A modern Obsidian Fallout New Vegas would be utter shit: The Moden Obsidian Dilemma

Before you ready your torches and pitchforks hear me out first,

I think alot of people are forgetting that alot of time has passed between Fallout New Vegas and now.

10 years to be exact.

What does that mean for a studio? Everything.

Chris Avellone who was the lead writer for Falout New Vegas's story left the company after NV. He is one of the best story writers in video games to date.

He'll also likely never write anything for a game again following his canceling last year.
Especially not for a company like Obsidian who in recent years became very woke (dare I remind you of The Outer Worlds and team pictures from their dev studio?)

The Outer Worlds was a mixed bag. While in general there's many positive responses there's also plenty of negative ones. "Too woke" "boring quests, boring world, etc"

With New Vegas the picture is something different. The general opinion if this game is very positive. There's only a few who really didn't like New Vegas, or atleast think it isn't the best Fallout ever but still a good game.

In all those years Bethesda Game Studios, for example, never really changed. TODD is still the executive producer and studio head, Hines is still their marketing guy and most of the people who worked on Oblivion and even Morrowind are still there, right now, working on Starfield and TES Vl. Even their lead story writer hasn't changed in yeeeeeears (which you can count as a good or bad thing, ill leave that up to you).

Long story short: I think a modern New Vegas title or Fallout in general, made by Obsidian, would probably dissapoint more people that are actually aware of it. It probably would be a mixed bag like The Outer Worlds.....at best.

Also do you really wanna live in a Woke Fallout world?

The question stands, if Bethesda would say they'd lend the fallout IP to someone else, would they take Obsidian? Probably not.

They also made PoE2 didn't they? Not played but I know that game gets recognition.

Bethesda have more to prove to me right now. Fallout 4 was Fallout 3.5 and 76 was an unprecedented disaster.

This is exactly what worries me. Obsidian just isn't what it used to be and neither is Bethesda (If they get involved). I'll be surprised if a FNV successor isn't bad.

I have to say, after the "meh" The Outer Worlds, which I was hyped for because Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain were the dudes behind it, I've become a bit more cautious. I still want to give Obsidian the benefit of the doubt however because The Outer Worlds clearly was constrained by a limited budget.

I want to see what both dudes can do when they have a large budget behind them.

To me, Outer Worlds was a fine game. It didn't really excel in any ways but I found it to be worth my time and had fun with. I honestly don't see the woke angle, but perhaps those things don't mean much to me.

I do completely agree however, that it did not live up to the storytelling and world building of Fallout NV (or Bethesdas output before Fallout 4). I think for me, the satire and tone of the game was a little off. I'd like it to be tighter for a future effort (whatever that means).

I think they've still proven their writing chops through other games though. I haven't played PoE 1 or 2 but hear overwhelmingly positive things about them. And I quite enjoyed Tyranny. I'd like to see them do something different like that again.

Could they do another Fallout NV? Maybe not. But I'm still curious to see how their next games go. I think their track record is still pretty good, even if you found Outer Worlds to be a bit disappointing.

Chris Avellone is not the lead writer of New Vegas, John Gonzalez is. Also, most of the main guys who worked on New Vegas are at Obsidian (like Josh Sawyer, and such). These people simply became more political in the last 10 years and want to put their ideals in games (which they have the right to do).

I honestly don't see Obsidian ever working on Fallout again, and I also see the Fallout franchise dropping out of existence for awhile (10 to 15 years). The hype that existed for Fallout 4 is not there yet for the next Fallout.

The Outer Worlds only got negative reviews cause it was labeled “Fallout killer” when it wasn’t even a AAA game. People went in with stupid expectations. When people look at it objectively and stop comparing it to other games with much bigger budget you will see that the game is good

You do know Fallout 76 exists which gets updated with new content regurlary aswell as Amazons new Fallout TV show?

Fallout definitely won't be gone the next 10-15 yeara

The Outer Worlds got labeled as fallout killer and it was an AA game lol.

The Outer Worlds franchise has much more potential than Fallout so it would be better if they could make a sequel with AAA budget.

Larian should make a new fallout btw

Fallouts problems are solvable, address it’s weakness, and take a play out of Witcher’s, Horizon’s playbook and use a good op’ engine. You want Fallout in the same conversation with Uncharted and GTA than solve your problems.

Fallout should be the exact opposite of this. Fallout 4 is generally regarded as the worst fallout/BGS Maryland game because of the voiced protagonist and weightless choices.

Horizon isn't even an RPG lol

A new Fallout NV wouldn't be as good as the OG because almost no game is. The Outer Worlds was a fine game, and with a bigger budget I'm sure they can make a palatable Fallout game, but of course it won't stand up to a legit GOAT tier one.

Why not? They cranked that game out in what, 14 months or something? They've got a lot of pros with decades of experience who have only gotten better. Now, they'll get a real budget with real QA and enough time.

When you complain about wokeness, your argument holds even less weight.

