RTX 3060 Vs. PS5 and Xbox Series X: How a Midrange PC Will Stack up in 2021

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

The GeForce RTX 3060 gives the latest consoles a run for their money at an affordable price. But is it a more powerful alternative at the same price? Let's take a look.

It's been an interesting few months for video gaming hardware and Nvidia doesn't want that momentum to slow down anytime soon. During CES 2021, Nvidia finally revealed their mid-tier graphics card for the RTX 30 series, the RTX 3060. Nvidia's RTX 3060 is meant to directly target midrange gamers who might still be stuck on their old GTX 1060's, stating that the new 3060's can run game at a steady 1080p, 60 frames per second with Ray Tracing and DLSS on. We compare some of these preliminary stats to the competitively priced next-gen consoles, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. While PS5 and Xbox Series X players can expect to play most games at 4K resolution, some even with ray tracing on and generally only at 30 frames per second, the RTX 3060 looks to give players that generous boost in fps while using Nvidia's DLSS technology for a lower price point.

So PS5 is $400-$500, XSX is $500...

and then this PC is ...

$330-$400 GPU
$200-$300 CPU
$150 motherboard, RAM
$300 case, PSU, CPU cooler, cables, etc (edit- forgot to write SSD in this part)
$50 mouse & keyboard
$100 Windows

Yeah the $1000+ PC is the same price lol ok

And no don't count "I have old parts I can sell or I already have some of those" because that works with consoles as well. I paid less than $180 for my PS4 because I had my PS3 and games to sell off, etc.

Absolutely, although I need PC, might as well game on it as well.
In which case it’s mostly just GPU.

I’m not PCing on console.

Paid multiplayer
Expensive games
Less than 800gb ssd drive
Only limited to single input controller, no built in cross platform peripherals support
Region locks
Can do nothing except gaming and limited streaming through apps often inferior to other platforms

none of that makes it cost any less. Lets not pretend that building gaming PCs are even close to consoles in value.

Streaming apps are superior on other platforms? Like what? You streaming on your PC to your TV?

All I need is a Gpu using same guts for the past 3 yrs, same monitor for the past 3(1440P/144) and same case for almost 20. And my PC i can do pretty much anything, including UW.

Depending on how invested a person is into buying games it may not make the PC cost less, but after the initial investment the console could end up costing more in the long run.

PS+ is currently £50 on PSN and if the console generation is going to be around 7 years then that £450 base price for your console automatically turns into £800.

I'm not saying one costs more than the other because there's a lot of variables, but the console does have an opportunity to cost more in the long run depending on the customer.

But that aside there is no arguing (in my opinion) that the console £450 out of the box experience just simply can't be matched by PC at the moment.

Ya...thats just in the hardware department. Your peripherals, your ps plus crap, i mean shit...you have to pay for mp...thats sad. Closed system, no modding, ya...pc has a higher cost upfront but its still the better platform for everything else, including gaming.

Don't know about that. Console is definitely easy plug and play comfort but PC gives you so much flexibility. Great discounts, mods, graphic settings etc.

Why do I keep hearing about crashes, basic performance for BC and hardware services still not utilized?

Piad less then 80 bucks for my ps4 pro when the PS4 released in pc hardware.

See how that works.

Somebody that upgrades to a 3060 just replaces his gpu and its done. simple as that. its 330 he spends and he can resell his gpu.

Also those pc prices are beyond laughable.

GPU u can make it as expensive as u want. 150 buck card will do fine stil to this day.

