The PS5 is making me hate PC Gaming (techradar article)

PS4 Pro made me dump PC gaming as a whole. The benefits are waning, the barrier for entry is way too high and certain components are just insane to me how even with inflation they could justify the cost.

Entry level cards are 400 dollars now, that bought me a GTX 580 8 years ago! Now you’re telling me that same price gets me a PS5? No thanks, 400 dollars got me an entire system vs just a single component. I’m not knocking pc gaming. I still say that many positive aspects of it can only be had with a PC (like fixing cyberpunk) and in an all digital or mostly digital future it’s the best way to ensure long term preservation of your content but I’d rather stick to my city builders and strategy games that can be play just fine on my M1 MacBook and keep a console because it’s clear that it’s boutique at this point.

I just got both... PC gaming is always king (except for those dark dark early PS3/360 generation days).

PC hassle and cost made me give up on it. sure the high end is better than consoles but not enough.

PS4 Pro is probably a reason. usually I shift back to PC after the 1st few years of a console cycle. but the Pro refresh made the gap lower. the PS5 CPU and SSD will make the PC advantage even lower.

I've owned both a PS4 and a gaming PC for many years now, but my computers have always won the title of being my favorite gaming hardware, often leaving my PS4 gathering dust for months on end. Knowing I could only afford one, I had a decision to make: do I buy a PS5 now, or save up for a shiny GeForce RTX 3090 and CPU upgrade?

It seemed like an obvious choice at the time. I'm now kicking myself.

Since these GPUs have hit the market we've seen games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Watchdogs: Legion, and The Medium released, giving us the opportunity to test this groundbreaking computing hardware for ourselves. And each time, be it down to overly demanding software or lack of optimization for PC, I'm left disappointed.

Before the games were even released, we were seeing some fairly alarming system requirements to play the latest AAA titles. It was reported this week by DSOG that the Medium couldn't run at a consistent 60fps on a PC equipped with an Intel i9-9900K and an RTX 3080, even on standard 1080p quality and ray tracing switched off. And the optimization issues faced by The Medium are hardly unique.

PC gaming feels like a constant uphill battle to evolve and accommodate the very latest in computing technology, combining a love for tech tinkering with a gaming hobby for many. You need to put consistent effort, money, or both into being a PC gamer because a large reason people might choose a computer over a console is the ability to experience games in the highest achievable quality.

And yet, PS5 owners can now experience 4K quality, better game optimization (in some titles), and haptic feedback in the DualSense controller for significantly less than a comparable gaming computer would cost to buy or build. One of the biggest reasons I (and many others) will also be buying a PS5 is because of the Sony Exclusive titles.

When the PS5 showcase announced Horizon: Forbidden West, Demon's Souls and God of War: Ragnorak, I excitedly noted them as titles to look forward to playing when I could eventually buy the console myself. Now that the first few months of the Nvidia Ampere and AMD 'Big Navi' hardware have passed, I'm left feeling disappointed and envious of my console playing peers.

This is in no way saying that I'll be switching out my gaming PC in favor of a PS5, but I'm firmly stepping down from my high horse for the time being. Until games are better optimized for PC or developers manage their hardware expectations, every game I'm looking forward to in 2021 is currently a PS5-exclusive.
as ecosystem i put ps5 in third place right now ..so.....no

Entry level cards are $400?! What?

An RTX 3060ti is $399 MSRP (yeah, I know you can't easily get them). It's better than a 2080 Super, which came out for $699 in July of 2019.

Yup I came to this realization as well last year. I was trying to secure a 3080 for my PC and a PS5 at the same time but I was only able to get a PS5 and strangely enough I’m very satisfied with my PS5 for now. Obviously, I’m still going to get the 3080 once I get the chance but my PS5 is looking really good with the exclusives about to hit it soon and I’ve been having a blast with Spiderman and all the other Enhanced PS4 exclusives out for it right now.

I got my PS5 DE for $399 and I honestly feel like I robbed Sony. The performance per dollar I’m getting out of it is just unreal and I know it’s impossible to get a PC with performance this good for the same price. I’m sure the PC situation will get better with time especially once this pandemic is over but we are definitely getting robbed right now in the PC space. It doesn’t help that the big game that was supposed to melt out GPUs during the holiday ended up being one of the biggest disappointments ever (I’m looking at you Cyberpunk 😡).

Anyway I’ll always be a PC and console gamer because both sides have their merits. I like to mod my games and PC is the only open platform that lets me do so with ease. I also like the simplicity and convenience of console gaming so I’ll always own a console. It’s all a matter of preference and both platforms are great for gaming in my opinion.

The fact that I can optimize and break so much shit is what makes PCs interesting.

A close system like a console does have its merits, and it's always the prettiest early on in its lifecycle.

At least not yet, I hear it's coming to PS5 later on.

