do you ever find yourself playing a video game that you aren't really enjoying and you can't figure out why you're still playing it?

this is kinda happening to me rn with AC: Valhalla.

the game started off decent enough (sorta) but once I got to England shit has quickly begun to go downhill.

I'm about 35 hours in and have been primarily focusing on just doing the main quest line. I'll do whatever sub quests that I happen to stumble on but don't really go out of my way seeking them because they are, for the most part, boring af. last one I did literally involved me carrying a heavy box of apples down a road for 5 minutes. I completed the quest by...placing the box of apples on the floor near some cabin. what the fuck?

I'm in the process of claiming my 4th territory on the alliance map and it feels like I've been doing the same shit for the past 20 hours.

show up to some territory, help them overthrow the king by partaking in large scale battles with my viking bros where the combat is basically indistinguishable each time. the characters are so generic that the plots between each territory are starting to blend together in my head.

upgrading my town has been a chore because all raids feel exactly the same. funny enough, the raids play out exactly the same way as the major battles that take place during the main quest line.

I've also found zero incentive to play this game using any sort of stealth strategy. you can sneak in and get around doing assassinations and finish the quest that way...or you can just run in and kill everything in sight and do the same quest 100 times faster.

there are some positives, I guess. maybe that's what's keeping me going. the world really is beautiful and some of the sites are a joy to explore simply due to how pretty they are. that's pretty much it tho. or maybe I'm just still playing because I paid full price for this game.

I'm hoping once I complete the alliance map and take over all the territories that there will be some major shift in the gameplay and that this will add some much needed variety to the game.

anyways, anyone else ever do this? play a game they aren't necessarily enjoying in hopes that it will get better once you get over some major hurdle in the game? it feels like taking over the alliance map will prob take a total of at least 40 hours (that’s assuming I really try to rush through it). really, really hoping things change for the better once I do.

From my experience, all open-world Ubisoft games are like that.

Great world, great graphics, interesting start, then gameplay is non-stop uncreative repetitive uninspired diarrhea.

It's like they ignore the most important thing in a game: gameplay.

And it's amazing how they manage to do that every single time... I don't understand how people keep buying their shit.

Ok someone answer this for me. I find this part of the game bizarre and weird and it doesn't make sense to me.

Is Petra the hunter in your home place a Native American Woman?

Also when raiding and stuff I constantly hear female voices and why do saxons have female warriors or do they?

Spent 90hrs in it and I skipped a fair bit of side content.
Hated the ending. I have played every single AC game, and like FIFA - I’m slowly starting to want to not play it at all any more.

Stop playing a game you don't enjoy. You give it 35h it's more than enough to judge if it's worth of your time. The game won't change to suddenly become something you like. So yes it's cost fallacy but you're wasting your time it seems. Shove it and move to something you can appreciate...

Thanks for sharing your impressions after 35 hrs. That reinforces the impression I got from Skill Up's review.

Hmm, im up to 60 hours and yeah the whole loop is unlock a region, pledge, form an alliance by placing a submissive on the throne.

If you're forgoing the stealth then yeah jumping in and meleeing everything is going to be very boring. When you advance (30 hours sounds enough), you can pretty much stealth a lot of the game. I try to raid camps for treasures with no kills etc. Are you tracking the order down as well? Thats fun getting a clue then finding the cultist (dont use mark on map)

It's kinda besides the point but I'm happy to get 20 hours of entertainment out of a game nowadays. Most games, I don't have much urge to see the ending and I just hop to next shiny game when I feel it gets old.

Gamepass is feeding on this behavior and I just jump around games. I don't know if it's a good thing or not in the long run. One thing for sure, I'm not the same gamer that I used to be.

I think once they added leveling mechanics into AC is when the series took a real nosedive. It stopped being about assassinating targets and turned into a grindfest. Ubisoft just hid their predatory practices behind rpg mechanics.

I’ve killed order members by chance while doing quests but haven’t sought them out

What rewards do you get for completing them?

I’ve had very little motivation because we’ve gotten very little story in regards to the Assassins. Does completing order kills reveal more information as to what the Assassins have planned/how they fit into the story?

