Xbox controllers are still using AA batteries ‘because of long-term Duracell deal’, spokesperson claims

I'm kind of stunned that people would prefer having to buy batteries/packs. To each their own. I know there are horror stories but I've never had an issue with the internal battery in a rechargable controller.

I ,now, use Duracell rechargeable batteries, they are great and last longer than the previous I had.
Maybe I choose Duracell because they tricked me, goddam marketing witchcraft!!!

Nah, they were on sale at Amazon .
(14€ or 15€ for 8 batteries)

Or duracell could make internal rechargeables included with every Xbox controller, like every quality product made this decade. They could even keep them removable so those 5 guys that still switch them out can stay happy.

It's an extra expense that makes their product look a cheap child's toy. Full stop.

You keep saying this. Where is the evidence for your claims? This place would be blowing up if there was some sort of wide spread issue with the adaptive triggers.
I'm sorry that you have to look outside of this forum and explore the scary internet but if you just Google (that's a search engine) 'adaptive triggers breaking' then I am sure you will find plenty of instances of this happening.

However, for today I will provide a link to make it easier: https://www.google.com/search?q=ada...i67j0j0i67.2135j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Got to love how everybody enjoys changing out rechargable batteries!
Highlight of my life too.

what if horseshit were biscuits......
I've had Dualshock controllers that could not hold a charge for more than 30 minutes at a time because the battery had degraded so badly. At that point, you can't even call it a wireless controller as it has to be plugged-in and charging most of the time while playing, effectively making it a wired controller. The only remedy in that case is to void warranty on your product and replace the battery yourself or buy a new $60 controller. I wouldn't call that intuitive.

I don't care deeply about this but definitely prefer built-in batteries. I have not had major issues with a controller whose battery is outlasted by the other components; controllers tend to get kinda janky well before their battery causes me noticable problems. You have to replace the plastic / rubber toy once every few years anyways, why am I worried about the battery?

Also, the DualSense + charging base is just slick as all hell.

if it's under warranty send it back....

Some people are willing to pay for convenience believe it or not.
I think we all use both Xbox and Playstation controllers here. It's a matter of preference even though we all pay for both.

Anyway, I think swapping AA's is more convenient.

Void the warranty after 3-5 years of battery degradation

The convenience of not being able to replace the dead battery that causes your controller to last 25 minutes off charge? I'm really not sure what you're trying to say is convenient.
Non-replaceable batteries are a scurge. They're bad in phones and they're bad in controllers
Totally true.

Apple and Samsung should upgrade their hardware so phones can just use AA batteries instead of those awful 4000maH nim trash. Would make a revolutionary and much better product.

Even though all my controllers are rechargeable, I definitely LOVE duracell and their cute little bunnyrabbits! Thanks Phil.

Shouldn't the normal batteries prevent to add more advanced features in a controller besides the "basic" ones? Because I don't know if a controller with gyroscope, microphone, speakers, camera touchpad, haptic feedback and so on can have a decent batteries life without a lithium battery. I would think a bit about it before to say it's that better.

Let's be real, with today's battery technology and cheap manufacturing very few products outlast their internal battery.
3 of my last 4 phones all got junked not because they were junk but because their batteries were basically dead and I either could not get replacements or they were simply sealed in and I deemed it more work than it was worth.
Maybe this isn't a problem if you're a one man e-waste factory who chucks out flagship phones because they're so 2 months ago but I take care of my stuff and as such said stuff tends to outlive their batteries.

You are bizarrely aggressive over a videogame controller. Might be time to go for a walk. Make sure to plug in your Dualsense before you go so it can charge eh.

One would think Microsoft could buy their way out of the deal. I mean, it's 2021. Having disposable batteries in a device like this, that really hasn't changed much in seven+ years, makes it look and feel like a cheap toy for children. Like Fisher Price My First Video Game Controller. I'm a big kid now.

Meanwhile the Dualsense looks like jumping into Iron Man's suit and flying through a panoramic cityscape in comparison. Also, when you're done, you can just plug the thing in to charge and forget about it. Like every other device made over the last fifteen years.

I've had two company iPhones.

When I get it new, the battery seems great. Two years later, the battery is shit and seems to permanently deplete fast. And I even go into settings and try to shut off or delete apps I don't use so I only keep useful apps.

And I don't even use it to listen to music, or run movies and games which can drain it fast. Just normal work usage and checking sports scores or the net.

Lucky for me, I get a new company phone every 2-3 years. But if it was my own, I'd be forced to trade up for sake of battery time.

My iPhones and iPads have always held up, but the battery in my 2020 Macbook Pro went to shit pretty quickly. The first three months I could use it for light work and web browsing for a few hours before it hit 90%. Now it drops to 70% just from browsing the web with Safari in an hour and a half.

Gimmicks are gimmicks. It was cool at first but once the novelty wore off I turned them off for most games like cod.
Everything is gimmick in such hobby if we want to use this pretext. We can play COD at lower resolution with stereo sounds in a 18'' monitor SDR, what changes in the gameplay experience? It's all "gimmick".

I just hate when people pretend that an issue like this isn't real. I don't even have a PS5 yet but this certainly has made me rethink if I want one. The advantages of the PS5 controller may not be worth it if they are unreliable.

I get a work phone but still 100-400 to upgrade depending on your desired model. I have a S8 the battery is on its decline. Been trying to wait for new models to get s20 cheap.

Dualsense 1.56 Ah @ 3.7 V = 5.772 Wh

My two Lidl Tronix AA NiMH rechargables 2.45Ah @ 1.2V x2 = 5.88 Wh

..2 AAs is better or equivalent in power. (and way more than the battery in Dualshock 4)

I like my Enelop Rechargeable AAs 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’ve had several Xbox rechargeable batteries die and I’m not interested in buying anymore again.

Personal experience but I don't remind AA had a better battery life than a lithium

Was this some kind of leak to make the Xbox controller look bad and the new PS5 controller look good? lol this thread just highlighted how much everyone likes rechargeable AA batteries more than an internal battery.

What happens to your DS5 when the internal battery starts to fail and only lasts 2-3 hours. I've not had this issue with either of my DS4s (yet...probably helps that I'm using them with a PC and can turn the lightbar right down, far below what the PS4 can apparently manage) but one look at forums and you'll find them littered with posts complaining about battery life, especially after they've had it a couple of years. Li-ion batteries don't last forever.

I had my white DS4 controller for about 5 years and there was no noticeable difference. They may not last forever but they will last you the entire generation and then some.

This battery argument is extremely silly console wars ammo. How stupid do you have to be to believe the battery in Sony controllers only last two years and will burn your house down?

I used my ps4 pro ds4, and other ds4s with it, from release until my ps5 came in and I never had any issues with them dying or not holding a charge. I have a hard time believing that’s a widespread issue. As soon as I’m done playing I just put it on the charging stand and it’s always good to go with a full charge later. Can’t imagine having to go backwards to using batteries after having that convenience. It’s the one thing I’m dreading when I eventually get a series x next year.

I guess Sony has a partnership with battery companies too. When I got my Sony TV years ago, the remote control came with a tiny shrinkwrap of no-name AAA batteries.

TV remotes should be battery free rechargeable devices.

I thought this forum was full of hardcore gamers?

the more you use your controller the worse the battery gets, from day one of that first charge they get worse. The longer you you use them they get worse. So many people claiming they never had the DS controller battery’s still last, maybe they don’t use them as much as Xbox gamers then?