Cool. It'll be 1440p-ish (checkerboard reconstruction up to 4K) and 30 FPS with a mix of medium/high settings and drastically reduced ray tracing (or none at all). Yay.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
For me it was kinda backwards. I played a lot of PC games as a kid but, when I got my first job, I bought a PS4.

It is a nice console and I had a lot of fun, but shitty frame rates, lowered resolutions and paid online made me miss PC gaming.

Of course I'm not saying that every game is unplayable in consoles, most of them play nice, but having the option to play games perfectly is enough reason for me to have a gaming PC.

And yeah, for now it seems the new consoles are aiming to 60 frames and high (while still dynamic) resolutions. Whenever they are able to hold that up during all the gen is something I still need to see to believe.

Oh, i see the mythical "console optimization" at play in the article.

Maybe lower your settings if its doesnt run well ? Instead of running 5 times the load that consoles have and then writing articles how "optimized "console games are

Oh good god OP, I thought these were your thoughts. I was going to say, "Damn dude you sound like a gaming journalist". Then I saw the source at the top and breathed a sigh of relief. Scared me, my man.

Not sure why this has to be an either/or thing. My feet are firmly planted in both the PS and PC gaming realms as between those two I have access to the entirety of gaming outside of Nintendo. Right now, I'm a bit enamored with my brand new PS5 and its awesome audio and controller. But also because it is the shiny new thing in the house. My PC isn't going anywhere though. The newness of PS5 will wear off and I'll be back on my PC gaming with an enormous selection of games no console can match.

But if I may say, I think your (the article's author, that is) first mistake was buying a 3090. At that price, buyer's remorse is included at no extra charge.

As someone who has been spending the last couple of months buying parts for several new PC builds (including multiple 30 series Nvidia GPUs), I totally get the point the author is trying to make. However, it's entirely dependent on your personal situation if consoles or PC is the better option for you. For example, someone who uses Linux will probably not want to skip owning a PS5, because let's be real here getting some games to work on Linux is a nightmare if they do at all. If you're a DOTA2/CSGO/PUBG only type of Gamer, yeah you're not going to find console gaming very enticing.

So-called "AAA gaming" on PC is dead. Well, it's alive if you count Star Citizen. Otherwise, the "AAA"s you get are built with consoles in mind and upscaled to PC. Notice how the modern conversation for PC gaming nowadays -- compared to 20 years ago -- is about how much better the console games run on PC. When I grew up playing PC in the 90s and 00s (I'm outta PC nowadays), we were bragging about games that literally cannot run on consoles and can only run on PC. I think that still exists, to a certain degree, but mostly in the realm of PC VR.

This is because the expensive part of videogame development does NOT come from "maxing out the game". The expensive and time-consuming part is the asset generation. The assets are so incredibly expensive that you cannot afford to only put it on one platform. Otherwise you end up with financial disasters like Bioware's Old Republic MMO. So while devs could take full advantage of PC hardware, they have very little financial incentive to do so. Instead, the PC hardware companies shoulder the burden of brute-forcing for these devs so that the games look much better on PC than on the consoles they were designed for.

I don't have a PS5. I dunno if I'll get one. I have some reservations. With that said, I completely understand the OP's core gripe. it is why I quit PC gaming ~6 years ago.

I understand what you mean. During the Xbox 360/PS3 days, I hated the frequent framerate-dips and overall low resolution of so many games. Because of it, I played lots of games on my PC (GTX780 with i5 3570k).

Since PS4pro (I jumped into the generation when the pro was released) I'm a console-gamer again through and through. Never looked back and PS5 will only distance me even further from current PC gaming.

Now emulation of retro-consoles.. thats a whole different story for me :) (and PC is obviously fabulous in that regard)

You realise not everyone lives in USA? 3060 Ti is going for 550 - 750 € in Europe. A brand new GTX 1660 was 290 € a couple of days ago and it's already sold out.

After I bought for the PC some games I had on the PS4 and saw how superior the PC versions are, I said farewell to console gaming.

And if more Sony exclusives come to PC, I don't have a single reason look over my shoulder.

All fair points. I have a 3080/5800x rig and a PS5 and sometimes I wonder why I upgraded my PC.

I feel like this generation of consoles really is closing the gap between console/PC gaming already and we're only at the start of year 1. I personally can't wait to see the games that come out on next gen consoles in a few years time.

The problem with PC is because it has to scale nothing can be fully optimised. Those GPUs will never be maxed out by any game so you're never seeing what PC should be doing. It should be light years ahead of console but it ain't and basically with each console iteration PC is going to become less and less viable. I mean just alone on the GPU PC should be annihilating everything but if you're a dev you're realising how small your target market really is.

PC is great for brute force, super for online twitch stuff and customisation but at those prices it ain't all that anymore. I mean the whole upgrade cycle is a treadmill and it took console architecture to usher in the long overdue SSD synergy.

