DF - Days Gone on PS5 - Super Smooth at 60FPS - But Can It Survive The Horde?

One of two PlayStation 5 Sony first party exclusives to benefit from a 60fps upgrade for PlayStation 5, Days Gone benefits tremendously from the upgrade, with the vast majority of standard gameplay holding steady at 60fps - but can it survive the 300-strong onslaught of the Horde in challenge mode? NOTE: An error in this piece - while Days Gone, The Last Guardian and God of War are a part of the PlayStation Collection, Ghost of Tsushima is not.

Summary:

- Base PS4 vs PRO vs PS5
- Richard mention about a rumor telling the game was push settings even more further, but looks like the game remains with PRO upgrade
- Base PS4 runs at native 1080p target 30 fps
- PRO use checkerboard render to reach 4k target 30 fps
- PS5 use the same settings of PRO, but target 60 fps
- Richard mention maybe was a decision to not push higher settings to not compromisse so much the framerate
- The game runs quite stable in comparison with base PS4 and PRO
- On cutscenes, there are minor drops and studders over single drop scene
- The real test stress is obvious fightning the horde
- The first horde have less freakers, but Richard say thats quite impressive that the base PS4 maintain 30 fps even with the horde
- Both consoles reach they target with the lesser horde
- As IGN mention there is possible to force multiple horders encounters, Richard prefer using the challenge mode
- The maximum horde numbers IF you force is 500 freakers
- On the other hand, challenge force 300 freakers
- As the test begin Richard force heavy CPU condition
- Kick off using a napalm molotov and some barrel explosions to push physicis limits
- As the result, base PS4 get drops to 20 in some heavy scenes
- PRO get the same results, no much impact as base PS4
- PS5 using the same case still get some drops to 52~54, but after particle effects and heavy physics gone he recover the framerate

Almost forgot the challenge. Still missing only one trophy to beat.

Again, you can go even further pushing the console to their limits on the last area of the game. Mix the last hordes with some random encounters.

The obtusity of Richard is something else. It's not because ps5 can't handle it at higher resolution or better graphic setting at stable 60 FPS. You can't push higher resolution or whatelse with hardware BC mode, it's not virtual coded as series X. Developers on ps5 can solely unlock FPS in BC otherwise you need to create a dedicated patch which probably requires a notable job and investment.

ok then... I finished it on the slim and by the end textures loaded very slowly and the performance was sub 30 all the time.
I am not a huge fan of the game but I am willing to play it again. Will be a big upgrade for me coming from slim.
The game is more than sum of it's parts... and each part is kinda terrible so that is surprising.

Are you serious? Do you realize how much is going on in this game at times? You found a frame where the framerate fell to 52 and are going to act like that that's the end of the world?

But, yes, Series X has the advantage in BC so far and PS5 has the advantage in current-gen new games. The differences in both are hardly big enough to even matter though.

I'm not impressed with these fps unlocks.

I had really hoped for actual ps5 patches as I want 4k 60fps not 1440p CB 60fps or seemingly less fps.

Did they ever push any Xbox games like this one? Tweaking the settings (500 zombies) in order to have the worse case possible? I doubt it.

When a XSX can barely do 1.5x better than XBX (so most exclusive games) he says it's because of RDNA1 BC code. But here the PS5 does 2.5x better than Pro but can't do better because the PS5 can't handle it? how odd.

Update, not upgrade. There is no PS5 version, just a patch unlocking the framerate.
Watch the final minutes of the video. Days Gone would require a native PS5 app to take 100% of the PS5 hardware.
Don't tell me, tell DF, they say it's an explicit upgrade(nearly 30 secs into the video) while later on they say it's running in PS4 Pro BC mode with uncapped fps. 👀

I'm 30 hours in and it looks and runs great on the PS5. The weather effects are amazing, as is the setting itself, with the American wilderness as backdrop. Flawed writing and characters, and some weird directing in some of the cutscenes, as well as some hilarious bugs and glitches, but overall Days Gone is an underrated gem for sure. Based on the reactions upon release I expected a train wreck. PS5 owners should definitely dive in if it's the first time. No regrets.

I don't need to tell them. Richard adress that at the end of the video.

Days Gone is a PS4 game running on PS5 via BC with receive a patch to 'unlock the framerate', in others word PS5 'bruteforce' the game to run at 60 fps, just like most of the PC games getting bruteforce to overcome sometimes their bad optimization.

Why are you acting like you’ve made a great discovery. All PS4 games on ps5 are in BC boosted.

Don't care. It's still a ps4 game and doesn't have dualsense support.

It needs a full remaster/remake to justify playing it again on next-gen because the fuck i load it up and am stuck on an island surrounded by water i can't get through because the developers didn't code swimming mechanics is mutiny.

Is it that huge jump with your motorcycle area?

Seems so. I'm able to make it on and collect the nero intel but can't seem it make it out
Your bike should still be there somewhere, you have to go back up the hill and make the big jump again if it's the same area

Those 500 freakers are more intelligent than a single NPC on CyberPunk 2077. Can't wait for the next sequel.

Did any of you bother to watch the video before shitting on DF again? I even bookmarked the relevant section for you:

This video shows when to apply your nitrous if that helps.

This is actually good since the game didn't get a PS5 update

Actually it got an update, but absolutely this is not the PS5 version, of course not a real upgrade, and it doesn't take advantage of all PS5 resources, very very far from...

As I said, I can't wait for the sequel on PS5 :messenger_winking:

Where did you get that 1440p from? It's 4K CB, which looks sharper than native 1440p.
