Final Fantasy X. Fuck me what a great game.

The insane convoluted story about SIN is peak FF IMO. I was completely lost yet interested the whole time.

Insane convoluted stories is why I play JRPGs.
Good god deciphering Final Fantasy type-0 was awesome. It all made sense... somehow.

FFX has the traditional mindfuck plot revelations of the FF series, but it's still pretty straightforward to understand compared to other Final Fantasy games. The whole lore about the formation of Sin, Yevon, and Zanarkand is really cool. The ending sections of the game do a good job of explaining things, but not 100% of it, which makes delving into that lore more fun. Especially since there are some NPCs around the world who give you further info, like for example the different Aeon faith and also this guy:

FFX is really campy and fun. It's not difficult at all, the music and atmosphere are great, and it has probably the best battle system out of any mainstream FF game (13 comes close). The remastered version is a godsend and is easily the best version of the game. I've played through it from start to finish a bunch of times. Even X-2's gameplay is fun, though the story is meh in comparison to X and the fan service is too over the top and uncomfortable for me

Mgs 2, devil may cry, ffx, and kingdom hearts has to be the greatest string of exclusive games ever in any platform holders history right? Throw in dark cloud and gran Turismo as well.

I'm terms of content, extra aeons to find, sphere grid, turn based combat, its great

Disclaimer: I've never played a single FF game, but watched my wife play them all, ffx was the great to watch and help out with (back in the day of gamer guides)
This thread makes me want to give it a shot. I remember renting it on the PS2 back when it was new. I've only ever finished two Final Fantasy games, VII and VIII.

Yeah, the first full year of the PS2 (2001) saw the release of Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry, and Gran Turismo 3. All as PS2 exclusives. Insane.

Completely agree; FFX is the last gripping FF game imo. Played FFVI-XV, except for the MMOs, and imo its the best overall game. The world the lore/religion of spira is so damn good, the pacing of the story is just so good. Lets not forget the god tier soundtrack; other world is metal AF!!!!!! The only down side was the lack the world map/over world; but I'm okay with it consider there was hardly any jrpg on the 6th gen that had a world map. This game remade with ffviiR type game play would be so damn incredible, that'll be my dream game.

Just need to gush about this game. I've been thinking about FFX lately, and how much of a fascinating case it is of a game that had a lot of bad characters and story elements, that were elevated so goddamn much by everything else. As annoying as Tidus comes off, and as ditzy as Yuna can be, the game still made so many people, myself included, cry at the end. The setting and music in the game is god tier. You've got your medieval, steampunk, future, and cyberpunk settings across all of fiction, but Spira is probably the most unique setting I've ever seen. It's hard to describe it, it's like an alien beachworld. Then there's the music, which I honestly think deserves to be in the Mount Olympus of greatest video game soundtracks. It's rich and diverse with so many different types of music that are catchy, emotional, relaxing, and heartpounding. The gameplay was peak Turn Based, what else is there to say? The graphics and cutscenes at the time were groundbreaking in so many ways. In terms of graphical leaps between console generations, FFX really showed the difference in power between the PS1 and PS2. Even towards the end of the PS2's run, FFX was still one of the better looking games on the console. As for the writing, for every annoying character there was, there was one that was likeable and cool. For every dumb story moment, there was one that was amazing or heartbreaking. Even almost 20 years later FFX holds up. It doesn't feel too outdated.

FFVII Remake certainly brought back some of that old school Final Fantasy magic, but for me FFX is still the last great game in the franchise. That isn't a knock on everything that came after, how good FFXIV can be. But X was the last one to blow me away and make me feel like I was a part of an amazing journey.

Final Fantasy X is the best JRPG and my favorite FF game. I started with FF7 on PSX but I've played them all.

The last actually great Final Fantasy game, before they decided to go into the online MMO market, and the single player experience really started to suffer.

Battle system is actually one of my favs (just make it so you don't have to sub in teammates to gain exp please!). Music is some of the best in the series as well.

Out of curiosity, what's your favorite?

Final Fantasy 7, 9 and 12 are my favorites. Followed by 15, 6, 13 (not the sequels) and 8. 10 is at the very bottom. Not counting 11 and 14 because I have not played them due to uninterest in MMOs. The ones before 6 are to archaic and dated for me so I haven't bothered with those either (except a couple of hours in 4).

X and VII are part of the same universe? I read somewhere awhile back that VII takes place after X, way after that kid's descendants discover how to harvest energy from the farplane and leave the planet.

5 is better than 90% of everything else in the series. Fact.

This is funny to me since my order is exactly the same as yours except I have 10 at the very top instead of the very bottom lol. I've never played 1 - 6 though.

