RTTP: Final Fantasy X

I’m replaying X atm (ps4 HD version) and I wanted to make a RTTP where I update as I progress through the game, and just generally discuss it as well. I don’t want to use a guide or look anything up, but feel free to let me know if things I should or shouldn’t do, missable items, etc. I just hate following a guide to the letter. i feel it is too distracting from the experience and I want to experience the game the same way I did as a teenager.

So, initial thoughts... DAMN this game looks great! Some of the charm of the non HD graphics is lost, but I’m not picky about graphics, and in general it looks great (Tidus face isn’t as weird if you’re not doing a side by side comparison, but I have seen that pic and... yeah he derpy looking if you compare them lol).

the arranged music is great! I toggled back and forth, thinking I would just want to stick with the original, but I think the new arrangements sound spot on and great quality. I’ll still toggle back and forth in each new area just to hear the difference.

Found some pretty well hidden chests so far, but nothing too hidden, and that’s ok. FFIX hid things all over, and in weird hard to find spots. I’m going to miss running around each area, getting excited whenever I see that little exclamation over his head. However the chest I’ve found so far were hidden enough for me. This is something of a big complaint for me with recent FF’s. It like they stopped trying to hide them at all and that’s one of my fav things about FF 😞

Another big complaint (possibly my biggest) with recent FF’s... I’m already noticing how much more linear X is compared to previous installments. Linearity in recent FF’s has been one of my biggest complaints, and it started here with X, unfortunately. I still think it’s a good game, and if your going to so linear, take notes from FFX bc they managed to still do it well. But yeah, not a fan of the linearity so far, hopefully I can just ignore it and enjoy the game.

Battle feels quick and smooth! I actually love not have the ATB bar so far. That’s a big improvement imo. It actually feels fluid and fun, I love it. I still love the old system, don’t get me wrong (and probably still prefer it), but this is feeling like a nice change of pace so far.

That’s all I got so far. I’ve just made it past the part where you make a fire and get captured by the Al Bhed members, and now I’m just doing a little sphere collecting, grenade stealing and AP grinding in the water off the boat (haven’t dived down yet. I just want to get a feel for the game).

I’ll update every few days or so. Don’t give too much away, but if there is anything mega important I should do early in game, let me know. Thanks!

Nice OP. Have you played FF X before or is this your first ever playthrough? I’d tailor my recommendations differently depending on your answer.

I played FF X for the first time a couple months ago. Coming from the later FF’s you could see the bridge in X between the old PS1 games and what we have today. The most jarring to me was not being able to control the camera in a 3D space.

As a general recommendation I would advise against grinding. I just never felt it necessary during the main story (postgame of course requiring an insane amount).

You gonna play Kimahri? I always skip using him.

Stone Breath is used for some mandatory encounters in certain challenge runs. But otherwise never found him useful. People use him as an early thief since you don't get Rikku for a while, but I'm like whats the point the game is already easy enough.

Don’t give too much away, but if there is anything mega important I should do early in game, let me know.

On Besaid Island, which is the very next area, you can get a more powerful overdrive for your first Aeon. After you meet Yuna and co., but before leaving the island, just explore, talk to the NPCs, and you'll eventually find it. It might not be where you expect but I think you will find it. Its not totally skippable, but obviously you can't return to Besaid for a long time...

I beat it when it came out and a couple more times through out the years. Feel free to let rip with tips, I just like discovering things for myself so I’m not using a guide. Thanks!

And yes agreed on X being the bridge. It’s not all bad though, there are some things I enjoy about it changing things up. I just wish it would’ve been less linear, and I still am not a fan of the voice acting. I’d rather use my imagination like you have to do when reading a book. But, meh, no biggie (well kind of a biggie, but I don’t feel like going into it right now lol)

And I actually love grinding! It’s enjoyable for me even if stats are going up minimally. I like trying out all my different moves and skills, seeing what works, what doesn’t, and watching my stats slowly level up. Maybe I’m weird for that, but I always stop to grind for an hour or so before moving on to each new chapter of the game. I’ll keep that in mind tho, thanks for the tip!

It’s been so long since I played X, I remember liking Kinahri bc he looked cool lol. But thanks I’ll keep that in mind! I’m kind of neurotic about leveling up everyone, I feel bad for characters that are under leveled. But I know from past FFs that could be a mistake/waste of time. I’ll keep it in mind 👍

oh and thanks for the overdrive for aeon tip! Now I know it’s here but still have to find it myself. That’s perfect!

Yeah me too. But if I'm not mistaken you have to use him in the mountains. So I always have to play catch up with him.

I'm about to blow your mind and I apologize. That boss fight in the mountain actually scales to Kimahri's level LOL. You can see one of their formulas here: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Yenke_Ronso_(boss)

So you can never bother using him and just use that boss as an opportunity to Lancet abilities you never bothered getting. Not that you'll use Kimahri if you were ignoring him up to that point, but its always satisfying seeing that Overdrive bar instantly fill up.