Outer Worlds was a bit short and rushed, but as others said Pillars of Eternity II is an excellent game - and what really stands out in it is the writing and art style.

I think Obsidian works best when they can reuse an existing engine and just build from it, so they would benefit from working on a spin-off project from a Bethesda game (not that Bethesda engines are that much better but you see what I mean).

Edit: Also there was nothing wrong about Parvati and her quest in TOW, not sure what the big fuss is about?

I think he might be referring to "What's the problem with wokeness?", as in why would you use such argument to make your point?

Obsidian along with Larian are the only devs worth talking about when we're talking about RPGs.
The point is alot of people don't share the same mindset and DO care about no wokeness or politics in their games and theres also alot of them probably who havent even thought of that yet. Which was my intention to make this topic.

Well I beg to disagree. BGS still has the best and most immsersive franchise (TES), best RPG imo

It's fine, i lost a bit of interest after Morrowind, still played Oblivion, Skyrim just doesn't cut it for me.

Dw, you're not the only one, even under TES fans the opinions range from "best game ever" to "utterly shit" when it comes to Skyrim. Most hardcore fans will tell you Oblivion was their favourite

The best for me is still Morrowind, that game with a new combat system would be amazing.

Woke was not the problem of Outer Worlds (never noticed it), but the lack of creativity. They essentially copy-pasted Fallout 3 and just changed the backdrop a little. I'm not interested in playing 15 years old games. The game was really lame and boring through and through.

This is why I tell people wait for the games to actually come out to see if they are good before doing backflips claiming that they are on par or better than Sony and Nintendo’s offerings.

That's why Im eagerly waiting for Skywind.

Morrowind has the most nostalgic memories for 90% of TES fans, kinda deludes the view of it alittle.
True, it had some shitty areas, and the fucking Cliff Racers, holly shit. The Dunmer strongholds could get a bit repetitive and i hated the bonewalkers with the damn spell that drained your strength. But the races, locations etc. was everything so amazing.

uhm, Outer Worlds is a better game than anything Bethesda released in the last 15 years or so... better controls, better combat, actually decent animation for attacks etc. which leads to actually good visual feedback... all of that is missing from any Bethesda game.

Outer Worlds is obviously technically better than Skyrim but not better in other aspects. It's debatable if it's better than FO4 tho.

I'm inclined to agree with you OP. After The Outer Worlds I'm very skeptical about Obsidians future output. It's not just that the game felt like SJW fanfiction, it's how hollow and bland the thing was. I know it was a AA production in terms of scope, but it had all of the pieces there to be a great, memorable game and they whiffed. It has no staying power. Hell, Fallout 4 - a massive disappointment in every sense - was more memorable and entertaining than Outer Worlds.

Outer Worlds: My time with that game was... okayyy... The game felt to shallow for an RPG. By some point in the game I was just walking through the content in a chase to finish the main story. I was bored with it around the 75-80% mark.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Is a fine example of a game made for previous fans. I had no idea of what I was doing games mechanics wise. I detested the game's sea battles. After getting off the first island I was chased by other ships and absolutely destroyed. It completely ruined the game for me. I do not find sea voyaging or battles particularly my forte, but this game made it feel like you HAD to do it as part of the main mechanics.

Fallout New Vegas: Felt like a fallout game that was presented through the lens of reading an encyclopedia on the universe. Way too deep of exploration, involvement, and lore. I feel dirty saying that as I find that the enjoyable part of the extras of RPG gameplay. FONV was just... too much.

Obsidian is one of those studios that desperately tries to do things no one else does as their schtick. It is rare that I find their products enthralling. With that said I always keep an eye on the horizon for their new products to see if they actually put out anything that is worth my time. To date, ehhh /shrug.

It felt shoehorned in to me. Minutes after I land on the station and talk to the captain Parvati is already in a relationship with her. It barely even evolved beyond 1 or 2 lines of dialog before then. It could have been handled so much better.

Fallout New Vegas never moved me and the Outer Worlds was kinda similar to me. I think part of the reason is the different eras in which these games were produced. Personally, I've never been a huge fallout fan. I've played and beat the latest 3 games (not including 76, cuz fuck that game) but I never walked away like it was an amazing experience.

I think Obsidians offerings have no way to go but up from this point. Hopefully the extra boost from Microsoft will give them what they need to make it happen.

Pathetic of you to post this.

So because they have women on staff and they are Bi, they have the option for a gay relationship, and one is asexual, the entire game is 'woke' and the studio is 'woke'.

Shut the fuck up with this bullshit, yall are just as bad as fucking Resetera clowns with their incessive obsession with the far right, clowns like you are obsessed with anything 'woke'

I didnt even like The Outer Worlds but fuck all this shit.

Keep this garbage outta here. These are human beings like you and me who just prefer a different sexual orientation. Is that reason enough for you to absolutely shit on them? Make a paint like this? Sad sack of shit.
