FFXV is certainly a contender. What a terrible open world, terrible pacing and terrible mission design. MGSV was also pretty bad, I stopped using it and just went into missions via the menu and heli drops. I think the open world in that game gimped the level design a lot like how some open world racing games tend to gimp course design.

You nailed the 2 I dislike the most.

I think it is possibly worth noting he media shat on Mad Max because it stared the White Man Mad Max and not Strong Female Protagonist Imperator Furiosa who was very big in progressive circles at that point.

I liked it. Played it through twice. It’s a *great* game for turning your brain off and clearing an open world map, which... I mean sometime I want to do that, you know?

I played GTA 3 on my PS2. I wanted Vice City but my brother got this for me. The game had no bikes, at that time riding bikes in GTA was an important priority for me so GTA 3 is infact the worst open-world game I have played.
That is a hot take lol. GTA 3 was my first GTA game then Vice City then San Andreas

All of them. They get boring and repetitive after a few encounters. I'll take a hand-crafted linear experience like The Last of Us, over open-world borefest any day of the week.

It was a half-joke brother, don't take it seriously. When I was 6 years old I didn't even know English properly so I didn't understand anything happening in that game so can't comment on story and missions. I used to mostly ride around everywhere and shoot people. All my friends had the sequels like Vice City and San Andreas which had bikes and were more advanced so I was kinda pissed as a kid.

This looks like shit to you??

I agree with the bugs etc. but copy/paste buildings and horrific NPCs?

Unity is still a stunning a game today. I just played through it at 3440x1440(native support too, which is rare). But in my opinion, I think Unity is the last true AssCreed games. Origins/Odyssey(sucked)/Valhalla all share a formula that is very different than what AssCreed was. I wish they'd go back to Unity's awesome parkour and social stealth systems. Unity might have been pretty buggy at launch, but it now plays so well and runs excellent on PC.

My vote:

Two Worlds, an ACTUAL bad open-world game. There's a lot of edgelords on here choosing AssCreed and Oblivion, like, cmon, if that's the worst OWG you've played, you've either not played many OWG, or don't know what a bad one is.

Watch Dogs Legion gets my vote. Here's a brand new open world game with all that Ubisoft money behind it that is about as dull and lifeless an open world game that I have ever played. They just threw the Watch Dogs formula in and said to hell with story or characters. It is open world game that exists for its own sake entirely. Huge disappointment from a guy who actually enjoyed the first two games.
Well that's disappointing. I was considering buying it for PS5.

Not to defend Two Worlds, but I can appreciate how creative you can be in that speed run for solving problems. It reminds me of GTA3 and how you could approach missions before R* started stripping out the sandbox elements in mission designs for later entries in the series.

If the best thing about an open world game is the creativity of the community to figure out how to end it as quickly as possible, it's maybe not best look for an OWG.

Speedrunners try to get to the end of good and bad games as quick as possible, so that's not a great litmus test. Again, not defending Two Worlds. I still remember the cult of conversating around that game from people dissertate for their next TES fix.

Oblivion was absolutely revolutionary when it came out - people here are out of their minds.

My pick would be Driver 3 - no reason to be open world - and perhaps Crackdown 2, which was immensely boring to me.

LA Noire is much like Mafia games (excluding Mafia 3). The city is there to provide the atmosphere, it wouldn't be the same if you'd be instantly transported to where you're supposed to do missions.
The problem with LA Noir is not only the side missions on the map are mostly untied with the main story, but they also are very bland and poor designed. Lots of open world games have repetitive missions, but at least they are tied with the main core of the game.

worst take i've seen. inb4 cyberpunk btw lol.

i'm starting to think there are two kinds of gamers. people that can appreciate an open world city for what it is and people that see an open world city and think "i guess this is gta!" and this only happens in cities with cars. you make a medieval game and you can make it the most barren boring and static thing in the world but because it doesn't resemble gta no one will care. that is until rockstar makes grand theft knight and ruins it for everyone.

