Microsoft is Looking to Make another Bethesda Size Acquisition

I don't care who own what only how accessible content is to me and in the long run....
And Japanese way of thinking and doing business is not great for that so far.
So the less deal they have to lock and kill content if it stays stuck on one of their platform the better.
We don't even now how MS will handle content here...
We mostly have fanboy of each side assuming the best/worst for them in a dissonant way depending on the subject of the thread to gloat or whine...

If Sony could afford to buy bigger publishers and lock down more expensive IPs for themselves, you think they wouldn’t?
I'm old enough to know the history of both Sony and Microsoft. Sony is as greedy, predictable and conservative as ever. MS has never really changed their M.O. much in over 3 decades.

The fact that Sony have a smaller budget makes them less of a threat to consumers than a company that can buy anything.

Also, keep in mind, even with all that money, MS just recently tried to double XBLG. How do you think that kind of policy would work out in a world where they really are "the only shop in town"?

Pathetic. Use your billions to build your own studios you lazy fucks.

Naughty Dog
Guerilla
Sucker Punch
Media Molecule
Insomniac
Zipper (dead)
Evolution (dead)
Psygnosis (Sony Liverpool) (dead)

All bought out studios. Aside from Gran Turismo, God of War and their annual baseball game, every one of their other heavy hitters came from third party devs they opened the wallet for.

Sony even paid 100s of million of dollars to buy Gaikai and On Live's patents, which collectively helped them do game streaming.

You do what you can afford. Sony can't throw billions around like MS. You're pardoning one practice because it takes more money, timed or not, it sucks for one side. Plus, Streets of Beige just posted how Sony has done the same thing, just because they can't afford something like Bethesda doesn't make them any better.

Naughty Dog, Guerilla, Media Molecule, Zipper, SuckerPunch barely produced a single IP before Sony acquired them. So, they didn't had any history behind it. Insomniac developed games for Sony since they were created.
Evolution studios developed games for Sony since beginning before closure

On the other hand Zenimax has a developers with great history behind it and which games are multiplatform and are developed for many console generations. And guess what, MS bought the whole publisher.

Insomniac already developed games exclusively for Sony for a veeery long time before acquisition . Same crap as Playground Games for Xbox. It's not a big deal. One dev studio is not the same as publisher
That’s funny because they did sunset overdrive for Xbox, so basically there will never be a sequel to that game on Xbox.

Sony does it to but to many people call out Microsoft for doing what Sony does

Sonys last year acquisition has nothing to do with Sunset Overdrive sequel. LOL Game was released 7 years ago
You, Xbox community, can blame only yourself because you didn't buy the game in enough copies to secure the sequel. You, Xbox community, fucked up this game badly for your platform. You didnd't supported the game enough

Sunset Overdrive wasn’t getting a sequel regardless of the acquisition.

I’m not sure why some of you are trying to argue acquiring a single developer that historically worked mostly with PlayStation is the same as acquiring a multiplatform publisher.

Embracer Group?

THQ Nordic
Saber Interactive
Koch Media
DECA Games

Lots of IPs
This would be huge get, this move would destr playstation...well not really but MS would be worthy opponent. Embracer has amazing games.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
I wish Sony would fight back on this shit, they are way to passive letting MS gobble up tons of the industry

they’re the leader ffs, act like one
Sony have won the leadership by being passive, while Microsoft fucking up for themselves.

At least they think of the children regarding new features, so I'm sure soccer moms will always prio Sony over Microsoft.

But seriously, Sony has shown that pro consumerism doesn't matter and the only thing that matters are games, therefore forced Microsoft to change direction.

The false equivalences continue.

You're talking about Insomniac, who spent decades making several games for Sony, and only made that one Xbox exclusive that one time. And you want to make that the same as buying out large third party multiplatform publishers?

Insomniac abandoned Sunset Overdrive because MS, who signed for exclusive publishing rights, never offered to fund and publish a sequel. And why?
Because xbox fans who are now hurting so much about that lost IP, didn't go buy the game when they should have.

