I'm seriously tired of Nintendo (rant)

This. Nintendo gets away with everything they do because their fanbase enables them.

So which Kart racer is better than Mario Kart? Which platformer is better than Mario Odyssey? Which open world adventure is better than Breath of the Wild?

And, for any you name, which one can I play on a handheld device?

It's so weird. Everyone just insists on forgetting that the Switch is a handheld.

I feel like I must live in some alternative universe, I loaded of Pokemon sword or Fire Emblem 3 houses and think its some low budget PS2 era title, the animations are just jank and robotic and the whole game just feels cheap, how do they get so much praise when they are just the exact same games?

I mean compare to Mario Odessey, Lugi's Mansion or Mario Kart 8? Why are those so slick when the more adult games feel so jank?

Why when we gave a turn based title like fire emblem do the combat animations not look like...

Nintendo just seems to cheap out recently and get away with it, just because you have a weaker console does not mean you can't produce stunning stylised visuals, its just so weird.

Why did those fucking morons at Nintendo make this fucking Gundam SD bullshit. How stupid are they?

I own a Switch and PS4, now PS5. I spend more time playing the Switch than my Sony consoles. Nintendo is great at making games catered toward pick up and play. I have a family, I’m not able to or interested in investing 100+ hours in a game. Nintendo does have some of that if you want.

Nintendo has always been about family and accessibility in gaming. I don’t think Nintendo is the problem. I think gaming tastes have changed for many of the people upset with Nintendo. However, sales show that their model still works. For those complaining about paying full price for old games, Sony would be doing it too if they could. Don’t fool yourself into thinking they are consumer friendly. No, they are a corporation and care about $$$ just like everyone else. There just isn’t enough demand to keep the items full price due to the amount of 3rd party support and the content itself.

Im not an expert in those kiddy games but I have seen people say that CTR is better than MK and I have seen a lot of people say that Astrobot (PSVR&PS5) are more enjoyable and more creative than Mario Odyssey and those games were made by a core team of 15 people and somehow have almost the same production value as a full fledged Mario 3D plattformer. That Hat kid plattformer is supposed to be quite good as well.

Im not sure what being a handheld has anything to do with my post tho.

I like Nintendo games, well, like the Wii and the 3ds, but even then, there's no denying that recently, Nintendo hasn't been the best.

All they are doing these days is releasing ports from the Wii U, mainly because they want the money, and they want their games which flopped because of the Wii U to be successful. I only know of a few Nintendo created games I have on the switch that came out this or last year that are not from a previous console.

During these last few months, Nintendo have become even worse, with all of the Splatoon and the Game Soundtrack taking down stuff. They're not even close to the Xbox One and PS4 in terms of quality, their hardware is not as powerful (because they don't really want to spend more) and as such, many popular XBO and PS4 games are not released on there. Also, they used to have free Online Multiplayer, but they had to introduce Nintendo Switch Online, which should go ASAP.

Yet, I get that they are like the only competitor in the Handheld business, meaning that they get most of the sales there, and their graphics match up to the PS Vita, but the docked bit of the console is still not like the rest of the competition.

I get it. You play grown up toys rather than kiddy ones. I guess that's braggable.

I don't understand why Nintendo's success would concern you then?

3 of 5 best selling PS4 games aren't exclusives, including the 1.
God of War sold what, 12 million until 2019. Sony was "smashing" their records, not industry records.

Sony 1st party have a very low ceiling and are most games for the moment, not a game that will be remembered (and played) years later. Because of that that their games are cheap, they don't appeal the masses, so your demand is cut short mere months after the launch.
God of War has sold 20m copies. And Playstation has a much bigger library of games so there is more competition.

And this suggestion their games 'won't be remembered and played years later, and don't appeal to the masses' is complete nonsense. You sound like a closeted fanboy who probably hasn't even played the games you're talking about.

But stay happy overpaying for underpowered hardware, and full price for three year old games 🤔.

My point was thats made by some B grade Japanese developer who are able to make SD Gundam at least look cool on the switch in turn based battles using high quality battle animations.

On the other hand Nintendo...

Oh yes 9/10 for the frame dropping, early PS3 graphics title.... The issue is the combat animations are the best part of the game, the whole school segment feels jank and looks like someone made it with store bought assets on unity. I went in for the plot but... its not anything special... Why do these games get such a free pass? Its not like there superior mechanically to Xcom or Valkyria Chronicles.

