Anyone seen any good movies lately?

Tenet was a steaming pile of shit for the most part. I did not enjoy that assault on simple logic. A poor showing of suspension of disbelief at best.

I will give Robert Pattinson credit for killing it though, he was solid throughout. Also dude from Kick Ass held up well. The main protagonist was good but not great, probably more due to me personally just not feeling it with him as the movie went on.

Watched this over the weekend. It's a murder mystery from the director of Parasite. Tremendous film and superior to Parasite imo.

I'm currently re-watching Snakes on a Plane on HBO Max.

I enjoyed it when it first came out so I thought I would give it a re-watch as I don't remember it very well. Was curious if my tastes have changed over the past 15 years since it was initially released.

It's still pretty great.

Promising Young Woman - cinema
This movie was so so damn good and Carey Mulligan was fan flippin tastic. It's about a woman whos life and mental state has gone down the drain due to what happened to her friend during college. She spends her weekends getting revenge on sleezebag men who try to date rape women. If you're one of those people that hated the sexist men and Cheetah beating up the sleezeball in WW84 I'd suggest staying away. And the ending, darn, did not see that coming at all.

New Tale of Zatoichi(1963) 7.5/10 The third best film about a blind master swordsman yakuza who gives massages on the side. Would however say watch The Tales of Zatoichi(1962) first. Same actor (Katsu) but better story.

Duck, You Sucker(1971) 7/10 This one had been on my list for a while. I love me some Man with no name trilogy, really liked Once Upon a Time in the West.... and thought Once Upon a Time in America was decent enough. This film fits firmly between the two quality groups. Great flick with some weird AF "introspective" scenes that are sup[pose to make you think.... but don't.

Pretty in Pink(1986) 8/10 Awesome tale of Americana (youth) in the go go 80s. Molly Ringwald is absolutely Fierce! Maybe the most worthwhile of the John Hughes teen bops.

Watched Tenet tonight. It was entertaining enough but I was kinda chuckling throughout because it's just so Christopher Nolan-y that it's starting to feel like a parody of his own movies at this point. Dude is obsessed.

I'd love to know if he thought audiences were going to be confused with that movie. Did it blindsided him when reviews came out or was he expecting it?

Been on a Stephen King film streak, I don't know why but I love adaptations of his stuff, particularly the older, lower profile ones.

The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken was neat. A lot of stories would have used the "this man can touch you and see your fate" thing and used a serial killer investigation as the climax but this film takes it beyond that.

I watched Hearts in Atlantis for the second time in about 17 years. That's a bittersweet film. Anthony Hopkins is great in this and the child actor was excellent so I was saddened to see it was a young Anton Yelchin. Hopkins is almost 90 years old now and he outlived that poor guy.

I watched Free Solo on Disney+. Its a great documentary about rock climber Alex Hannold:

I use to do a shit load of bouldering

To do that climb free solo is mind boggling, and he was recovering from a broken ankle, his brain is just wired differently to normal humans

Its a ridiculous hard climb too, even with ropes, so to do free solo......I get the sweats just thinking about it

Fish Tank is such a good movie. Watched it for the first time in a while. Katie Jarvis has one of the best debut performances from an actor I've ever seen. She's so good in this. A movie not a lot of people know about, but it's great.

Have you seen Gerald’s Game yet? It’s a recent film but it’s excellent

Speaking of Mountain Climbing, one of the most soul crushing moments I've ever had watching anything was an episode of Locked Up Abroad where a mountain climber was taken hostage in South America by militants and some of his friends were executed and he either ended escaping or being freed(I forget which) and then you see how happy he was talking about his ordeal. And then at the end of the episode it said "After filming this episode he died in a tragic mountain climbing accident."

And I just started crying. If anyone's seen the show you start to really root for these people and you know they all live since they're being interviewed and this guy was really likeable.

Anyway, it broke my heart knowing he survived something so awful and ended up dying not too long after.

Very good film. Obviously dated (and probably not even accurate for the time), but it was great. You really get a feel for how Sheen is spinning his wheels in life early in the film. The stress of his office and of he and his colleagues is palpable. And then things get interesting... Story is pretty good and an entertaining ride. Michael Douglass was solid, Sheen Sr was ok, and Hannah was serviceable.

Watched the first season of this tonight on Amazon Prime. It's small government propaganda but it's alright.

