Suikoden successor Eiyuden Chronicle was top video games Kickstarter of 2020

Rabbit & Bear Studios' JRPG doubled the money raised by Platinum Games' The Wonderful 101: Remastered

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was this year's most successful Kickstarter campaign for a video game.

That's according to research by Polygon, which ranked the site's biggest video game crowdfunding campaigns of the last 12 months.

Rabbit & Bear Studios' Eiyuden Chronicle sits firmly at the top with over ¥481 million (around $4.6 million) raised from over 46,000 backers.

When the campaign finished, it was the third-highest total for a video game project in Kickstarter history and broke the record for most money raised by a Japanese Kickstarter campaign.

It also more than doubled the funds raised by the next biggest project of 2020, which was Platinum Games' The Wonderful 101: Remastered at ¥235.3 million ($2.3 million) from 33,000 backers.

In third was Owlcat Games' RPG Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, with 2,000 more backers but a total of just over $2 million.

The top ten games campaigns on Kickstarter raised more than $12.5 million.

By comparison, the highest earning individual campaign for a tabletop game was dungeon-crawler Frosthaven at $12.9 million.

Love Suikoden, will definitely pick this up once it releases. I can't remember but did they manage to get Miki Higashino back for the music? That would be amazing if they did.

What I don't get is: clearly, as this kickstarter proves, there is money to be made on Suikoden (my favourite rpg franchise btw). If Konami doesnt give a shit about it (and they are stupid for that but too bad for them) why dont they sell the licence to someone else that could make the franchise justice and good yen at the same time? Do the shareholders of Konami just enjoy losing money?

Why would they sell it, selling it means you give up any future ability to make a game, whereas just keeping the license until and if you are ready to use it is basically free.

They could do a lot of things to monetise it I think, like for example rent it in exchange for a fee for a certain number of years, or sell it but have an option to buy it back at certain conditions, etc.

It's not free as not making profit on some capital you employ (the IP) is not much better than losing money

But then their IP is in someone else’s control, what if they fuck it up, etc. lots of reasons not to.

the amount of times this sort of thing has happened in gaming is really small and mainly related to companies on deaths door, like Interplay selling Fallout to Bethesda or the THQ auction.

ultimately this Kickstarter did well but $4.5 million is not that much money, might not even be enough for a company of Konami size to even notice. I mean look at what a damn board game did.

I agree but I think companies like Konami, which dont give a shit about video games anymore, should consider it. If it hasnt been done in the past, they just need to have some lawyers and bankers think of a smart way of doing it. Anything can be done

Konami still makes videogames (they might not be good or the ones people here want, but they do make them), and they can again in the future.

I went in on $500 for this, most I've ever paid for anything video game related outside an actual console. But it's a successor to the greatest JRPG series ever so I'm ok with it.

Great job by R&B on the campaign!

Nice. I didn't back it because I don't really do Kickstarter and it got funded almost instantly, but if it's as good as it looks I'll definitely be buying when it is out.
I think what also really helped them was having some early gameplay to show. Always inspires more confidence than only concept art or "here's a pic of how we hope it will look ingame"

I dropped $40 on this back in August for a digital copy.
Suikoden's not a favorite franchise but I appreciate the spice it brings to the genre and at its best (which it unfortunately is often not) it's very compelling writing.

Love to see it, Suikoden 1+2 together(I play them as if they are disc 1 and disc 2) is my favorite game of all time.

If the game is Suikoden except for the name, why do you care? Unless you want a carbon copy of the old game, that is.

I did not care that Bloodstained was not called Castlevania.

The lore, return of some characters, return of some musics, continuation of the overarching story with the regions, etc. in fact what I would enjoy the most if probably something like suikogaiden but in rpg style.
