Art in Gaming you personally dislike?

Pixelshit and cell shaded graphics are the cancer games these days. its like every random indie company shits out one of them each year. And dont even get me started on browser game graphics of games like monster boy etc.

Oh the irony. :p

LOL true enough.

Though to be fair I think the art style in W101 looks a lot nicer than Bravely Default 2.
And the gameplay mostly looks like this:

The fact it's also more self aware of how silly it is (since it's sort of a middle ground between parody and homage to super sentai) also helps.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
But you didn't. You said in a broad stroke you don't understand why people like it. You never emphasize why you disliked it. This is the literal same conversation we've had before. Fucking use your words to explain why you dislike it instead of criticizing others on why they like it.
You are way too fucking sensitive. I think its ugly. Theres nothing eye catching about it, it looks like clay, horrible enemy designs, it all looks low effort, to be honest. Happy?
Maybe if it was made for more powerful hardware, they'd be able to better realize the vision they had for it. But thats not the case.

Im not actually judging people for liking it, I just don't understand how people can think its beautiful. But like what you like.

Not sensitive. I just like a good discussion and I hate lazy discussions.

But thanks for your opinion on it. Carry on.

Destiny 2. Absolutely boring, bland and ugly colors. Horrific alien designs too. Very sad, they could of created a more interesting world because gameplay is pretty good.

Hate anime and furry art, but the art style that stands out to me as my most hated is what my wife calls "Kim Possible style". Don't know how to describe it, but basically the art style for Mark if the Ninja. That game is essentially perfect to me, but fuck do I absolutely hate that art. Everyone's got identical square chins and looks like a Cartoon Network character circa 2003. Fucking despise it.

I also hate the poppy, overly colorful, extremely upbeat, super positive, woke type art that's so prevalent in indie games today. Hard to describe what I mean, but just check out Coffee Talk for a perfect example of what I'm talking about. It's like Western weeb shit. Fucking despise it.

Would you make an exception for something that's so stylized that it no longer appears to be "pixel art", even though it is?

The Last Night, for example:

I'd absolutely make an exception in this case. I would never have guessed that's pixel art. I actually love the look of this.

It's games that are made to look like original NES games I can't stand. This for example is hideous to me:

Yeah I much preferred the more stylized look in DMC 1-4.
Though I also think part of the blame is with the RE engine. It just has this weird uncanny valley look that other realistic looking games (like, say, Uncharted 4, Gears 5, Modern Warfare 2019,etc) don't have.
Pretty much nailed for me as well. Definitely felt off with DMC5. Yup it totally has that uncanny valley effect going on, it has always turned me off of their games. Here's hoping that Capcom doesn't use that engine on their fgs.

That doesn't look like an NES game in the first place though. Even less so when played on a CRT (or with a crt shader).

That's also exactly what I meant in the OP btw. Hideous and false nostalgia.

I also like the cell-shaded look. Valkyria Chronicles is over 10 years old at this point, and still looks great to my eye:

There are 2 sides to the coin. Yes, Valkyria C. looks great with cell/pencil shade looks great but it already would look great without it.

My faves are Killer 7 and Jet Set Radio but these games had fresh and sylish cell shading in their DNA.

But...

Sadly after that "prime" era of cell shaded games, I feel that some devs just clearly tried to cover up their games poor to mediocre graphics with quick and cheap cell shading filter. Still do.
It doesn't look like there went any effort in many of them, so I'm not surprised people are sick after seeing many of such dull examples of the style.

I can't stand most modern 'anime' style art, nor can I stand that lame J-pop/K-pop inspired look where every game has to feature feminine looking prettyboys. Those Atelier series of games and FInal Fantasy 15 are examples of what I'm talking about.

I don't know what happened to Japanese designs. They used to be so much cooler in the 90s, but it looks like all the testosterone has been drained from their art.

The more feminine looking stuff is usually more aesthetically pleasing and probably sales more figurines to both male and females.

Is this the game whose creator was driven to suicide by Quinn and her merry band of virtue signaling tormentors?
No. Different person.
You can read about it here.
When the outrage mob put him in their crosshairs, he did the worst thing possible. He apologized. That kind of behavior just confirms for them that they have an easy target that they can destroy with finality. His publisher didn't protect him after that, either. It's unlikely the game will ever be made.
NEVER apologize.

That pixelshit retro crap is so annoying. I don't mean games that try to look like old Castlevania games, for example, but that certain kind of pixelart that's become popular.

It is also a pet peeve of mine.

I strongly dislike SD characters.

This here however pushed it to a whole other level. I wonder how you can actually imagine such thing to begin with :

I want to run and kick their ugly faces with all my strength. And I would feel that I am actually doing them a favor.

That's exactly the reason that drove me to start this thread

The old pixel-art was made for CRT's. The new one is made for pixel-based displays where every pixel is square and indie-games embraced that ca. 2005+ which lead to this way too blocky, fake look. I personally can't stand it.

This is the ugliest game I've seen. Looks like XBLA title from 2006 when they discovered bloom. Yet it got praised for it's art style. Go figure.

I pretty much hate everything that markets itself as "8-bit" looking
Oh thank you!!!!

This game seemed so interesting but the art entirely turned me off of it. It looks like fucking Minecraft. Shame since I would have probably picked this up if the art direction was better and I liked Bravely Default.

1) lolis and the "generic anime" style.
2) The cheap "plastic toy" look that's hip nowadays. Started with WoW (due to hardware limitations, mostly) and it's fucking everywhere. Recent example: Fenyx Rising.

what kind of stylized art do you like any examples on the serious and the playful side?

Despise photorealistic or hyper-realistic style as there's just no creativity or soul in it. Also, the western-style cartoon look is pretty abhorrent in my eyes.

Hm.

I guess i could say the PS2 and 3 God of War titles. I don't like Kratos' weird.. jawlone and, androgynous model combined with badass look
