LTTP: Tetris Effect | Have I Got A Game For You

I'd heard a lot of posts, read a lot of stories about this game, and i know exactly where they're coming from. It's a fantastic game with lots of great music (some less great) and obviously solid gameplay.

I've got a problem with it, though, and that is that i don't really enjoy tetris. I'm good enough at it and put a ton of hours into it in the deep past, but i actually prefer Lumines these days.

Lumines is a different take on Tetris released originally for PSP in the 00s, by Q Entertainment and the same guy who did Rez. In it you work with square blocks of 4, in different combinations and with different powerups, which cascade down, rather than remaining rigid like Tetris blocks. It's designed to be faster and have a lot more clearances (you clear any group of 4 same coloured blocks in a square) and i enjoy it a lot. It also pioneered this style of mixing music with this kind of gameplay to great emotional effect.

And that's funny because I think there are a lot of parallels between Tetris Effect and a Lumines. They both boast changing themes, great music which is augmented by how you play, visual payoffs and progression based on clearing lines...

In fact, I'm wondering if the same people who made Lumines are responsible for Tetris Effect, so similar are the two games. I've looked it up and that's not the case, but since Lumines came first I want to recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it.

Edit: Correction - it is done by the same dude. Which is why it's so similar. All is right in the world ~

The are two Lumines games in particular I can recommend, the original (available on ps4) and Lumines Electronic Symphony, which is on Vita (if it's on other platforms i don't know)

Don't spoil yourself too hard if you're interested in the game, but here is Electronic Symphony, you can see the parallels and gameplay which, I feel, is faster and more fun.

I like Tetris Effect, much as i would like a great expansion of sequel, but i find the core game to be outdated and a bit limited.

Lumines is a terrible puzzle game and is only enjoyable because of synesthesia.

So is Tetris Effect.

This game is the worst Tetris I’ve ever played. I’m sure it’s fantastic in VR, but I’ve played it on XBox and the “synesthesia” just doesn’t work without VR. The background imagery makes the actual game stuff practically illegible at times, and the constant (terrible) vibration of the controller is distracting at best, exhausting at worst. Turning off vibration made me play better, but also feels off because after a while I got the impression that all that audio/visual/tactile stuff’s purpose is to deliberately annoy the player, lol. It’s just a lot of noise. I kept making mistakes that I simply wouldn’t do in any other Tetris because of all the distractions.

Some extra modes are interesting (that M1 fall speed is BONKERS), but the main game’s been very meh to me.

Tetris is an infinitely better puzzle game, which was my point. Tetris 99 is the bet Tetris game in recent history.

What? The entire marketing campaign of Tetris Effect was pretty much "Tetris reimagined by the guy behind Lumines".

Mizuguchi is known for creating video games that incorporate an emphasis on interactive sound design, evidenced by Rez, Lumines, and Child of Eden.

I like this game in VR, but I also have it on Xbox because GP and its only like 4gb ish. I think its good, also without VR.

99 is probably better as a pure Tetris game. Played it at my sister in law's.

Shitty take. The core gameplay of Tetris is timeless, and this is the best version I have ever played.

This game was surreal in VR on PS4. I messed around a bit with it on Series X, but it isn't nearly as cool.

Downloaded this the other day when I found out it was produced by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, not because of Lumines but due to Child of Eden & Rez - so hopefully it's just Tetris with awesome visual/audio design. I guess I'll find out later when I finally get some downtime to game.

I played this recently for the first time, I think its fantastic. With a good set of headphones even better. I started to dream dropping tetris peices, lol.

I've been waiting two years to play this stupid game.

First it was the Epic exclusivity, no thanks. Might as well not even exist. So then I hear the game is coming to Windows Store, great, so it launches, VR isn't implemented. They claim by "the end of the year" but what are the chances of that.