Tell us when was the last time Sony "did the same". And on a similar scale, for that matter.

Was about to post exactly this (but add Bend studios to the list as well).

People who are complaining about Microsoft acquiring devs now either have selective memory or are just too young to remember Sony throwing money at most of their best studios based on the developers prior success.

Just buy Asobo and call it a day.

THQ Nordic doesnt make much sense.

If its a major publisher then reignite that SEGA rumor and give us Skies of Arcadia 2.

GTA prints money. Take 2 Interactive would be a great up to own. That fits with the xb brand

I don't get the Sega thing, out of nostalgia for Sonic, they got practically nothing. I like Yakuza, i liked Shemune, but shrugs.

Also I think the Japanese would fight a Sega buyout, seeing as to what happen to Nissan / Carlos CEO guy, afterwards the Corp fought for a more favorable merger where they had more control of themselves.

Though Konami might be a better buy then Sega. They have some desirable IPs, but choose to make pachinko machines with them. Dino Crisis, Slient Hills, Castlevania.

Square Enix, they have some decent stuff. Filler for Games Pass

Ubisoft would be curious. They putout some decent stuff. That would give them diversity for games pass.

ActiVision would be too pricey. It be nice to see blizzard titles, might encourage them to experiment more with releasing titles, like ghost

But that's not the reality we're in.

The reality is MS is most likely right when they say that they are going up against Amazon and Google. Fanboys scoff at that idea that Sony isn't their main competition, but they are most likely warring with them for these publishers. No way of knowing for sure but there are also rumors that Amazon and Google are looking at buying devs. Again, better MS than them. If they are evil for protecting the Xbox brand, cool. No amount of fanboy bitching will change the reality.

We've seen what happens when something becomes a Sony exclusive. My beautiful Bloodborne is stuck at 30 fps with jaggies and bad framepacing. I cri erytiem. Hopefully Bluepoint is hard at work on getting it on PS5. Until then, it's a travesty.

Neither will any amount of sycophantic rationalization.

MS is bigger than either Amazon or Goggle. They can claim to be "protecting us" from those two streaming platforms, but the consequences of what they do are what speaks the loudest. Only MS is seen buying out publishers, not Amazon nor Google.

MS is growing a monopoly. Monopolies always harm consumers and stifle innovation in the long term. That is the end result, and that is the reality.

Justify it any way you like, won't make what's coming to this industry in the end any better or worth it.

Thank god From can make other multiplatform games, and that there's still competition, though. ;)

Hey, maybe MS will share with Sony like some believe, then you won't have to buy an Xbox or play the games on PC. Not sure what's so bad about that anyway. Keeping games off streaming only platforms is worth it to me!

Why is MS is better than the other multi billion dollar corporations? They all care about the same thing, making more money only.

if they are as evil as other...why care if it's ms then ?
you nailed it the problem of some here is more it's not the "right" brand in the end
from my perspective looking at what they do with their content more than the logo itself it's laughable.

It will be Square Enix. With Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts on Microsoft's growing platform, the weebs will jump ship en masse and leave Playstation with only Naughty Dog fans left.

The rise of Xbox is in full swing.

I don’t, I get all platforms so it doesn’t matter to me where the content is.
Stadia and Luna are streaming only. Silly question.
That’s MS’ end goal with GamePass and xCloud as well, after all they want to get to the 2-3 billion gamers and you can’t do that without streaming, if/when physical consoles become and insignificant part of the market they will be gone.

I agree with that first sentence, I also get all platforms. Reference the second part, we are talking about the present. At this time MS is better than the other two. Simple.

If Microsoft keeps on aqcuiring publishers/Studios Sony would stand no chance competing, because Microsoft would just keep on releasing exclusive after exclusive every 1 to 2 months with these game studios.

That's misleading. Sony bought studios but they make new ip from nowwhere. Microsoft 90% bought studios and ip like gears, fallout, doom... even halo was originally a pc release. Ms have bad behaviour with acquisitions and ip management.

