Summary
David Jaffe did an interview with the man who created this studio.
  • The studio began working on an Uncharted TV show that was created in engine from the games. They did some tests on it and it didn't work out so they scrapped it.
  • The studio has 200 devs working on their new game.
  • At one point they also started working on remakes of God of War and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. Those didn't work out either.
  • Says he can't talk about what they're doing now. We just know it's a third person cinematic action adventure game that's based on a beloved well known Playstation IP and is "the next chapter in cinematic storytelling".
  • This new AAA team at San Diego VASG is working on an action adventure game, "while utilizing proprietary engine technology" This team was assembled to "expand upon existing franchises and craft all new stories for the next generation of gamers"

I wonder how they would approach Syphon Filter in 2020. I loved the original 2 and the PSP one was fun but I don’t think their gameplay would work nowadays.

I guess they could could follow the template of what the division or ghost recon do, as they seem the closer to what siphons filter was. Or would it be better to back off the guns blazing aspect and be more like splinter cell?

Yeah, plus Uncharted is boring now. We've had 4 feature length games and one spin off and the formula's pretty stale now. It's time to move on. Maybe in a decade it'll be nice to come back to it, but imo Uncharted is played out. I had to push myself to finish 4.
Yes and no from my perspective. The sense of adventure and story telling are the main pillar in the series. A next gen graphical splendour with top tier narrative could go down well. Perhaps an overhaul to more grounded weightier gameplay or something and it could be as fresh as the God Of War reboot. Wouldn’t say no either way, but a new IP even more so indeed.

Agreed, but the problem for me is that they've already done the most awesome set pieces imaginable, so it's kind of hard to see them topping some of them (especially the stuff from UC2, which was just amazing). As I played UC 3 and 4, I kept realizing that the sugar high I got from the set pieces was slowly fading and by the end of 4, it was gone completely. I will say I really liked the characters in Uncharted, they should have the same team create a new bunch and it'll be something pretty special I'd bet.

I'd say that beside Uncharted, there are two major PlayStation franchises that would fit that criteria: The Getaway and Siphon Filter. Both of them 3rd person action/adventure games that could be reimagined as story-heavy cinematic experiences.

It is also worth noting that, around that time and as mentioned during the video, Shawn Layden was very keen on bringing back classic PlayStation titles such as Shadow of the Colossus, the Crash Bandicoot trilogy, Medievil and Demon's Souls. It is not far fetched to think that Layden could've greenlighted a reboot of either Syphon Filter or The Getaway (a highly regarded game by him) two or three years ago.

Also, in 2018 a former The Getaway developer mentioned that he heard from his colleagues at Sony that something The Getaway-related was in the works 🤔

What Jaffe said kinda worries me. So they tried 3 other projects and they all failed, including an Uncharted and GOW remake which presumably they would have the source code to work with. Now we are to expect that their new game is going to turn out great? Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me.

Nah, there never were Uncharted or God of War remakes in the works, that's not what Michael says in the video and you can blame some jerk from the PlayStation Studios OT over at ResetEra for that terrible transcription of the interview.

The guy brought up Uncharted or God of War remakes as examples of the sort of thing they were after once Shawn Layden proposed them the idea of bringing back old stuff with shiny new graphics.

An Uncharted TV show, WTF? Sounds like a bad idea and a waste of time.

They didn't failed in making Uncharted and GOW remakes. They failed in pitching them, which means that Sony wasn't interested in making them. That's bad sign not for that studio but for whole Sony. AFAIR when Jim Ryan was rulling over European branch of PlayStation Studio, Liverpool tried to pitch multiple ideas, but they were allowed only to work on F1 games and Wipeout.

“The next chapter in cinematic storytelling.”

No guys this is good! They must mean they’ve figured out a way to tell a deep engrossing story without obtrusive overlong cutscenes or mind-numbing forced slow-walk exposition.

I think its very likely Uncharted based on what is being stated. Uncharted TV show, Uncharted remake, it wouldn't shock me if they are indeed working on some Uncharted game based this.

That being said....fanboy wish list...The Getaway 3!
