More Praise: Next Consoles Are Delivering High FrameRate In Spades

I remember no long ago, people on here were stating console won't get better frame rates........gaf lied to me

the problem im having now is the whole, do u want to play in 60......or do u want Ray Tracing?

Because Spiderman certainly feels better at 60. But it looks like a last gen game. Unless u go with the 30fps mode. Then it looks next gen but feels last gen.

There has never been a standard frame rate across generations.

True; but wasn't really my point. Graphics improve over a generation and it doesn't mean framerate goes down.

I'm aware that 60FPS wasn't unheardof in the past; COD always targeted it.. and always got shit talked because it meant lower fidelity than 30FPS, which was far more normal.

I don't think they do that much, a PSX game early on is not unrecognizable as a late life PSX game, PS2 either (that Metal Gear game was released pretty early and it looked as good as any PS2 game).. same for pretty much any other consoles, Devs get better at moving resources around, so they manage the tradeoffs better, but they still have the same total power. I'd say the PS3 was probably the closest to this, but from the time you had seen Uncharted 2 (2009 on it you had more or less seen the best the machine can do, even MGS IV was a pretty good benchmark)... The 360 was pretty even once Gears of War was out you knew what was the best it could do in 3D at decent frame rates.

On the PS4/one it was even less true, we had Ryze and Killzone:SF DAY 1, they are both visual benchmark for their respective console, in terms of resolution AND frame rate for most AAA games (1080p locked 30 PS4, the locked mode came on a patch, and 900p sub 30 on the one). Even Battlefield IV showed us what 60fps would be like on these machines, in most cases, obviously there are outliers.

There was always a very defined boundary in my case, PC games played at higher framerates on monitors, and Console 30fps played on the Plasma. Unless they weren't consistent in hitting the target or had awful input lag they never bothered me, mostly due to the excellence of that technology in handling motion.

But playing consistently 60fps, amazing looking games on PS5 at higher resolutions has been a disaster. 60hz signals are quite simply orgasmic on the plasma.. even things like 90fps on the LCD monitor look bad in comparison and there's no turning back, i just downloaded the Crash games and i have no desire to play them simply because they're 30fps.

InFamous: Second Son, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, God of War or The Last Guardian supersampled at 60fps are truly something. Even Until Dawn was transformed.

the problem im having now is the whole, do u want to play in 60......or do u want Ray Tracing?

Because Spiderman
Or you simply use the RT 60fps Mode just added to the game?

What's sad is that this kind of support should not be expected from most third party developers.

I'm thinking of getting a ps5 even at scalper price because the price of upgrading my pc will be twice as much

just be patient and get one at a regular price. Don’t use a weird justification to pay more than retail. If you have a great pc you are still in a good spot waiting until it’s on the shelf.

It's early in the generation obviously. If in a couple years the performance is still really good and we haven't reverted back to 30fps as the standard on consoles, I will be impressed.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Imagine being this excited for ten years old pc standards.

At least I'm glad that everyone gets to experience higher framerates, and let's hope the "30 fps is fine crowd" will turn over to the fast side.

Agreed. The question is will it make a noticeable difference in the overall render of the scene. I will say confidently - no.

I think current trends and innovations put consoles in a position where more gains than usual will be made by the end of this gen. There's just a lot more latitude for enhancing performance than at any time in recent history. Will they outperform a top level PC in their day? Of course not, and they shouldn't be expected to, but they will force owners of more modest systems to feel more pressure (to exceed consoles significantly in terms of performance) than they have in the past.

Honestly I think the limit in render quality is going to be found in who best manages the balance of GPU Compute, GPU Rasterization, and CPU & IO usage. I feel like there's a ton of efficiency to be gained though optimal usage in every stage of the pipeline. My worry is that its going to be wasted on chasing super-high resolutions (>4k) because I think the real value lies in the quality and consistency of the image as opposed to clarity and pixel detail.

Won't open my mouth until I see nextgen only AAA games. Crimson Desert, FF16, Callisto Protocol, Mass Effect 5, Spider-Man 2, etc.

If only devs were forward thinking and unlocked framerates for last gen games. Bloodborne 60 fps is only a dream.

Being real though, the reaction by DF and the like for much of this last gen for when games offered an uncapped mode has been "Why would the devs bother? Why would anyone play this?"

Hell, look at their coverage of Nioh 2 which came out just this year. It offered 1080p/60, 4k/30, and 4k unlocked modes on PS4Pro, and as recently as that they were dismissive of the unlocked mode - despite it currently providing by far the best experience right now on PS5.

Same as anything else in computing. When you exhaust options to improve efficiency at the lowest level of operation you transfer your attention to mid and then high-level efficiencies. Because if you can shave down the number of low-level ops needed to achieve the desired end-result you have an effective performance gain
And that basic principle is more attainable with a fixed target . We have a product for those devs, it’s called a fixed spec console guaranteed to not change over a good number of years.