It feels like a lot of documentaries are pretty one sided. Can anyone recommend any docs that feel incredibly fair and honest?

Heck, I'm still working through The West by Ken Burns and I'm picking up little hints of "America bad" from him there. Still really well done.

The last movie I saw that I really liked was the Death of Stalin like 3 months ago.
I normally don't like it when english speaking actors play non english speaking characters (specially if it's historical characters) but I'll let this one slide because it's one of the first comedies I've seen in years that was a actually, at least IMO, consistently funny
This mirrors my experience with the film. It was the first time in years where I legitimately lol’d while watching. Very funny movie.

Saw all the Riddick movies the past couple of days.

Would rate em all 7/10, with Pitch Black being the best and Chronicles of Riddick the worst. The shift in tone from Ptich Black to Riddick was insane. Can't believe Vin Diesel thought that blowing this character into such a huge story would work out... Should have kept them small scale and not make it LotR big (according to imdb :messenger_tears_of_joy: ). Diesel was a funny guy around that time.

In this post I will identity why this movie sucks.

- There's an obnoxious amount of CGI in it. CGI in a Western is sacrilegious. It's everywhere in this movie.

- It's blatant left-wing propaganda. I'm fine with that but at least lube up before sticking it in so violently.

- There's a lot of unbelievable scenes in it where people would never behave the way they do IRL.

- The costume design is awful. Everything looks brand new. You can almost see the tags popping out. Rub some dirt on stuff for goodness sakes!

I'll give it a 4/10 because it's a Western and Westerns are the best. Plus Tom Hanks is in it and he seems nice.

I watched The Town last night.

This is one of the few Heist films I hadn't seen. I really dig them as a genre - I feel like there is always some value to be found. Even if it's just the bank robbery scenes. I like that these movies tend to always have a list of high-profile actors as crew members/supporting cast, it always makes them worth watching. Everyone is really good in this movie, even Blake Lively surprised me. I had constantly heard good things about this movie but always passed on it for some reason. Either way, definitely worth the wait!

Ben Affleck isn't up there with my favourite actors, but he excels in this film. Did an absolute great job directing it too. Affleck is great when he wants to be, and I think he really nails facial acting. He can tell a lot with just his expressions. Jeremy Renner is absolutely amazing in this film, one of his best performances I've seen aside from Wind River. I think he was the stand-out here, I was seriously impressed with how good he was.

I like that this movie delved deeper in to the more human & drama side of heists. Some of those movies sometimes go for action over character development, but not this one. It really is compelling watching someone lose interest in the crime life and seeing it develop throughout the movie. This is an underlying tension felt throughout which makes this incredibly watchable. The first big chase scene blew me away. I would highly recommend giving this movie a watch, it is currently on UK Netflix. Can't speak for other Netflix versions though, sadly!

If I had to give it a rating, I would give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. Not quite as good as Heat but a great film nonetheless. Heat is a very hard bar to top when it comes to these movies though, the realism and gun sounds are still unmatched to this day. I'd watch The Town again, which I don't do for most movies I see these days. It's one of those movies I can see being fun revisiting when I do a heist movie binge and rewatch all my favourites.

This part was pure awesome:

Just watched rocky for the first time in years, really is a great human story, u still root for rocky, and the fact sly wrote it. The script doesn't do anything mind boggling, but its got drama and heart, and the characters are all likeable, and broken in their own way.

Great sound track too

Still a great film, of its time

The King of Staten Island - based off Pete Davidson’s own life. The dude is talented and I hope he keeps getting starring roles.

Outside the Wire - all I need sometimes are guns and explosions. And this does it for me. I am here for every Netflix movie this year.

Wolfwalkers - beautiful animation. If you’re looking for something different, check this out.

Greyhound - WW2 at sea. Action packed movie. Probably the best Apple TV+ original.

Allied (2016). WW2 spy thriller starring Brad Pitt and Marion Collitard. Was quite good, I do recommend it.

Watched some 90s monster, horror flicks. For me, Deep Rising and The Relic are reminder to just ignore online reviews/scores. Good, entertaining movies.

Finally sat down and watched the following Hannibal Lecter movies:
  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
  • Hannibal (2001)
  • Red Dragon (2002)
Overall I liked all of them but The Silence of the Lambs is definitely the best out of those three imo. Is Hannibal Rising (2007) any good? Is the TV series worth watching? I've heard Mads Mikkelsen plays the role very well.