Horizon: ZD and Ghost of Tsushima certainly got a pass. They both have all the "broken and unfinished" parts of Cyberpunk yet received GOTYs left and right. Bad NPC AI, check. Broken and easy stealth, check. Map Icon overload, check. Open world with "nothing to do," double check. Full discloure, I adore GoT. I couldn't get past more than a handful of hours in H:ZD. The wooden voice acting and an opening side quest consisting of pick 10 flowers or whatever was an instant turn-off. I'll chalk it up as a game not meant for me.

Mafia 2 takes the crown for me if only for the awful paid DLC post release. That stuff was so terrible.

Shoutout for the Mad Max love. Those storms were a treat.

All of the ones that don't allow you to casually murder all of the NPCs on a whim are definitely deficient.

Totaly agree with you.It is the last true assassin's creed, well i haven't played Syndicate which doesn't seem to far off either. I know that the map gets cluttered etc. but damn it, the parkour feels amazing in this game.

Ah! That reminds me, The First Rage had a terrible, barren open world.

Though not intentionally an open world, got to give a shout out to Big Rigs

I was gonna post this, because anyone who knows about it knows that it's the ACTUAL correct answer to the thread.
Seriously, people. Just watch a video on this one.

Great game, terrible and pointless open world.
This is where i disagree. If it is a great game who cares if it has a "terrible and pointless open world". What do you want, chests and pointless activities icons spread across a map? Just treat it has a linear game and let the open world setting help with the immersion.

I don't prefer open world games, so unless I'm very interested by one I just kind of avoid them entirely. I would have to say FFXV, I didn't even hate the game but I feel the open world was honestly not necessary for the game.

The open world had no point. It was huge and empty and nothing to do. I don't need or want a lot with an open world, but the game didn't need it either. Still enjoyed it, but it felt like there was a lot of cut content. And turns out, there was.

I was excited for Fuel, but it's 5,560 square miles (advertised as 14,400 km2) was so empty.

It's too bad. They should have concentrated on a game world 5 to 10 times smaller and put in more places worth seeing/exploring, even though it's primary game play component was racing.

What might be surprising to some people, the game was developed by Asobo Studio, a French developer, who's latest title is Microsoft Flight Simulator, so I guess their open world tech used in Fuel has been expanded upon.
What I hated the most in Fuel was the day night cycle, it was wayyyy too short.
I don't understand games that do this, you have a huge world, you're supposed to enjoy and appreciate the scenery, but you just can't because the time of day is way too fast. Because of this it felt like it was always night time and it was annoying.
I don't know how long it was but I swear it feels like a whole 24 hours in the game was like 10 min max, you could see the sun and the shadows moving in fast forward.

I don't like farcry open worlds from 3 on.. 4 especially looks like a fascinating mountain region, but is annoyingly uninteractive and shallow.. maybe it suffered from my playing it after Witcher 3, but yeah didn't enjoy that open world.

It pains me to say it but some of the zones in vanilla wow were a chore.. i liked azshara but badlands, blasted lands, ferelas for alliance and silithus come to mind as painful examples

This fills me with so much dread. Aside from Assassin's Creed a lot of open world games do this and it really discourages exploration. It's even worse when the quality of that content is not up to par. BOTW or Red Dead's approach to explorarion is more preferable.

I pick a reasonably modern game : RAGE 2.

Like take a great game like Mad Max, then tell the studio
"can you make a budget style re-skin of this for us? But also remove everything that was fun, make everything remaining klunky and not fun,
and just make it shit?"

This game was shit.
And to think this was basically just supposed to be a reskin of Mad Max. All this make it shit must have been on purpose.
Suffer for our collective sins or something?
I don't know what we gamers did wrong or what sins we committed to have Rage 2 inflicted unto us, but we need to find out, so we can learn not to do it again.
