US20200384362 CUSTOM VOICE CONTROL OF VIDEO GAME CHARACTER (wipo.int)

Text from Image:
“Systems and methods are disclosed for enabling a player of a video game to designate custom voice utterances to control an in-game character. One or more machine learning models may learn in-game character actions associated with several player-defined utterances based on player demonstration of desired character actions. During the execution of an instance of a video game, current game state information may be provided to the one or more trained machine learning models based on an indication that the player spoke a given utterance. A system may then cause one or more in-game actions to be performed by a non-player character in the instance of the video game based on the output of the one or more machine learning models.”

So how do you think this will pan out? In which EA games will it be useful? Useful for accessibility?

Can't see it being used for direct control (except maybe slow paced games). Can see it more used for triggering player celebrations in fifa etc. when you scream after a goal or if you yell expletives to go and have a kickoff at the ref

Will be an upward hill too, even Amazon,Apple and Google have problem with voice controls after years of R&D. How will they manage the accents is a problem too.

Sounds like something I would have expected a company like Google to patent first.

As far as EA games I think could benefit, any with NPC's that work in concert with the player - such as in a potential follow up to Squadrons. Tell Red Leader to bomb the cruiser or cover you, whatever.

I don't see how EA could patent this since it's been done before.

In patent law, "someone already did this" is called "prior art". In theory it should prevent you from getting a patent - but since the USPTO suck huge hairy donkey balls it generally doesn't and the only way to get even a plainly bogus patent invalidated is legal action. I would estimate that something like 99% of the patents issued in the last 20 years are complete bullshit - but the reality is that if you do manage to get some bullshit patent and only try to extort a small amount of money as "license fees" (I.E. less than it would cost to challenge the patent) then you can get away with it over and over.
