Japan Sales week 50: Cyberpunk launch week and Nintendo Switch total domination

Clearly we see where Sony's focus is from a supply standpoint, wow. Wonder when Japan will be given the surge of inventory since demand will continue to outstrip supply for another 3-6 months globally at a minimum.

I'm really curious how long we will see the Wii like starvation of PS5s not being on the shelf and selling out in a few min of being available.

I guess the PS5 is still supply limited in Japan, but then it means that Sony would rather supply other markets than Japan, which is also a significant change.

Im curious what the strategy is behind it as for some JP devs like Gust or Falcom the local market is key, and I think most of those games will be PS4/Switch for a while.
Its supply limited everywhere. I tried to get it so many times in the states i gave up. Asshole bots/scalpers stealing from my shopping cart. I gave up and built a new pc. Got to play Cyberpunk as intended and got all my cool accessories like mechanical clicky rgb keyboard/mouse and beautiful 144hz display. I'll get a ps5 to play demons souls remake next year. Plus i will be able to play Bethesda/obsidian games on the pc, sony first party and my 300+ ps4 backlog on the ps5, along with my 100+ switch library on the switch.

Certian Japanese titles i think play better on handheld anyway. I just got shiren the wander on switch, I owned it on vita years ago, a game like this just shines on the handheld display. While fighting games like SF, Tekken, Soul Calibur, MK will play way better on a console.

PS5 has 1-3 years for its killer apps. There are also a lot of fans outside Japan supporting Japanese titles. I don’t know how the Japanese gaming market works. I see what sells and when it’s Mario Kart 8. I’m surprised . How many times can that game get sold? Did anyone here import Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban!?

Momoden is on my list to get but not put my order in on amazon j yet, not a import friendly game to say the least but it's a very fun one when you know how to play. This time i stand a chance of getting more than myself playing as it has online hopefully not just against friends as i doubt anyone else on my list will import it lol. Feels weird to finally have another of them released as the last ones were on DS i can't even remember if 3DS got one.

Don't really care about the excuses, epic fail on Sony's part and there is no relief with Monster Hunter, Mario 3D, and then eventually BOTW2 coming. And thats not taking into account if Nintendo has any surprises up its sleeve like a Ring Fit expansion, Splatoon 3 or the MEGA BOMB Kart 9.

If this was the case they should have staggered their launch and just did Japan in April.

The games are widely available for PS5.

Demon's Souls Remake with 20% sold-through number of total shipments.
I'm talking consoles numbers. Not games?

I don't think Sony has a strategy for those JP devs.

Lack of supply, yes, Japan does really like handhelds and mobiles, but the PS5 is still sought after and there aren't enough units, XBOX is the one that sells poorly but i don't think MS is even trying anymore when it comes to Japan.

I'm a Sony guy since the PS1... But each generation that pass, it's becoming harder and harder to have reasons to pick a Playstation. For now, just Gran Turismo and a possibility of Days Gone 2 and Gravity Rush 3...

What happened to Sony?

Dear Sony, if you can read this, where are my japanese games?

I really don't like Nintendo hardware after Super Nintendo (SNES), and i just don't care about Nintendo's games. But right now, Switch looks way more enticing than PS4 and PS5. And to me that's really sad.

It's PC and Nintendo for Japanese games from now on, the westernization is too far gone to reverse.

IDK, I just don't like Nintendos games at all. I play Pokemon Sword because my friends do. I play smash for fun, but that's really it. Mario party was a disappointment.

Ring Fit Adventure sales in Japan by Quarter:
  • 2019 Q4: 495.639(new)
  • 2020 Q1: 249.488(-49.66%)
  • 2020 Q2: 328.387(+31.62%)
  • 2020 Q3: 528.581(+60.49%)
  • 2020 Q4: 367.605 (-47.80%)
Ring Fit Adventure Annual Sales:
  • 2019: 495.639
  • 2020: 1.474.151
Wii Fit Annual Sales:
  • 2007: 818.166
  • 2008: 2.149.131
  • 2009: 588.258
  • 2010: 6.232
Wii Games vs Ring Fit Adventure
  1. Wii Sports - 3.724.565
  2. Wii Fit - 3.561.787
  3. Wii Sports Resort - 3.165.464
  4. Ring Fit Adventure - 1.969.790

Nintendo has sidelined Japan, in terms of Ring Fit supply..
The game has seen a steady rise of sales over the course of the year, but this is the time of year you'd expect Q4 > Q1+Q2+Q3. But it seems Nintendo won't be able to ship such a big amount for the holidays.