200-300 buck cpu? more like 80 bucks 10100f, cores are not interesting when they are not used and when u need more cores? u just upgrade to a budget more core version a year later, power of pc building

150 motherboard + ram? more like 60 bucks + 25 bucks ( yea shit is that cheap) so 70 bucks

300 for a case psu cpu cooler and cables? what are you building? case is as expensive as u want it to be, it just holds parts nothing more, its straight up 25 bucks u already have a case, psu cooler is boxed in with the cpu no cost at all, and power supply 37 bucks. What the hell are you even building

Mouse keyboard again as expensive as u make it, i got a 5 buck keyboard best shit ever, my mouse is more expensive but that's because i want it too, u can buy mouses for like 5 bucks easily also which work perfectly fine.

more like like 1-3 bucks windows if you even want to buy it to start with

so lets see how much that is
80 = cpu
150 = gpu
60 = motherboard
0 = cpu cooler
25 = ram
25 = case
37 = power supply
10 = mouse,keyboard,windows

total: 387

U tried tho.

Sure, same as I can sell my PS4 Pro for $300+ and buy the PS5 DE for $400, net spend of < $100.

Whats the point of buying a new GPU but reusing the same old CPU and other parts? PC owners still have to buy all those other parts, which are a significant sunk in cost. Trying to compare the price of 1 PC component to an entire console is pathetic.

Oh just shut the hell up

I mean, he's right, but that doesn't make the PS5 any less valid. Especially when you factor in exclusives.

The XSX makes less sense to me for enthusiasts, unless you're really into Xbox 360 BC or something.

Financially you cannot argue that a PC is better, at least not a good one. I could buy way more games on my PS5 than I could ever play for the price I paid to upgrade my GPU and CPU this year and it would be a good gaming experience. That said, I get more satisfaction out of knowing that I am getting the best gaming experience I can get on the multiplats on my PC. I just like it. And I like it enough to blow over 2k upgrading an 3700x system I built at launch with a dated GPU. Who fucking cares really? Consoles are good but restrictive and you get no real say in what goes into the build, and PCs are stupid expensive but have much more raw power and you can upgrade incrementally. Plus every build you get to analyze the options, understand the tradeoffs, put together something that is just right, and then convince yourself you deserve more and blow an extra $500 on it. You can't do that with a console.

No one but a retard would pay $100 for windows. Moreover, any GPU right now will end up paying for itself mining, so the cost argument truly goes out the window. If you like consoles for convenience & exclusives - fine, but the cost argument is idiotic.

Sorry I forgot to write "storage" in that $300 part. I was including the cost of a SATA SSD in the rough estimate. A 1 TB SSD is about $100 right? Plus a case and power supply, an HDMI cable, and (if needed) a CPU cooler, is about $200 right? (I assume a power supply includes a power cable to plug into the wall outlet.) All I know is some AMD CPUs include a cooler, many do not.

Forgive me I have not built a PC just trying to estimate average costs. Such a huge range. I'm talking new parts btw not used.

And idk what the deal is with Windows. I googled cost of Windows 10 and I saw it was over $100. Whatever, if theres cheaper ways to get it then ok. Ignore that part idk.

Wasn't trying to exaggerate on costs. But some will spend much more or less than what I wrote, cause it varies in PC gaming.

I made that PC in the PS3 area mate and dropped 80 bucks or something on it when PS4 came out. U upgraded from a PS3 towards a PS4 then PS4 pro then PS5 and yet that PC still plays cyberpunk at 30+ fps without problems and 99% of the games at 60 fps at high settings something only the PS5 can do/ I would not be shocked if that GPU will last all the way to end of this generation if nvidia not decides to pull the plug on the card after a decade.

The point about upgrading parts is because u upgrade what u want to get better performance on. A 3060 at 1440p with rtx on + ultra settings will still bottleneck over a 10 year old CPU in cyberpunk. My old as shit 10 year old cpu still rolls ~45 fps in cyberpunk fps wise with dips to low 30's and highs of high 50's. 99% of the other games it plays its still a rock solid 60 fps. Imagine a bit newer cpu. Or imagine a 80 buck any cpu current date which absolutely steamrolls that cpu. there you go.

Consoles are expensive, they always where. buying the box is one thing u need games with it and controllers and subscriptions. With PC u just replace your hardware and your experience is just upgraded as everything is still playable all the way from 30 years ago without effort. And new games drop insanely hard on value wise. even cyberpunk is now like 25 bucks on keysites. a month later, u see this constantly with pc its cheap to get into stuff and if u don't want to support it or have no money there are ways for you to play games that u want.

