What these, I'm guessing predominantly PC gamers, don't understand is this logic that consoles are dying due to streaming also(if using this same logic) points to the death of PC gaming. Why would anyone buy a PC when they could stream off of a Fire stick? Hmmmm?

As cloud based gaming improves , it diminishes the need for any hardware (console or mobile). As much as I hate subscription models where you do not truly own your games, they will increasingly become the most viable option for anyone with a decent connection.

Sony is even shifting their focus to this reality as of late...

The same article gets written every generation. Streaming games is a trash way to play and the latency makes it unsuitable for a lot of genres especially VR which is only going to grow in popularity as the tech improves. Most people also have data caps (ATT and Comcast have them nationwide) so that alone kills this idea for people who game regularly.

I love the "We get these articles every generation and it's never true" responses.

We got these articles one other time. It's obviously going to come true sooner or later.

Putting aside the Sony/Microsoft stuff that has sadly just derailed any point.

It’s possible. For all console makers. Who knows what the tech landscape will look like in 8 years when the PS5 and Series X are sunsetting. That’s a very long time in this sector. Today’s niche stuff like streaming, could be, and likely will be, far more approachable.

'Deep pocketed rivals' ..... these people are living back in the mid 2000's.

They speak as if Sony is still broke and subsisting on small incomes from one or two divisions.

The company is stockpiling cash at a massive rate, they increased their cash by over 60% last quarter alone. Over 40 Billion in Cash on hand but unlike many of their rivals, they have very low debt too and could borrow huge sums if they want.... add to that stock options and they could buy almost any company under 100 billion in value.

I actually believe they are saving for a major acquisition right now but I don't know if it's a gaming, film or music one.

The only thing I am worried about is Sony's approach to Japan, the censorship and not investing in enough games from Japan and Asia in general.
Censorship must stop if they are to be seen as a creative friendly company.

If Microsoft exits the traditional console market, I guarantee you a LOT of ppl will be first in line to say 'good riddance!'

If ALL the current makers exit, SOMEBODY will step in to fill the void. Guaranteed.

There will always be demand for traditional single player gaming, this will never ever change.

What a joke op, its not about the quantity of games but the quality of games. I would rather have 3 great games year then 10 shit ones, ms have a long way to go, plus i have no interest in streaming crap.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
If anything it will follow the trajectory of PC gaming:

Disc drive to no disc drive. Streaming isnt killing off the PC hardware market.

Consoles will go all digital first before being killed by streaming.

No but streaming will probably kill off many dedicated gaming PCs. That's assuming this article is right and it takes off super quickly.

Maybe. Not in 5 or 10 years.

And streaming games will NEVER be equivalent to playing directly off the hardware.

People spends hundreds or thousands to upgrade monitors or televisions to shave fractions of milliseconds off input lag. Streaming games for casual play isn't for most serious gamers. That will still be true even if streaming quality doubles in the next 7-10 years.

Pretty sure they said that about PS4 And Xbox 1.

As long as there are PC’s and not everything is streamed there will be consoles.
Plus there internet is not great everywhere. Theres not enough speed for me and my brother to stream at home, 4k etc.

Nintendo and Playstation will be around for awhile

As of right now the public response point overwhelmingly to 'YES'. As I mentioned in the other thread the problem with Cloud Infrastructure is the fact that no.1 market - the US - has terrible Internet coverage with data caps. You cannot have any meaningful cloud implementation with that.

Exactly this point. I don't understand when I see people, and companies, froth at the mouth with cloud based GaaS. How in the hell do they think anyone is going to go for this given datacaps and current speeds? I mean when you really think about it, a serious game would be spending like.. what? 25$ a month minimum for the service (and prob more to 'buy games' in the cloud?).

They could very well end up spending $100 USD a month for these kinds of services. And that's not including the internet bill (which which would include overages due to data caps).