Yeah, the connection is that the Al-Bhed whiz kid from FFX-2 (called Shinra) developed the technology to convert the planet's spirits into energy, which is what his descendants ended up using on a new planet. They called their company Shinra in honor of him, and then FF7 happened.

Since then i only liked ff7 remake better. That said, at the time i liked it a lot but i felt it was declining compared to 4~9.

The last great true Final Fantasy in my opinion. Great story, characters, world, everything. Impending doom has always been central to the series theme and this was the last one that felt that way to me. Cloud will always be the series favorite but I’ll take Tidas and this cast any day. It would be awesome if they remade this game since it’s linear design would probably be an easier and quicker development. Never played the sequels though so this ending is canon to me as it should be.

Nah. I can say that game started a spiral down of FF that persists to this day.

FXIV and FFXII notwithstanding.

I love the sense of isolation and loneliness in the story, they always treat Tidus like an outsider. I always wanted to see a prequel where you play as Jecht, Brasca, and Auron. It'd be nice to see how Jecht's character changed as he went through the pilgrimage.

wow, that's fucked up.

It’s from a comment that Kazushige Nojina made for Ultimania. It was more of a joke and not meant to be taken seriously. Fans took it to be more than that. The only thing to come out of it was an Easter egg in FF7:R, something that shouldn’t be taken seriously.

it is one of the best in the series for sure. combat is hella addicting, and the music is up there with the best. the only thing i have against this game is the dungeon puzzles, i find them very frustrating and obtuse. it's not fun. even Blitzball, it's somewhat relatable as a spectator sport.

the characters are nice and unique and memorable. the goth babe is hella hot. all the bad guys are ridiculous. all the proper Final Fantasy stuff in there in it's right place.

is it too linear? i don't think so. the series has always had linear stories. these traditional RPGs are usually about linear stories. yes there was an open world map where you could "go anywhere" but often progress was gated by features of the landscape, only one or two towns available at a time, you spending most of your time just clicking through dialog and watching scripted events. they are more like long epic novels than sandboxes.

was this the first one without a world map? i remember that being a big deal. i think it fits the game though, and it is still FF. classic game. as always, the music rules. FF is good about that =)

FFX. Just a gem of a game from an age long past. If you were born when this game came out, you recently became an adult. But I still remember like it was yesterday how much this game blew my mind and took me on an adventure in a dream like world.

I wonder if the where you from is related to FFX opinion a bit. Here in Europe we got the expert sphere grid option and the Dark Aeons. That helped making FFX very special to me.

(I do concede that the lack of world map and stupid mini games suck... except Blitzball, that's nice with manual control)

II, III and specially V also need a bit more respect I would say. Great games for their time and didn't have the luxury of being looked with nostalgia filters.

FFX is great. I played it for the first time two years ago and it felt like the last mainline FF with the "classic FF vibe", from fixed backgrounds to the battle system to the music. It's also the first not to feature an overworld map (that's not open world) and a playable airship. However I don't think this automatically makes subsequent FFs bad as the series needed to change its formula to adapt to rising development costs. Sure enough mistakes were made down the road.

I also think Junya Nakano is an underrated (I'd even say underknown) composer due to him working with giants like Uematsu and Hamauzu. He composed among other tracks the Luca theme and the Aeon battle theme.

I still like how SquareEnix used a mix of composers for different styles on FFX. Junya Nakano was my favorite SquareEnix composer. He was extremely underrated and SquareEnix should have kept him.

FFX was my first FF and I fell in love instantly. I love how dorky and fun the story and characters can be and at the same time have serious moments. I think the battles are fun witch makes grinding fun, sphere grid is complex but fun, the dialogue is great (with some funny moments), beautiful music and I get completely addicted to the game and never want it to end. It’s one of my favorite games. Hope to play it again soon :messenger_heart:

I've never been able to defeat the Sin boss fight on top of the flying ship. He always kills my team. Tried on 3 different playthroughs.
Still a great game though.

That is a hard fight, but is not THAT hard. Grind a little bit for some damage and you should have it in a few tries.

Its an absolute classic. I'm not too fond of these linear RPG games, but FFX did it perfectly. The pilgrimage theme fit in, the locations were beautiful, the OST is killer, and you can still go back and open up lots of secrets later on. The story is pretty fucking good. This is a 2001 JRPG, and while there is a certain amount of expected cringe and weird designs, I think the story does hit home. Its also quite easy to understand with not that many plot holes (not as much as VIII had, and VII even).

People who compare this to XIII are out of their mind. Even VII R is more linear than X. Good luck grabbing a missed elemental or limit break without redoing an entire chapter. X has lots of freedom, just no real time world map.

When I had the remaster on Vita I was all over the remastered OST but on the PS4 the original was also included and I think this is the better OST.