No, I have no problem with people playing kiddy or cartoony games. I play them too occasionally even if mature games are my bread and butter.
I just wanted to clarify that they are not my expertize and used other peoples opinions that played them all to answer your question.

Why are you making up that Im concerned about Nintendos success? Im just of the opinion that nintendo should try to be better in a lot of different areas.
Since we are talking about games right now, I will say that a lot of their games feel extremly low effort and low budget while never dropping in price and making nintendo 100s of millions if not billions of dollar. Pokemon is a great example and so is Mario Odyssey but in different ways.

Im fine with under powered but I thought that by combining their console and portable lines, we would get twice as many games. It seems like we arent even getting as many games as the 3DS was getting.
it's because now even on portable device , game require at least ps3/360 era level of time/people.

Have you always been this easy to feel attacked with your low effort opinion? Have thought about why people bought the game? Ever consider your opinion as pure trash - games like Odyssey and latest Pokemon as lowy effort/budget?

Show me a better monster collecting game and a platformer with the better jumping mechanics... go on. Maybe you'll pull out another anecdotes like CTR being better than Mario Kart then. .. a fucking kart game with MTX galore.

I haven't really touched my Switch much this year. It started off really strong with Zelda and Xenoblade and has been getting worse since release. They've gotten really lazy, but it is printing money still so they probably don't care.

I think it's a bit redundant of me to say this, but this is how Nintendo operates, it works for them and their revenue is enormous after releasing the switch, even with the software drought.

Why change a thing? I'd say you should probably have clued in to this, since they haven't changed how they work in a quarter of a century. :)

Following a great 2019, this year the line up has been poor, no doubt about that. There's been some Covid delays but I don't think the lineup would have good even without the lm.

Next year is looking much better already, just from a third party standpoint. Plus with the virus getting under control we should get general Directs back.

Lack of general Directs this was caused by Covid uncertainty.

In terms of leveraging their IP outside games, that's a growing area for them but I don't see it negatively impacting their gaming side.

I dont feel offended or anything. Im just trying to make you realize what you are doing right now, which is defend Nintendo from the smallest criticism.
You really want to make an argument that Pokemon ist not a low effort and low budget cashgrab?

I cant show you one because there almost no other monster collecting games. Temtem maybe but I never played it.
But thats besides the point. You are right now using a lack of competition to make a case that those games are great/ on the level they should be. Thats not how it works. You can judge a game based on its merits alone or by making a comparision and in Pokemons case the game can easily be called trash without having to point out better games. If anything the lack of competition is a major reason for their complacency.

The estimate is around 20m and as they point out the vast majority of recent sales will be the 2018 game, so unless you have data which says otherwise this is the best available evidence. Spiderman is reckoned to have sold around that much aswell. The suggestion that their games have a low ceiling and don't appeal to the masses is complete bullshit. We're talking some the best critically and user-reviewed, and highest selling games of the generation.

Yes you can't show anything because Pokemon still stands as the best in terms of monster design overall while having a simple yet complex turn based battle system at the same time. Having only 2 year period per new release, they can still consistently churn out at least decent to good ones every time, with tight schedule on merchandise and anime screenings movies or long season shows inter games. It's not a low effort on them if they still can nail the core appeal every time. Try doing it consistently for 20 years and try calling it low effort. Budgets don't matter much when the game development timeline is tight, is there any game who could churn out a full on dazzling graphics within 2 years? Go on...

Temtem design is on the deviant art trash level except for couple of them. Other veterans would just lack on other departments.

This chart is useless. People are just buying the Switch now because they all have a PS4. I got gifted a Switch literally two days ago, I didn't even want it. I sold my original smash switch, my friend gifted me the Animal Crossing switch for some reason. Most of Nintendos' games are shit. I have Smash and Pokemon Sword (Friends forcing me to play). I do not intend to purchase any other games.

The Total World Wide Sales aren't even close:
  1. PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 113,703,751
  2. Switch Total Sales: 65,713,911
  3. Xbox One Total Sales: 48,339,703

What's so weird about all you Sony Ponies that can't handle the success of the Switch, is that the machine is an absolutely perfect successor to the Vita.

