No Changes to Xbox Live Gold Pricing, Free-to-Play Games to be Unlocked [Update]

"We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.

Thank you.

Glad the prices won't change sucks they are joining Sony in priority of scummy play to win games over retail. Paying customers get screwed for free loaders.

Glad the backlash forced them to back down
It was unsustainable. Like I posted in the other thread, MS didn't realize how damaging this was to highlight the fact that Xbox charged for free-to-play games when PlayStation didn't. There was no way that could stand now that it was being brought into the light. It's truly amazing how no one at Microsoft saw this trainwreck coming from a mile away.

Did these idiots think people wouldn’t complain about a price hike? They could have raised the price by five cents and people would flip.

Make a decision and stick with it. This backlash was predictable. If you didn’t anticipate it, there are larger issues. If you did anticipate, still went for it, then backed down... Come on.

Might be a case of a higher up over Spencer going “fuck the nerds we need more $$$”. Although I though Spencer reported directly to Nadella now. If he signed off on this then he is breathtakingly retarded.

The problem wasn't that they raised prices. It was that they significantly raised prices for a service that was already racking in a ton of profit. It was straight up price gouging, and seen as supplementing the less profitable Game Pass.

And yes...the fact that they didn't anticipate the backlash points to a much larger issue.

That literally makes no sense. Free to play games bring in a TON of money.
And my 69.99 brings in nothing and should be treated less than someone paying zero or couple a dollars for power ups? My 69.99 should not make me a second class citizen period. You treated both the same or retail games get extras not less.