Nvidia are laughing their assets off with that RTX treadmill too. I mean take minecraft, this measly looking game still can't run in 4k 60fps with full RTX on any gpu. It ain't nothing to do with power, it's to do with a dated engine that's designed to scale to every PC config it can because it's still all about the £££

Not sure I agree entirely, but it certainly has paused any need I had for an upgrade. Why spend a 1000 euros for a PC overhaul when most stuff is already good enough on a console, many stuff even at 60fps. We'll see next year when prices and availability might make new GPUs a little more appealing.

I see many angry replies. People really like to defend their pc's and master race...
I have 2k usd pc and had 360, ps4(not anymore) and ps5... and I recently play more on consoles and I can focus more on game there.
The ps5 is phenomenal with it's dualsense, 3d audio and almost instant loading times in des and astrobot. And it;s 500usd, You plug and play and have experience like no other (GPU SONG IN ASTROBOT !!!)

I don't see anything wrong in that. Of course pc can do more if You spend 2 grand. (or by the current prices like 3 grand).
I have 3080 and it can absolutely blast ps5 probably but only in theory since games are not made for 3080 alone. des and astrobot amazed me like nothing on pc recently.

I am rather easily distracted, so just putting in a game and playing it without any issues, with added bonus of amazing graphics, stable performance and developer tweaked controls for a specific controller is really nice. You have everything in Your hands and don't need to press some random key for a map or something...
I am a pc gamer since 1997 and I always loved it. But truth is, it was always a money pit and a troubleshooting galore. And the older I am, the more I find mouse a bit uncomfortable.
Of course I also play 4k60 all games on pc ! And some with xbox one controller and I love it. There are not as many issues if You have good hardware... although x570 and zen2 launch fucked me over right for a month with uefi issues, motherboard replacements, long boot, crashes and posting problems.
But now I can play all my games maxed out. All my old games however I want, modded or not. I even have old 1995-1998 comptuers in basement and crt. Replayed some Max Payne, RTCW, Half-Life on it last year (amazing nostalgia!). I love the pc but also kinda hate it's bullshit sometimes.
It also helps that many of my fav games were 360, ps4 and now are ps5 exclusives. Of course later coming to pc for the most part and being better there. I have like 600 games on steam and only maybe 50 exclusives on consoles that are not available on pc. But most of those steam games I play, are also multiplats and are on consoles if I wanted to go console only.

But ps5 or series x right now ? amazing! I do not recommend most of my friends to buy a pc. I always say to get a notebook for web browsing and console for gaming or for kids.

Not necessarily a stupid argument but did she just mention Cyberpunk as a game better optimized on PS5? And the Medium which is not even on PS5?
She didn't say that those games were better optimized for the PS5 (she was using those games to illustrate the types of specs new games are shipping with on PC.)

People often throw in the "optimisation" argument but ignore that the majority of titles run at 30fps on console (except for some last gen games on brand new consoles, of course). bUt sMoOtH 30fps, I hear ye enunciating. It's still 30fps (and as if it's always butterly smooth on console... so many games, even on the PS4 Pro, have noticeable slow downs, despite already running at 30fps) and motion clarity and preserving details in motion is utterly bad.

Consoles has their place and right to exist. Having that kind of performance for that price is actually amazing but if you want more, PC gaming is the only and very good and viable option. Also, many games aren't nearly as bad optimised as people make it out. Sure, if I always crank everything up to "ultra" without questions I could say "this runs poorly, I barely see a difference and get shit fps". Guess what, turn down some settings a notch and you will also barely notice a visual difference but your fps will go up.

I mean, the "psycho" setting in CP2077 kills your fps by what, 20% for like 5% less graining in reflections? Not only that but CP is generally not in a great condition to compare it on and to any platform, giving the state it's on almost any platform.

It's true that Sony has some amazing exclusives and if you wanna play them that's the only option, at least at launch. Then again people tend to ignore some great indie titles on PC only, too. Sure, those usually doesn't hold much in the eye of the majority compared to those big AAA titles, but it's still there and a viable option.

In the end it always boils down to which games to you want to play and what compromises (both in console and also on PC) are you willing to take. There's no perfect solution. There will always be some cons on either side.

The guy I replied to said "dollars" which typically refers to USD unless otherwise specified.

The RTX 3060ti is also €399. I mean, sure, it's hard to find it at that price right now, but PS5s aren't exactly readily available, either.

PC just needs strong exclusives, if CDPR made their game a PC exclusive it would have been better for them.
PC doesnt have important game exclusives so thats why their are not perfectly optimized.

Weaker Graphics for 500€ vs best graphics for 2k+

tenor.gif

Sure, that's always been the proposition with PC gaming and consoles at the start of a generation. With each year that value to dollar (or Euro) gap will close and you'll start looking at probably 800€ ~ 1000€ PC builds easily outperforming PS5/XSX and also being super capable in other ways probably by 2023.

Because graphics are the only thing that matters. I'm still chugging along on a 980Ti until I get a 3000 series card.

Give me a call when I can install any mod I want or even make my own mods on consoles.
