It would be no more of a mess of having to own three console platforms and PC to play everything now, each with their own account long ins (and paid onilne gaming services for each console) etc. It's not like gaming has ever been a unified format like movies/music where you just buy whatever hardware you want to play any DVD/BR/CD etc.