Compare this to a console:

$500 initial investment. you buy a game, its yours. And if you want to you can subscribe to something like PSN, but that isn't a 'must'. The only way you'd go over your data cap at this point is if you're downloading tons of games and/or doing lots of streaming/videos/misc downloads on your other devices and have a small cap. further, your gaming experience is not based on your ability to stream large content without interruption. You have the game locally either on a disc or on the hard drive and simply play it, since all of the computing power is local.

And of course, nothing you 'buy' on the cloud is ever yours. This holds true to digital storefronts in general though, but at least with the likes of Steam, Playstation or Xbox, you can download them and/or still buy titles on discs. You have options

I will never be a 'cloud gamer', it's a stupid value proposition as a consumer & gamer.

It's not stupid, but it's a very niche proposition and as always in tech the larger your market the better you can scale. I can see Cloud working for a very specific customer:

1. Has high-speed internet with no data caps
2. Consumes video games like entertainment and is not bothered with 'owning things'
3. Plays very few games per year, and mostly knows exactly what he wants to play in a given year

The above makes the market very small. I could have imagined getting Stadia for Cyberpunk 2077 - my investment would have been the cost of the game (if I lucked out and got the Founder's Edition for free due to my YT Premium sub), and that's it. But I also want to experience new things from time to time and all the future Microsoft Studios exclusives appeal to me, so I went with XSX and Cyberpunk 2077.

Too many people are responding to this prediction using todays metrics.

Who's old enough to remember the 'excitement' of waiting all afternoon for the low res Phantom Menace teaser trailer to play through Quicktime back in 1999... and now we can watch The Mandalorian instantly in 4K.

Game streaming isn't brilliant today but 7 or 8 years is a long time in tech.

Interesting article.

Sony may win the console battle with Microsoft but it may very well lose the war. Even Microsoft seems to acknowledge they are looking to compete with Google and Amazon and Sony isn't even their concern anymore.

Microsoft has the infrastructure and know how to potentially dominate Sony over Cloud gaming. I like being able to stream games myself. Will PlayStation exclusives be enough?

https://www.ccn.com/the-ps5-could-be-sonys-last-gaming-console-ever/

They said this same thing back in 2012. That the PS4 would be the last console ever and that the PS4\XBO generation wouldn't even sell that well. BACK THEN, it was due to mobile gaming. They said gaming on the go on your smart phone was getting so popular and cheap, that people wouldn't even want a PS4 or XBO. LOL @ them!

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Microsoft’s last console. The numbers aren’t that of Sony. They’re obviously going all out this time, but what if they fail to exceed (or even end with less than) this last gen?

Ps5 huge success is making people uncomfortable and panick is arriving now. Seeing the next 8 years of Sony completelly decimating and breaks Stock Records must be tough for so many journalist who predicted their downfall in 2011.

Yeah we just had a generation with combined total more than 150m ( not even accounting Switch sales) sold shows it is getting irrelevant.

And not to mention how nobody can buy the next gen console because of its insane demand shows it is so irrelevant.

Cloud gaming will take decades. People living in big cities think it's around the corner. Try going out once in a while and access internet around even in developed countries let alone developing ones.
Yeah, it would help a lot if people did step out of their bubble.

People are stupid and buy wherever is pushed on them by corporations that means nothing sales has nothing to do with my point

They are irrelevant in terms of the necessity for gaming you don't need a console anymore to play games they are a choice now choices are good

Cloud gaming is five years from being perfected it will be the norm
In the near future people are either going to be mega wealthy or dirt poor the people who can't get good internet will also be irrelevant
It's not as widely accessible as you think it is. lol

Gamers are not eager for a lesser gaming experience. Corporations are eager to change expectations through marketing and influencers to make you accept less for more/same. While Corps and their media slaves have a say, as consumers, and hardcore gamers you all ultimately decide a lot by choosing which company/business model to support. Just make the "right" choice.
Corporations are run by people/made up of people. It's so easy to forget that. He is right though, based on the responses in this thread, some people seem very eager to jump into streaming. Don't get me wrong, what streaming promises us is convenience and when it is globally ready, it will sway more people over to its side. That will happen as long as people running these corproations keep investing money into it. But like everything it will come at a cost and that could be ownership rights. I know we don't own the license to something when we buy, we are buying the right to play it, but we've got more control of a physical version of something and streaming just distances us from that even more.