All the best indies are there and run perfectly. On top of that, you get great Nintendo first party titles and then great older games, like Diablo 3 or Borderlands, which you can now play to your hearts content in handheld.

Ignore the dumb shit like Animal Crossing.

Hades, for example, is one of the games of the year. How you clowns can't release that having that in handheld is fucking awesome is beyond me.

If the Switch was branded with a Sony emblem you'd be sleeping with it under your pillow.

Well id be the first to jump on people who complain that the switch is not as powerful as the other consoles.

It's a silly argument to a point seen as it's a handheld.

But even besides the power. Let's say the Switch is around the power of the PS3.

There are very little games that look as good as PS3 games or even have as much ambition from the first party side.

I can name you super mario odyssey, Splatoon 2, Luigis mansion 3 and breath of the wild.

Taking out the ports is there really much else?

The switch isn't even taking advantage of the power it has for the most part for the first party games and that's frustrating.

It really reminds of the Wii where most of the games didn't even look like GameCube games.

The Switch is the best console for Indie games for sure.

There are TONNES of cool games to play on Switch!
For example.
"Switch hunt" Where did I last chuck it disdainfully?
"Switch dust" Challenge yourself to remove months/years of top soil.
"Switch charge" Feel the deep satisfaction of remembering to regularly charge your Switch, in a vain hope that one day you'll have a reason to turn it on.

This gen I've realized that Nintendo is just one of those popular things that isn't for me, like game streaming, or Battle Royale....or Starbucks.
Used my Switch a lot during the first year but it has mostly been gathering dust since then. The only reason I've used it every now and then in these past 2 years is because I have some friends that get a lot of Switch games and let me borrow them.

Can't really say they are doing anything wrong from a business perspective. The console is selling like crazy and their exclusives destroy Sony/MS exclusives in sales.

They do have legit gems every now and then like Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey but on a large scale most of their games don't interest me enough to pay their premium prices. The average Nintendo games falls into the "I'd try it for $20-$30" range, but they never get to that price. Paying $60 ($90 if you want DLC) for a Ps2 tier game like Pokemon is something that simply doesn't appeal to me when I can buy games that interest me just as much or more, with nicer production values and at half the price on Pc/Ps4. Fire Emblem went into a direction I don't like, I'd still give it a chance for $20 but it's never going to be that price and I'm not paying $60 for it when for the same or less I can buy Dragon Ques XI Definitive, Yakuza 7, FF7 Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh 2, YS VIII, etc, etc.

Well you would need for them to make games that target and take advantage of 4k. That would increase their development costs substantially and I think they'd rather keep making upscaled gamecube looking games.
Good point. Nintendo has never been about pushing resolution and the art styles their games typically adopt (cel-shaded, anime-style graphics) wouldn't really benefit too much from a resolution like 4K. But what about framerates? Sure, higher framerates are always good.

Unfortunately, you'll never see a hyperrealistic game like God of War or RDR2 release on the Switch because the visuals depend heavily on resolution for clarity. That's fine with me; I knew what I was getting into when I bought a Switch.

If anything, I'm a little disappointed by the lack of first-party and/or AAA releases. BotW, Mario Odyssey, and Smash were great titles. However, we've been in somewhat of a draught since those releases. It seems like Metroid Prime 4 is still a long way off and SMT V might be released by the time the Switch gets a hardware upgrade. I'm hoping that the Switch 2.0 gets an upgraded CPU so that more complex physics and AI can be implemented.

Hey, if you think Pokemon games are still this top tier games that deserve earning billions of dollar from each release thats your opinion and I dont often try to argue opinions. I for one think they are low effort and low budget games that are simply riding on the legacy of prior games that people loved. I also think that any of the big publishers could easily make a way better monster collecting game if they tried. They will not do it tho. because it would not make them much money since I doubt Pokemon fans would give those games a chance and will continue dumping money into this trash fire while defending it.

I still remember how Pokemon fans were hopeful to get a pokemon game that resembled BOTW. Good times, lol.

Just because they can doesn't mean they should.

Also it didn't work for a lot of their ports where it really didn't make sense for a full price release.
Games like the port of Bayonetta 1 and 2 which were not quite full price but high enough.

