PS5 Pro with TWO graphics cards

I vaguely remember something like this out there in the rumormill when gpu driver info, the github data was all we had.

I remember a 2nd PS5 sku was also out there, (wound up being the DE) but it didnt get enough attention so ppl easily dismissed it...

Would rather they just end this gen 4-5 years in than prolong it with a Pro edition.
Consider this, you will be getting the same HW (more or less) either way. The one thing you will lose is maturity of features. Things like the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback seem more of risk to invest in when the time line is unknown or short.

This is the second article I've seen today where the headline boasts about some PS5 feature being the "death blow" for the Series X ("iT jUsT cAn'T cOmPeTe!"). The other one was the supposed haptic feedback being implemented in PSVR2.

Lol, maybe we don't but we didn't need it last gen either and we got it. There will be Pro, it is certain. That is why I haven't bought 5 yet.

They were marketed with 4K TV’s. It was an easy sell and those consoles still didn’t sell that much.

There’s no such incentive this generation.

That's how was PS4 Pro done, if not mistaken, that "butterfly" design.

You can’t be serious. PS4 pro doesn’t have 2 GPU’s. Mark Cerny was speaking metaphorically when talking about GPU design as butterfly as it has mirror like improvements. Double the compute units etc. and also about how backwards compatibility works.

Well I am aware of doubling the GPU CU count, so I thought this news talking about similar thing, however now I see that it suppose to mean 2 GPUs, which with APU design...probably not doable, at least not for cheap.

So our ours (we have 2) and I cant hear anything, only know they are switched on by the white light

Well - If I put my ear next to my PS5 versus my XSX while under load - I can hear a little more noticeable fan noise with the PS5 - but I usually don't sit that close to the consoles.. :p

Great content on that site.

Should we call Phil Spencer and tell him to go ahead and quit?

Nintendo should be worried...Vita does mean life after all.

PC moved away from SLI for a reason. It might actually work better on console with a specified API and layer to handle all the complications, but it's still unquestionably worse for all than having one dedicated GPU.

Whatever this patent is, its not the PS5 Pro.

Multi-GPU setups are complex and unpopular for game developers to program for which is why this type of system on PC's became a tiny niche after the 3DFX years were the tech was still so basic it just worked, but modern GPU's are way too complex for this and Nvidia knows SLI is near its end.

AMD themselves have completely thrown in the towel with Crossfire so if AMD no longer believes in it and they are the hardware supplier to Sony this is not a full blown Playstation system.

The multiple cloud mentions in the patent I think is the true source of this hardware, something in server land for PS Now.

It likely is a PS5 Pro related patent.. why anyone assumes this is right around the corner though is... odd.

As the patent suggests, it's a cheaper way to get more power, not a better way... so this might be a way to get a PS5 Pro out sooner.. or it's just eventually how they'll implement PS5 Pro, in which case.. it's not terribly exciting.

My guess is this is not something right around the corner; they will get PS5 in the cloud soonish.. and then if this is what they choose for PS5 pro, it's a cheaper way to then get that level of power, and not have to fully "upgrade" the cloud.

The AMD infinity Fabric solution - that has won AMD their first US supercomputing government contract using the latest Eypc chips - seems to have cracked the problem.

The input Sony has had on AMD's designs in the last 10years has clearly been massive for AMD. Sony's own multi-chip solution will likely be to stack two APUs interconnecting by some form of Infinity fabric but at very short interconnects.

Console size wise, coming from PS5 monolith, Sony will probably be doing a PS5 slim using a vapour chamber when PS5 sales lower their BOM enough to incorporate one in a £300 console at half the PS5 size, and the PS5 Pro will probably use a lower lithography - if 3nm is ready - to fit a PS4 Pro formfactor.

I never believed that Sony wanted to do a mid-gen refresh with the PS4 Pro, but they knew Xbox was going that way and couldn't risk it being a successful strategy undermining PS4. This info coming to light at this point looks like a pre-emptive warning to Xbox thinking about a XsY model already, that they already have far more in reserve on the hardware side for a 2023 release of a Pro that will maintain the PS5 advantages and do so in a scalable way.

At this point the hardware market for Xbox already looks done IMO. As a stacked APU at the PS5 chip level will be way beyond anything Xbox could even shop for from AMD/nvidia by 2023 even if they were prepared to double Sony's BOM.

Xbox can only really push early for a mid-gen refresh if the performance of the refresh leaves them with a more performant premium console than Sony. But at this stage going early or late won't help if a PS5 Pro will be a stacked APU - as the performance gap of Ps5 over XsX will only widen between PS5 Pro and XsY.

If it takes them over 2 years just to get started on proper next gen games then there wouldn't be any point in replacing them in 4-5 years. I'd rather a longer generation with a much more significant step up for the for the gen after.
