Retroarch on Series X and S |OT| Too many games

ok so if some games have 1 or 2 bin files they seem to run fine...i have tomb raider 3 which has one bin file...but my tomb raider 1 and 2 have like 50 odd bin files......is that why they dont work properly just to many files???

I think that is the problem I ran into, I'm currently converting them into single bins and will report back tomorrow on what happens

you cu
This is dead on xsx already right?

you currently can't get whitelisted anymore since the guy doing those is taking a brake from that for now.

but if you are whitelisted everything still works.
in fact there's now new stuff like a native Xbox One fan port of Tomb Raider lol

I mean as in can i still add it to mine?
Yes? Why do you think you can not? I am not sure about retail version tho, someone else has to answer that. But dev mode is still available and probably going to be whole gen and beyond.

Concern Concern

You've got two options bud. Dev mode or pay a small fee to be white listed now. Think it's about $4.

I defo prefer the retail mode. Much better performance.

So there is a performance difference in dev vs retail mode?

What is the difference between the two as far as UI or anything? Like does the retail mode have a GUI that the dev mode doesn't for example?

And then is it more likely the retail mode gets banned vs dev or anything?

I'm pretty sure retail mode uses the full resources of the machine. I mainly used dev for a few days and my games ran loads better in retail. For example Mario 64 I got 1080p 60fps dev mode and 4k 60fps on retail mode.

Microsoft more likely to remove the retail download but once its downloaded it's fine. I don't believe anyone would get banned over it, either version.

Okay so don't convert them to a single bin like i did. They boot but then the music tracks are gone. Not sure how to solve this.

We really need a good guide to it all.

its odd because my toca touring cars 1 with 8 bin files works aswell as my toca 2 with 2 bin files works....ive tried 3 different tomb raider 1s and none work

Started playing Metal Gear Solid last night. ❤️

I don’t want this to ever go away, but I won’t be that lucky will I? 😕

I wonder if MS knows how appreciated this feature is. There is no negativity among those who use this. Only joy. Taking it away is like ripping an icecream from a kid lol

Uhm, I'm not sure I'm getting the conversation here. You guys have the respective .cue files, right? PS1 games should be run through those.

If you want a smaller 1 file solution convert to chd with chdman (take from latest mame release). A batch file to automate the process is here:

I went with the Gamecube Twin Snakes 😉

Don't worry about it been taken away. Once it's downloaded its downloaded.

Just got a 128gb highspeed USB to store a complete collection of legacy games. My plan is just to copy and paste/delete to get around the 16gb limit with the file explorer program.

It removed itself once for me so I had to redownload it, definitely worried it’ll go away, it’s too awesome. I made a retro group on the main UI so I flick down I have the ftp, file explorer, Retroarch a button press away.

Didn’t know there was a 16GB limit though. I run from USB, works for Amiga, NES, SNES, PS1 at least. But I know some games needs to be installed on the internal drive. I wonder if VFS support may come with a future update where it’s needed? Is it an emulator core issue or Retroarch issue?

Not sure on that one but PS2 games definitely need to be ran internally (so limited to 16gb of games installed at once). 😊

Yes and I do boot via the cue files, these games work on epsxe on my shield and pc. Won't boot them on the pcsx rearmed core though

Got a series x for christmas maybe it will be slightly less buggy. I however don't feel like fooling with it right now as I got plenty of other toys to mess with.

Appreciate the advice on converting to chd for file reduction though, are there any drawbacks?

Oh man that needs to be fixed, it’s like 4 games 😕

Oh well I’m running a ton of my old Amiga stuff from USB at least, all i all it works reasonably well - mouse cursor is mapped to the analog sticks, mouse buttons are on the triggers, joystick on dpad, then an on-screen keyboard with ”select” button. Some games aren’t working though, Turrican gets stuck after ”Welcome to Turrican”. Jumping on dpad-up is not ideal though so maybe it wasn’t a big loss, would’ve been fun to replay though, one of my fav games from that era.

None, really. It compresses really well (On average half's the size of your PS1 library) and there's no noticeable performance difference. It's archive quality as well, so can be reversed anytime.

Here's a good document for every system

I wouldnt mind getting Retroarch on my One S

I wonder what that would involve
It’s the same process - easy way is to download the dev mode activate app from the store, follow the instructions and pay about $15, and push Retroarch to the console in dev mode from your PC - or you can use the hard/shady/awesome way and check if it’s still possible to sneak through the walls and get access to the retail mode version of Retroarch.

I’ve honestly had more people talk to me about Retroarch on Xbox Series X than any other thing the new Xbox can do, MS should just release the shackles and let this thing flow freely and get a snowball of positive PR build up.