So due to World Wide demand and a huge market to service since the September Ring Fit official launch in China, Nintendo has been unable to ship enough copies of Ring Fit this holiday to Japan. Stock issue has not been resolved and the game continues to require lotteries, while on Amazon it has maintained a 35% premium for resellers.
EpdkD8wW8AM2q-X

In South Korea and Taiwan the game has only exited the Top 5 on a few occasions since the Animal Crossing launch, and in the last 10 weeks it was 1st 10 times in one of the two countries.
Overall the huge growth Ring Fit will see this quarter won't be coming from Japan but from Asia.

Still 2021 will be another strong year for Ring Fit Adventure where it will likely outsell Wii Sports, end of the day Wii wasn't all that successful in Japan compared to the Switch, so Ring Fit has the advantage of being on a system which will easily surpass 20 million by Q3 of next year. Its looking like 2021 will be the peak year of the game and I think it will end up with around 2 million sales in it's third year on the market, which as far as I know would be a first for any game in Japan.

Ring Fit slowly becoming a system seller. And its the type of software you can only get on NINTENDO. Sony/MS have nothing last gen or this gen that is similar to it. At least with Wii fit there were other exercise games and Kinect/Eye toy.

I actually remember when it launched it was looked at as a bomba.

Really wonder what Nintendo will pull out next. Labo wasn't the smash hit they were expecting but Ring Fit made up for it.

The expense of HD assets didn't go away, they just shuffled the issue under the rug. Japanese devs cannot afford to move to the PS5 and XsX quite yet. Switch is still on the market and PS4 has a huge installed base. There's very little incentive for them to develop solely for PS5 and I expect a ton of games built for Switch/PS4 with a XsX/PS5 "boosted" version.
Yeah I agree with that completely, since using PS5 as target hardware would make things impossible to downport to Switch.

Where I think it’s important is that half of the reason I bought Sony machines in the past was Japanese games, from Disgaea to Dragon Quest to the Atelier series, Persona etc. Now it seems like most JP games are at least coming to Switch as well and in some cases to PC.

Im not saying Sony is doomed but that’s a big change in my opinion, something that’s been a Sony asset since the PSX.

What's your opinion: what caused that shift in Japanese games to the Switch? I think the portability of the Switch is a huge factor. That's where the market is. Disgaea 6 launching first on Switch is the canary in the coalmine IMO. The small and midsize JRPG devs in particular are gonna go wherever their niche goes. but even so, PS4 has such a huge installed base, I expect we'll get a lot of games released across both. As for the PS5 I don't think it'll have the same JRPG pull.

I honestly don’t know but when I travelled to Japan in January just before COVID I went to the Nintendo store In Tokyo and it was crazy, the queue to enter went all the way down the emergency exit stairs and we waited 45 mins to get in. The hype around Animal Crossing was already insane two months before launch and there was more queue than for the Pokémon store (which is right next to the Nintendo and Capcom ones). So I think it’s more Nintendo doing exceptionally good than Sony doing bad.

I took this picture back then, you had to make a separate queue inside the shop to TRY ring fit (it was out of stock):

Switch has a large and growing userbase with very strong software sales for small/medium titles. The publishers which have put effort into building an audience on Switch are being rewarded for it.

It's a huge system seller for this holiday in Asia where most of the supply is ending up to push Docked Switches:

In China the Ring Fit Bundle has 15,000+ Reviews on Suning which is comparable to the Neon model. Unlike the Neon model Ring Fit Bundle only launched officially in September. Neon has been around for nearly an year longer. There is also a second bundle with 1200+ reviews

The stand alone game with over 5500+ reviews and 99% of them being positive. For comparison on Amazon.co.jp Ring Fit has 5300+ reviews but in Japan the game been out on the market for over an year. Suning has more than 1600 stores covering over 700 cities of China, so it gives us a pretty good idea about what is driving demand in the country, considering the lack of actual official releases in China for the Switch. A pretty substantial amount of software and hardware continues to be sold on the black market, but things are quickly evolving there.

So Asia's overall growth in the next few quarters(or perhaps years), will allow games like Sakuna to end up selling 1 million fairly quickly - as Japanese publishers localize even games like Sakuna for multiple Asian languages, while Tencent has also made a move in terms of both being a strategic partner for Nintendo - while also investing into Platinum and Marvelous and forming partnerships with other companies to help with the marketing, certification and distribution in China. Next year Olive Town and Rune Factory 5 will be major games for Marvelous in the Asia region, while Sakuna can also see substantial growth as the team behind it gets more investments and updates it overtime.