10 is a great game and the HD remaster is incredible (also includes additional content over the original base game). I hated the linear hallways in 13, but I'm not bothered by them in 10 because the experience is so guided and the zones in Spira feel seamless and connected. The battle system is arguably the best in the franchise, the music is amazing, the story is OK (it was awesome as a kid but when you pick it apart using older eyes it doesn't seem as good), Blitzball sucks, and the cloister of trials is easily the worst part of the game. I know you said you didn't want to use a guide but I highly suggest using a guide just for the cloisters. If you don't collect all the secret treasure chests in each of the cloisters you lose out on an awesome summon.

Absolutely, the CTB battle system was the best ever used in any FF title - Toshirō Tsuchida's magnum opus. As for the story, yes, it does have its holes (or black holes, haha), but insofar as setting and vibe go, Spira is probably one of the most climatic, fascinating worlds ever shown by the franchise.

I've posted this on another FFX thread last year, but man, who didn't get goosebumps watching this in 2001?

I have to say though, the models Virtuos came up with for the remaster are incredibly fucking ugly:

That summon is actually not missable. Its just harder to get those treasures later on since they're guarded by post-game superbosses. Sorry, this thread has me all like

Yep, it’s because of this that it works... and correct me if I’m wrong but you can revisit anywhere in the world late game, no? However, I remember not actually being able to fly around in the overworld... or was that x-2? But yeah everything being connected made then linearity ok... but I still am not a big fan. I felt the same about vii remakes linearity.
Blitzball sucks
I actually love blitzball 😂😬 it’s one of my favorite parts of the game.

Ah, I suspected as much in my only completed run of FFX. Virtually never used Kimahri, yet that battle wasn’t hard at all *phew*

you get an airship but since there's no "overworld map" you just choose the location you want to go to. it's been a couple years since I got to the late game of FFX and I mix it up with my memories of X-2 sometimes though. I play this on my Vita somewhat often and I'm at the Via Purifico on my run right now.

I played a bit the PS3 remaster a year ago but i haven't played it seriously since 2004. But it's the only Final Fantasy i've beat 3 times with two of them having done everything in the game. If you get stuck somewhere i might be able to help if i still remember it. :)

Recently i was considering buying the PS4 version to give it another go especially since i decided to not move to current gen for at least another year.

As someone who's played this game a bunch, my biggest tip would be this...

People sometimes suggest to have every character get a move in for every battle to make sure they all get XP, but that's overkill. In each battle I would suggest to simply get a move in from different characters until the enemy dies. If you have 7 characters and it will take 5 moves to kill all the enemies, then I would just make sure to use 5 different characters (instead of just having Auron kill everything for example, or on the flip side making sure every character gets involved). That way you're not stretching out the battles unnecessarily, but are still using different characters to spread out that XP. And I've found that when doing this, you'll never need to grind throughout the main story while also not having to stretch out every battle.

yea this, plus you can get xp later in the game easily if you want to play catch up. the only time i bring in everyone and make sure they get a turn is during boss battles

Im not paying monthly for a game I don't have a ton of time to play.

there's a free trial which gets you the full game plus the first expansion for free without having to pay a monthly fee. if you want to go beyond that, then you need to pay. but the entire base game + an expansion is a ton of content for free

Man, this is making me want to buy and play through X and the highly underrated X-2 again. The overall tone and feeling that the game gives you through Yuna, especially in X-2, is of melancholy yet, there is an inspiration of hope in her words, actions and feelings that is presented through the story, her interactions with the other characters and the amazing soundtrack that nails the game.

it's pretty cheap, too. between $25-30 new (for x and x-2) depending on what console you want to play it on.

I’m loving the unique and weirdly relaxing tone of FFX right now. It’s a great change of pace from all the AAA in your face loud music stuff I see a lot these days. Not that there is anything wrong with all that, I’m just more into this old stuff. The music and vibe of the beach, that swimming part and the first town you go to is so chill and fun. The nostalgia is getting me good too. It’s been long enough and the graphics/music are updated enough that it feels fresh but familiar.

I got 7, 8, 9, 10 and 10-2 on sale on ps4 while back. I wanna say I spent less than $50 on all of them but I can’t remember exactly. I started with IX bc I only beat that once as a kid. I’m gonna go back and hit up 7 and 8 after I finish 10. I’m really looking forward to the updated graphics and everything.

I specifically remember the first time I saw this cutscene. Think I was 13 or 14 when this came out. Me and my friend watched in, partially cringing at how bad the scene was (yes I know it’s supposed to be stupid, but even that was done horribly) and we both just looked at each other and my friend says “what a faggot” 😂

I don’t think an hd remake can fix that

Ok due to this thread (and another recent one) i got so excited to replay it so i just downloaded the PS4 version which is currently on sale.I usually don't like to buy digital versions of games that i love but i have the original PS2 of course and also the PS3 collector's edition (which i only played for a few hours) but i know that the PS4 version is the definitive version so i decided to give it a go now that i'm really in the mood to replay it.
I'll try to do a complete run and go for platinum.I don't usually care for trophies but this is one game that means a lot to me so i would like to go for platinum.🙂

Decided to start 2021 digging out the PS2 to enjoy this baby once again:

ffx-int.jpg

I have the HD versions I love everything about them except the fact that the models look horrible. Can't get over that fact.