Games like Pikmin 3 a very niche series that could have used a cheaper port.

My main issue with their full price ports is almost not even the price but the lack of effort put into them.

The Switch is not a much more powerful system than the WiiU. When you bring over a new game you'd better have new content.

I would say Mario Kart 8 deluxe did a wonderful job here and Is worth the full price.
Resolution bump to 1080p
All DLC tracks
A brand new battle mode and new characters.
Slight tweak to gameplay mechanics to balance things further

After that their ports stopped trying. Donkey Kong Country added an easy mode..... That's it... for instance.

That's not good enough.

I believe Nintendo games get a free pass a lot of the time in reviews espexially when it comes to these ports. The reviewers need to be calling out this stuff but they don't. They would on with any other platform with any other publisher.

It’s nice to see some bullshit concern that is not targeting Microsoft for once, but most of that is still an exaggeration. Nintendo was not going to have the same level of output that they had in 2018 and 2019 forever, especially with COVID - that’s not how it works when you rely so much on first party content.

They had a slower year in 2020 and will have a much stronger 2021, they will keep selling like crazy and people who focus on graphics will still be unhappy.

Only point I agree with is the cheap Wii U remasters being sold at full price, it’s shitty but it’s not like they are the only ones doing so.

I get it OP. I got the Switch thinking Bayonetta 3 would release soon after. BIG mistake. It's sad that most of my favorite Switch games are ports from previous consoles. You touched upon certain points in the OP that I wholeheartedly agree with like Iwata (RIP) and the others being better, more gamer-centric faces for the company for example

You find many sources with 10m in May 2019 and just one with that 20m and like i said, i highly doubt those 20m. Would be the first game on earth that sells so well one year after the release. Guess we have to wait for official numbers, but if they really hit 20m i bet there would be an offcial statement, because it would be the best selling PS exclusive of all time.

And LOL they could always try nailing the monster design and maybe people would buy these "big publishers" games, they just can't and aren't capable of it. Look how western games style their games for example, ugly people left and right showing muh realism.

We had millions of Pokemon fans, from casual, hardcore to mentally ill ones, guess how much bitched about things on the internet. Low effort, low budgets etc. To maintain and grow a legacy you need effort not simply riding on it. Hilarious anecdotes from you who loves this low effort/low budget narrative.

If Nintendo didn't have so many great games and a system that was super appealing to the average gamer, they'd be done!

People need to stop demanding a 4K Switch. It's a stupid idea that will only limit the scope and scale of games in exchange for less jaggies on "muh OLED".

I'm pretty sure the GTA games and RDR sell a lot more than that one year after release.

But it isn't necessarily the best selling Playstation exclusive because Daniel Ahmad has said Spiderman has sold over 20m, and that The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 had sold 20m and 16m respectively as of October 2019.

For the people complaining about ports, I think that it’s awesome for preservation sakes to be able to play old games on modern consoles. My issue is that with Nintendo, you usually have to rebuy the games on the next console. That sort of defeats the purpose of preservation.

The Wii and Wii-U were on another planet when it comes to dry times. Back then, you didn't see one Nintendo game for years, it's a lot better now, and they built up perhaps the greatest Nintendo line-up on any Nintendo consoles since the SNES. The indie games and ports are doing a lot better job of hiding the dry times too.

This is how Nintendo has operated in the last 20 years however, they don't go after the breath and scope of Xbox or Playstation and you will never see the same quality of third-parties. The Switch is a supporting console (for hardcore gamers, for casuals it's not) that offers exclusive games, if you need a large selection of games every month then use Steam or get a Playstation.

At the very least Bravely default 2, Ryza 2 and maybe Shin Megami Tensei 5 could have been late 2020 instead of early 2021. Same for the 3D world port I guess (Feb 2021). Still not at the level of previous years but better.

As for full price remasters, The Last of Us remastered was planned to launch for 60 usd but was reduced to 50 last minute and had no added content whatsoever (just the DLC which was one hour long more or less). So not full but 10 bucks under full price with no content and thirteen months after initial release.

Those games are multiplayer hits and no singleplayer games, so they sell well over a longer period of time. I don't count TLOU, that was over two generations. But i have to admit, i didn't expect Spider-Man to hit 20m. That franchise licence still seems to attract people. Impressive.