Then we are not even talking about multitasking etc. PC absolutely destroys consoles on this front, while people are hyping quick resume or fast loading on a PS5, they forget that with PC u can run multiple things next to eachother all day long and play pretty much multiple games at the same time.

I play like 2-3 games at the same time ( divinity 2 on a screen, wow auction house on another screen with minesweeper ) with a screen that has excel sheet i read my notes on out and make guides for games for, while coding a bit for a emulator on another screen + read out chats and watching some content on yet another screen. If i would have to sit behind a single screen playing a single game i would get bored to no end and anybody that has multiple monitors on there PC know exactly what i mean when they lost a screen.

Oh i also talk with people on discord and on teamspeak while i do all of this and react to forums, even while i stream and talk with people there. All my screens allow me to do that on the fly. consoles do not offer any of it. Its a extremely limited experience with limit content that u would honestly think in 2021 they would have figured out by now specially microsoft.

Gamepass is a nice jump forwards but hard to sell to parents when its not tagged along with a subscription of something a parent would profit out of like netflix. Wii was easily sellable to parents because "fitness box", ds was easily sellable because "puzzle box makes me smarter mom" and ps2 was easily sellable as movie box ( dvd ) when physical was still a thing.

Gamepass not so much.

However if they did make a xbox series X with windows dual boot that give you full control over the box and play every game as they optimize a profile for every game for there hardware with it, it could very well kill a large part of the PC crowd as the box isn't all that bad at the end. It's just the software and the company's that completely derb out and limit those boxes to no end.

I wasn't necessarily using it as a baseline just a quick example. What would you propose the baseline be for PS+ when I'm sure someone has probably sold a code to someone else for $10 etc.

Just saying which ever way you want to spin it you can argue in favour of both. Heck for all I know someone may get all their PS5 games brand new from a friend who steals them from work and sells at a quarter of the price or someshit if you want to take it extreme. A PC user may know a shady Key seller or just pirate the games.

However you want to spin it the potential is there for either one to be more expensive than the other nomatter how many infinite possible hypothetical scenarios people want to use to argue their side is correct.

Let's compare in 5 years. Consoles have a tendency to last way longer and deliver superior graphics, when compared to hardware released within the first year of console releases.

Ridiculous slippery slope argument. The sale price has historically been $30. You can verify this by doing a quick google search.

Well for PC you have
-dead online multiplayer for most games that are popular on consoles and need crossplay to survive.
-waiting 1 to 2 years for a game to be ported after port begging.
-crappy unoptimized performance of ported game after waiting for 2 years
-dealing with more cheaters if there is anyone to play with online
-dealing with multiple store fronts since epic started getting exclusive deals
-obsessing with max settings and jacking off to FPS counts instead of just playing the game
-good luck if you use the Microsoft store or GAMEPASS in PC

LUL wat at first 3? That's barely the case anymore. The "console" PC shooters I play have fantastic (if only in reference to their activity level) online communities (Destiny 2, COD). Some ported games are crap, some are glorious, even from the same bespoke engine: See Horizon and Death Stranding. Once is amazing and one is poorly optimized. It's all up to the studios. This is changing rapidly. See beginning of last gen COD ports. The last bad one was Ghosts. They understand there's money there so there's appropriate resources dedicated to it. Please stop gaslighting and pretending like it's some niche thing that needs to be propped up. Devs understand that PC gaming is immensely popular now, and the consoles are the most PC like they've even been. Of course crossplay is going to become a thing that people barely think about as incredibly commonplace and effective--why would you NOT want the best connections and largest playerbase? That doesn't serve to make ANY of your points since console gamers demanded it just as loudly.

Anyway, I don't have a horse in this race. I have a ps5, One X and plan to possibly get a Series X somewhere down the line for couch gaming. Your post reads like a console warrior's (I have a 4k120fps 43 inch display hooked up to my PC. It has an obvious and immediate superiority in smoothness and motion clarity compared to playing at 4k60fps on my 4k TV. I'm not 'jacking off to it', just enjoying what I paid for because I have eyes).