Besaid Island is a damn good place to start 2021 in:

This game came out 20 years ago (July 2001). Crazy to remember how different the industry was back then.

Fuck, I am old.

I think some models looked ok or even better than the original but others definitely got worse (like Tidus and Yuna). But eh i don't mind so much.

I guess Lulu and Wakka are fine, so is Kimahri.

But this... what is this!?!

(Top image is PS2, running at high-res on an emulator)

Sorry, can someone just explain to me what the acronym RTTP means?

I understand what LTTP (Late To The Party?) is, but never understood what RTTP meant.

Thanks in advance for anyone who explains!

UPDATE

So these are quick notes I make as I play through the game. I don’t really proof read this or clean it up lol sorry, I’m lazy. I like to just copy and paste it so it’s my raw, first reaction. As such, a lot of this is negative and nitpicking😂 don’t get me wrong though I’m loving the game, I guess I just tend to gripe more than I do praise. Maybe that says a lot about me 🤔

But yeah it’s fucking great so far. Glad i decided to pick this up!

-Stealing actually works!
-Tidus just punches machinery when you examine? Lol just thought it was funny
-Overdrives are fun! Like little mini games
-Weird that it says I’m earning 0 AP in battles, but I clearly am when I check my stats ??? This maybe because the counter ticks down so fast. Either way that’s kind of irritating.
-voice acting is cool and all, but I still prefer text. This is something I came to terms with recently. I prefer to use my imagination for their voices and use the character model movements as cues for there tone/inflection. Just a me thing...
-Tidus is annoying and dresses like an asshole 😂
-the padding in dialogue exchanges is insufferable. A lot of unnecessary grunts, moans, “uhs” and “huhs?”, I know it’s a jrpg thing but I’m not a fan and it’s another reason I wish it was text only
-the character movement is annoying (in conversation), but again that’s just a jrpg thing I suppose...
-just discovered that exhausting conversations can lead to items... not sure how I feel about it
-for some reason, I love wakka
-not sure how I feel about mini map. Should I turn it off?
-swimming with wakka in the water area: peaceful and music is really nice. Loving the vibe
-the whole cutscene -> run for 10 seconds -> another cutscene shit is happening pretty early on. Not a fan of this kind of stuff and we see it persisting today with ffvii remake being the most recent example.
-trial was fun, but a little confusing. Maybe I was too high lol but I couldn’t figure out the glyphs and what they meant. I just kept experimenting until it opened all the doors. Wish there was a better tutorial for it
-went back and found the aeon overdrive! Thanks Sub_Level Sub_Level
-so it seems I may need to exhaust npc convo’s AND double check areas after cut scenes or sleeping possibly. Again not sure how I feel about that, I will need to play more and see if it persists through out the game
-can I mention again how great this game looks! It’s a trip seeing these places in with such crisp, shiny graphics
-are there hidden items in the world with zero indicators? Or will it always be a chest or I have to talk to a person (or animal lol)? [I found a suitcase with something in it on the boat, so that answers that question.. and that’s great I love that!]
-are there a lot of useless and empty rooms in this game? Already noticing quite a few.
-love the camera angles, and how they move a bit too.
-I think I found all the items so far. Picked up al bhed vol 1, 2 and 3. Some other key items, some weapons and armor, and gave that merchant dude (?) 500 Gil. I remember that being helpful later on or something.
-yuna and Tidus laughing on the boat scene was weird af lol.
-the cut scenes and battle following retarded laughing scene was great. This game is something else. It has a whole different feel to it, I’m really enjoying it so far.
-the scene with yuna doing the prayer on the water was awesome. Forgot how much I enjoy that cutscene. These artists really achieved something special with some of these cut scenes.

That’s it for today. I promise I won’t be so negative in the future. Those are some of my normal complaints w every FF post FFIX. I’ll keep dropping the update dumps as I play. This is weirdly enjoyable for me. Feel free to comment, correct, explain or otherwise discuss wherever you want. Looking forward to the next town/chapter!

I always loved it, but never had the opportunity to finish it. I have the ps3 version (and a deep regret of selling my international ver. for the ps2). Later in the weekend I will boot it again and see where I stopped playing. All I can remember is that I was stuck in a boss that I couldn't pass tru, not too late in the game. Will report here (taking advantage of Kev Kev Kev Kev thread, sorry) and see if someone can help me. But I can tell you thay I'm very happy with posts saying that grinding isn't really needed to finish the main story. I know it's kind of counterproductive when talking about jrpgs, but I hate grinding and haven't did it so much in the playthrough.

-For me Tidus has one of the best character progression in the entire series.
-I love the NPC dialogues not only because they often gave you items but they always reflect what is currently happening in Spira. I remember i loved going back to previous places i had visited just to see what the NPCs there had to say after major events.
-I'd suggest for the later Trials to use a guide. They are still perfectly doable on your own but they can get annoying and if i remember correctly you can find some very special items in hidden chests.
-Yes there are. Be sure to click on anything that catches your eye or when your character looks behind stuff.