Fitness Boxing 2 just launched and it's a sequel to a game that sold over 1 million world wide, looking at how Ring Fit is doing in Asia - I think we would be looking at another fairly quickly announced 1 million seller for a third party.

Its not the portability.

Its the software plain and simple.

Smash/Splatoon/BOTW/Ring Fit/MK 8/ACH. They have all been selling the system. Just look at the software charts.

Ring Fit has been a huge consistent seller for months, and you can't play it in portable mode.

For whatever reason Nintendo software is really connecting with Japanese players, unlike the Wii U generation.

Sony and most of the Japanese developers have become western focused, losing their home audience. I can't really blame them when outside of Nintendo its impossible for a developer to really survive with just Japan console gamers.

The software focus is definitely a huge part of it. Nintendo is selling like crazy outside of Japan with those same games, too, so maybe Japan is just fed up with whatever the West is offering for sale (and Sony is indeed becoming more westernized).

What's your prediction for this Q3 shipments of Nintendo Switch worldwide.

October 2020 is doing much better than 2019 but November 2020 is slightly down because of Pokemon SwSh released last year.

December should be the final answer whether Nintendo could surpass last year Q3 shipment or not.

I think at least the shipment number for Q3 will be around 12 million units.

Absolute bloodbath. I don't think I've seen a console with this much momentum for such a long period of time, with no signs of stopping.
And without an official price cut too.

People argued that Switch Lite is a price cut for the system and yet Base Switch at $299 is selling much more than Lite version.

  1. Switch – 182,364 (13,834,191)
  2. Switch Lite – 47,334 (2,964,706)
If base Switch is getting a price cut maybe we could potentially see the true selling power of Nintendo Switch.

Don't fret, it'll (possibly) get Sony to take the handheld market seriously again. With the way things are going, they may have to go the hybrid route like Nintendo.
Why would Sony leave their comfortable position as leader of the AAA market to risk competing with Nintendo?

Because Wii and mobile proved that the dotted lines around "the AAA market" are not as solid as people thought. Lemme put it another way: isn't Sony gonna try to compete in the mobile space? I believe they already are in many respects. PSP was/is an exceptional piece of hardware and had a great library. Vita was/is an exceptional piece of hardware and had a Wii U tier library. They could make a gaming handheld that is primarily mobile VR first, gaming handheld second, and TV output third but the point would be to imitate what Nintendo is doing. Nothing wrong with imitation in my opinion. I think it would be a wiser angle from which to push more VR, personally.

IntentionalPun

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Why does anyone want Sony to mimic Nintendo?

Looking at what sells there.. it's all fun stuff, but it's casual stuff.. and Nintendo is great for that.. if you want that, get a Nintendo? (like I did)

I'd much rather Sony keep doing what they are doing.

I disagree, if anything the Wii is proof that market is just as unstable and Nintendo learned that lesson the hard way with Wii U, the hybrid model fits them because they have been making successful low powered handhelds for mant years, Sony only has the PSP and Vita.

Also its not like Sony can just take their PS5 library and port it on an hybrid tablet, it takes alot of commitment and resources they could simply spend on PS5 instead and do what they do best without angering their fanbase.

I don't really view it them as distinct markets with hard lines between them, that's all I'm getting at. Hardcore and casual, handheld and console, PC and console and mobile, physical media versus digital dl/streaming. These are all bleeding together. I don't think it'll be a "one console future", but I also think future "consoles" will need to hit more of these to attract customers. How can you get them off their phones? That's the question everyone is trying to answer.

Nintendo failed to bring the DS audience over to the 3DS. I'm not comfortable narrowing that down to just one or two things. Nintendo went from their best-selling console/handheld to their worst-selling console/handheld, and now (based on Switch sales) they will certainly pass the Wii and may match/exceed the DS. This is pretty wild when I pause to think about it. This doesn't indicate an "unstable market" so much as an incompetent Nintendo. I say that with love, but it seems more likely to me that Nintendo misread the market than a case of the market literally getting up and vanishing / moving away to mobile then showing up again several years later to buy the Switch.

You're right, it takes a lot of commitment and resources. That's why I think Sony should approach their next handheld system from the portable VR angle (which will have a different set of needs and will likely have "downgraded" assets too). It would truly be a differentiator compared to a Nintendo handheld. And maybe it would be an utter failure. 3D lenses in the 3DS didn't help it one bit.

With how much money Sony is making from their console-only strategy, do you really think they will go back to handhelds? No chance.