And PC game pass is fine. Give it a rest.

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
none of that makes it cost any less. Lets not pretend that building gaming PCs are even close to consoles in value.

While this is true and im not disputing it.
It kinda is missing the point because people dont actually buy whole new PCs every GPU generation.
Even with selling old consoles the money back from PC hardware 90% of the time outdoes consoles.
But in terms of raw value as a pure gamer......consoles cant be beat.
If all you do is game on your hardware a console just makes sense.

If you are building a whole system then the cost is obviously higher on the PC.....but the GPU actually pays for itself within 3 months because you can use it to mine.....the console never pays for itself lest you use it as an arcade unit.

Well for PC you have
-obsessing with max settings and jacking off to FPS counts instead of just playing the game
Hahaha are you new to NeoGAF?
Because PC players dont do this, drop settings to get to 60 and call it a day, hell autosettings in games today get you to 60 nine times outta ten so you dont even need to tinker with any settings.

Console gamers?:
OMG The XSX drops frames to 50 instead of 60 once every 100 hours what the shit 50 page thread.

Literally all your points are generalizations.
Games that are popular on console are generally also popular on PC.
Other than exclusive deals what games right now have 2 year long port periods?
Unoptimized performance.....what 2 year old ports from any reputable dev has been unoptimized?
More cheaters cant argue with that....certain more than on console.
Multiple store fronts isnt exactly an issue, no exactly sure why thats listed there.
Never had any issue with Gamepass on PC the issue isnt anywhere near as prevalent as people make it out to be.

Please stop gaslighting. Devs understand that PC gaming is immensely popular now, and the consoles are the most PC like they've even been. Of course crossplay is going to become a thing that people barely think about as incredibly commonplace and effective--why would you NOT want the best connections and largest playerbase?

I have no horse in this race either. I was PC exclusive last gen, and I had many issues with finding people to play with. Don’t know about latest COD, but when I was playing advance warfare, the online player base was pathetic compared to Xbox and PlayStation. I played some Street Fighter 5 and if it wasn’t for crossplay with PlayStation, it would be dead online. I bought dead or alive 6 on PC at launch and it took forever to find matches. It’s pretty much dead now. Then you see threads likes Dirt 5 which was recently released had a peak of around 800 players online. I now have a PS5 and play Mortal Kombat 11. Go ask players on PC how pissed they are that there is no crossplay for them because the port was handled by a different company. And then even when a game has cross play, you have the option to disable playing with PC players. The fact is the mass of people play on consoles and that is where the action is. I got tired of it and went back to console.

Edit - GAMEPASS might be fine for you but I had many problems with it. Couldn’t get wasteland 3 to work. Couldn’t play crusaders 3. Games uninstalled still have files laying around. Look it up, a lot of people have problems and MS doesn’t do shit to fix it. The MS store has been awful for so long and it’s pathetic.

Also don’t get me started with NBA 2k or FIFA and madden where they are still stuck on last gen engines. Why should my PC that is more powerful then PS5 be stuck on the ps4 engine? Same thing happened with when ps4 first came out. pC was stuck on ps3/360 engine. Had to wait another year. The companies just don’t make PC a priority.

Paid multiplayer
Expensive games
Less than 800gb ssd drive
Only limited to single input controller, no built in cross platform peripherals support
Region locks
Can do nothing except gaming and limited streaming through apps often inferior to other platforms
Games cost the same as for PC
Stop spreading nonsense

Don't know about that. Console is definitely easy plug and play comfort but PC gives you so much flexibility. Great discounts, mods, graphic settings etc.
Until your pc gets corrupted by a windows update, or you get hacked and the hacker sees you jerking off because you forgot to put a tape on the webcam to cover or your fav game runs like shit on your build, or any other hundred more possibilities of your PC being a waste of money, if you just plan to game in it