No shit they didnt have any history of developing for any other platform.
That doesn't mean Sony didnt make them a first party studio because of the success of Syphon Filter.

You don't just acquire a game developer for no reason, dumb ass. They have to have proven success. Sony jumped on talent when they were successful but still affordable.

They acquired/threw money at Naughty Dog after the success of the Crash franchise.

They acquired/threw money at Guerilla after the success of Killzone.

They acquired/threw money at Sucker punch after the success of Sly Cooper and Infamous.

They acquired/threw money at (the now defunct) Zipper Interactive after the success of Crimson Skies and SOCOM.

They acquired/threw money at (the now defunct) Evolution after the success of the World Rally Championship and Motorstorm.

They have/had history with Insomniac..but they acquired/threw money at them after the wild success of Spiderman.

If you have the money to secure talent, you do it. It's that simple.

Its funny..one of the narratives this last gen was "Microsoft is so stupid for letting Bungle, Ensemble, Lionhead, FASA, Twisted Pixel, PressPlay etc go."
..Now its an outright problem that Microsoft is making an effort to strengthen their first party and right those wrongs.

Guess it ain't too fun when the rabbit has the gun.

Can you please point me to Amazon's and Google's vibrant gaming platforms? I'd like to buy one.

One thing’s for sure, the kicking and screaming, mental gymnastics and basically full blown screeching will make the next few years very entertaining.

I think the threads where Sony makes an acquisition are the absolute pinnacle, as people’s hypocrisy and lack of shame is laid bare for all the world to see.

Having a principle and sticking to it, the absolute impossible task for some.

Personally, I’ll be playing on a PS5, Series S and Switch. Let the good times roll.

When you see people defending Sony buying out Ubisoft or Capcom as if it's better for consumers than Microsoft buying out Bethesda, you can call them hypocrites all you like.

Until then, you're the one doing mental gymnastics to defend a monopoly.

So, MS was damn stupid in last 15 years.
GamePass as every other "ala netflix" services wasn't a thing 15 years ago. that said, yes, ms been too naive initially when they launched the Xbox project until the early months of the Xbox One ms did not ask the studios for IP ownership for their exclusives. Absurd thing that leads them to have to shell out huge sums of money for games that were practically the lifeblood of their console such as halo or gears of war. On the contrary, Sony asked the developers not only the exclusivity but also the ownership of the IP leaving the studios without any future value. Clearly, it was too much naive.
Fortunately, today's Xbox is not what it used to be

Monopoly definition;
the exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.

Microsoft have a monopoly of the market?

You’re either for acquisitions, or against them.

There really is no in between, and no romanticising it. The same principle applies to paying for artificial timed exclusivity.

If you believe there is a distinction, where is the line?

Are Sony and Microsoft only allowed to spend so much on a dev? Are publishers not fair game? If that’s your view, why? Is it ok for Sony to buy devs that they’ve got a good relationship with? If so, Microsoft had an extremely close relationship with Bathesda, what makes that purchase invalid? How have you come to these conclusions?

No Sony buying insomniac to make sure they didn’t make games for other consoles. Keeping any future games exclusive.

Why do Sony fans use the fact they made games in the past for Sony as a defender for buying the studio?
The fact they made a game on Xbox was signs they were open for more u Sony bought them so they couldnt.

Sony has done this practice for years, they either pay to keep the game off another console or they buy the studio to keep them exclusive

also look at Sony fans reaction to this, so you can't say your unhappy when Microsoft does it but gloat when Sony does it

Yeah, MS would be preferable to Google or Amazon but neither choice is great. That's like electing to step on a plug over a drawing pin.

A merger between Playstation and Xbox would actually be awesome but I guess it would never happen. Combining the two would easily create the biggest and possibly best publisher the industry has ever seen, and each could bolster the other's weaknesses.
playstation and ms mergin its a dangerous thing,we need the market splitted, also i dont want to have the four xbox fans on my country dead by heart attack
