moving forward and it's profitable.

No one is making games like they are.

They better at least give us a Dartmoor variant. Change to nighttime with rainy storm, and it’s a great homage to Hitman: Contracts.