This again? Since PS3 its the same story after a new lauch...

"This will be the last console" should be next to "Nintendo is doomed"...

Pure clickbait articles.....

These kind of articles are right, they just always get the timeframe wrong.
I mean it was BEFORE the PS3/360 generation where we got the very first murmours of the 'next gen' consoles possibly not having a disk drive, it didnt happen. Those articles then ramped up considerable before the PS4/XB1 gen, yet they still launched with a drrive. Now we have the latest generation and the 2 main consoles still have a drive.
Sure we wont be playing on a console 30 years from now, i think everyone realizes that, but i expect one more generation after current gen. Remember we are talking 15 or 16 years from now with that, and i would expect at least one of Microsoft and Sony to go full streaming with 'Playstation 7', or 'Xbox 6'.

Its going to happen, there is nothing to avoid it, its just going to happen later than all thse 'experts' and 'analysts' think.

I predicted that at the end of the day, Google will purchase the PlayStation brand. I still stand behind that. But for the time being, cloud gaming is in it's infancy.

Stadia is the best as far as performance/graphics goes. Xbox Game Streaming has the best catalogue. If Xbox Game Streaming gets up to Stadia standards, it's very compelling. My main issue is that Internet outside of my home isn't that reliable for this purpose. I don't even trust the Wifi in a Starbucks for cloud gaming. One resort I went to in Myrtle Beach, SC had shitty Wifi performance to the point where I couldn't even stream YouTube during peak hours. YouTube literally wouldn't work. I've never seen anything like that. On the other hand, the resort half a mile down the street was perfect.

Internet in the U.S. is just too unreliable. My use case for cloud gaming is being on vacation and wanting to get a few hours of gaming in on hotel WIFI. It's sad that I have to say this in the U.S. in a major metropolitan area. Hotels still think it's more important to have "free HBO" than fast, reliable Wifi. No one cares about cable anymore.

Until this is resolved, cloud gaming is niche and Sony has nothing to worry about and can simply dabble in it like they dabble in VR. When cloud gaming does pop off, Sony's definitely screwed. But I'm thinking this may be after the PS6 than this generation.

Nah!

Nintendo will buy Sony, and put all their characters into Smash Bros.

Microsoft will buy Stadia, realise it's a actually a bit rubbish and bin it off.

Tencent will buy everyone else, embed mandatory spy cameras and microphones into everything at the demands of the CCP, and watch everyone gaming in their underwear :)

America still have data caps? How come no company has counter offered that measure and stole all the clients already? In Spain never had those and we are way poorer than the states.

Ownership of the infrastructure makes it very costly / difficult to expand. In the US 3 providers work in mostly oligopolistic manner. I remember in Poland in the late 1990s the government ordered the public telecom company, who owned all the cables, to make them available to other providers.

Cloud gaming is nothing but extra AWS capacity trying to find a new customer base, so it's tough to take it seriously. That line of MS trying to compete with Google and Amazon instead of Sony doesn't make sense since

a) Google's and Amazon's entry into the cloud market already flopped, a notoriously conservative market, but most importantly

b) MS can barely compete with Sony as it is, being outsold more than 2:1 last generation and that's being conservative.

These tech writers always try to find some new angle to talk about to get paid, but many times don't really regard market realities that prevent it from making it happen.

Nailed it.

Until every home in the US has Google Fiber internet at public utility costs; consoles will do just fine.

I also think it makes their job harder since it's less of a rat race (to see who will sell more) and becoming boring "content wise" for them.

By that time I wonder how much Gigabit internet will be worldwide and will data caps still exist.