Does anyone know if Wave Race 64 works on this? Also the video footage from Virtua Fighter 4, is that the PS2 version or Arcade?

I’m not a huge Retroarch fan, but I was super excited to see PPSSPP available since that’s really what I use. This way I can still play my copies of Outrun and Crisis Core on a much nicer screen. I do have a couple of RPGs that also look amazing, but most of my PSP games that I love are also rereleased on PS4.

How can you not be a retroarch fan? I don’t understand. It’s a standardised interface and setup/format/config for emulators. It’s amazing.

Depends on your sensibilities regarding UI, and sometimes (And vice-versa) the standalone is just better.

Also the current owner of libretro\retroarch is arguably kind of a dick, regularly pissing off emu authors. Recently for exsmple he had an argument with endrift (mgba) and proceeded to ban him from the mgba libretro reprository.

Yes, he banned the original developer from the retroarch port of his own emulator.

Haven’t had any interactions with him myself, so can’t really confirm anything about his charachter, but yeah.

Be awesome if we could get uwp ports of most of these emulators

Does anybody know why Retroarch was removed from the store?

Previously I think emulation had a bad rep because getting access to emulators often meant getting access to retail game piracy as well. But here we’re looking at a scenario where Retroarch can be installed without hacking the console and without opening the door to piracy.

Is it still frowned upon at Microsoft?
I wonder what Phil Spencer would say about it if somebody showed it to him or let him try it. He’s an old school gamer himself, he can’t possibly hate this.

For me this is the best thing about the new console.

If I am Square-Enix and i wanted to remaster Xenogears for PS4 and Xbox One and the Xbox platform provides that easy of access to a platform of emulation, suddenly my number crunching tells me this Xenogears remaster is gonna sell a lot less on the One because while it don't provide easy access to roms, just having that app on the store encourages people to go seek em out.

It's just a bad outlook for publisher relations, this is a way to nip it in the bud before it causes any issues.

Remasters sell because they’re remastered, I don’t see the original versions hurt the remaster sales. I’d say they’re more likely boosting the sales because old people like myself are talking about these old games and younger people can learn about their existence. It’s free marketing as I see it.

To be fair I think the people skilled enough to get it all working, along with the inclination to do so, is about 1% if that of any HD remaster/port.i dount any publisher takes it too seriously, and many probably happy to turn a blind eye.

Typically remasters like what i describe make the game worse. Literally was playing FF7 PS1 on the Xbox One the other day even though I could just buy the modern port, looked great.

For the record I don't actually think it matters myself, I was just speaking about how a business would look at it. It's a sensible move from Microsoft.

I hate it too lol.

Like Hostile_18 Hostile_18 said above it’s just a small minority that bother using this anyway.
I really think it’s mostly positive PR, both for the original games devs, the app dev, and Microsoft.

I agree wholeheartedly, just saying the likes of Andrew Wilson and Bobby Kotick are unlikely to see it that way

It enables piracy, that’s why it’s not allowed on the store. Pretty simple. Got a illegal rip of a game? Retroarch plays it. People start putting game dvr clips of Mario 64 up on Xbox and it pisses off nintendo, who do you think they go after? Microsoft.

I don’t think Nintendo is checking what people record on Xbox.
Microsoft might be cautiously watching how things are evolving though so it doesn’t open the door for retail XSX piracy. But for the most part I think this is free, and positive, PR. It’s like when Retropie came to Raspberry Pi. Comes with some gray area scenarios but in the end it’s still positive PR for the product and games.

Played some more last night, got Dreamcast working, locked 60fps. I’m impressed!

I played some more PS1 too, haven’t played Driver and Vagrant Story in more than 20 years.

Driver has aged badly, very low fps. Unless it was placebo I managed to get it up to 30 though by setting the CPU speed to 150%.
Would be cool with a proper big budget remake of this game on modern systems. Not sure where the original devs are now though.

Vagrant Story is a weird game, super stylished and plays great but Square Enix hasn’t touched the IP once since it released. Personally I’d rather see a new Vagrant Story than yet another Final Fantasy.
AwMW6dP.jpg

And to this day I still think The Last Ninja on C64 is a great game, at the time it was so far ahead of everything else on so many aspects in my opinion, one of my fav games from that era including the sequel.

Reflections is owned by Ubisoft now and does mostly work on Watch Dogs lately. they are usually supporting other developers with big AAA games.

and they did "Grow Home" and "Grow Up"

Driver San Francisco was pretty great and somewhat overlooked. it was their last really big solo project.

60fps, classic driver style missions with a twist and no on the foot nonsense.

it also has a really cool easteregg, if you drive a Delorean and go 88MPH you will go back to the past and have to replay the tutorial mission of Driver 1 lol