It’s hard for me to play stealth given how quickly I can wipe out camps with dual wield. I feel like stealth will make a game that already feels bloated take even longer to complete

Makes it easier if you are from England.

For example, seeing my hometown like this:

I will admit though its a massive game and could have easily been split into two games. I mean I'm 115 hours in and I'm still no way near the end lol

This could make sense if you think about how the vikings supposedly visited America (Vinland) but knowing Ubisoft its likely political correctness

Yeah, I knew it from the beginning. That's why I take a break after finishing AC Odyssey
I'll wait for another 6-12 months to purchase AC Valhalla

It happened the same thing with me on AC Odyssey: I bought the Gold Edition, played 30 hours, noticed that I hadn't completed not even 20% of the game... Then I reflected that I was not enjoying enough of it to keep playing.

It's just too much of the same thing over and over again, if it was 20 hours or less to finish the main story I would enjoy it a lot.

Is there a way to check what % of the game I have left?

Yes. It’s initially seductive, but ultimately hollow design-by-committee woke bullshit, designed to slowly lure you into microtransactions. This has been Ubisoft’s market strategy for about 5 or 6 years now, possibly longer

You’ve played for 30 hours and only have 4 alliances? ! I get every treasure and do every side quest and I only have two more alliances to go at 20 hours.

Can’t disagree with ya, I kinda like the brain off easy mode killing guys and doing funny little story side missions. Very relaxing to me. Raids haven’t bothered me cause I love just going ham on a bunch of dip shits. They took out enough of the stuff I disliked in the last 2 to keep me playing this one.

I’m also watching Last Kigndom on Netflix and they work together well to keep me jazzed on Vikings :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I don't know, I think you're backwards saying that it started good and then got boring when you got to England. When it opens up and gets out of Norway is when it actually starts getting fun to play.

The side missions are really interesting, very different from the usual formula. You never get any kind of quest markers, go here and do this. It just leaves you to find out what they want, and it's typically some really quick thing that is funny or sometimes sad.

I started out not very interested, but the more I play, the more into it I get.

I’m absolutely loving Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but I did find myself wondering why I was grocery shopping in Ancient Greece at one point, and questioned what I was doing with my life :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Quickly pushed that thought from my mind as my family needed that bread and milk goddamnit...

Ubisoft games are like that, most are similar at its core, upside being them able to release a game rather quickly, their games are god enough for people who enjoyed their formula.
Honestly I wish Bethesda will do that for their open world rpgs again. New release annually for this generation, I just want a open world rpg game that is highly moddable. I just don’t have the patience to wait 3+ years for a new game in the series anymore.

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
I get Assassins Creed Fatigue.

Happens every time. Get to a new area, the fog on the map lifts and there’s all the same question marks and map icons again. I sigh and probably sack it off for a couple of days but then somehow I’ll start again and be like I’ll just head to that question mark over there and slowly but surely uncover more of the map and that’s how it carries on.

I'm with you OP. One of my early New Year's resolutions is to stop playing shitty games.

I stoped playing Valhalla and I'm focusing on immersive sims, classic CRPGs and point and click adventure games.

No point in wasting time.

It's funny how experiences differs from person to person. I'm 50 hours in and loving the game. Several maps and good variety of enemies and skills.., even side-missions are generally well crafted and diverse. The first AC games put me to sleep quickly, but this one I actually like better than Odyssey. Also 60 fps helps..

Edit: Some things aren't that good though; Voice acting is one. The male Eivor sucks, acting itself is fine, but they couldn't have found a much worse tone and accent, also he sounds bored. I also recognize several actors from Odyssey, still trying to fake accents without much success..

@peso

You sum up the exact reasons why I can't play Ubisoft games no more :)

FC, AC, WD ... basically all more of the same.

Ubisoft game is like this , it has been the same thing for as long as I can remember . Paint a fresh coat to a new game which quickly enough to be bloated and repetitive chores .

I like the feeling of discovering stuff by myself in Botw , you see interesting POI from higher up/ far away , mark that shit , run to them . Its 100x time more enjoyable than open the map , mark the closest question marks then run to them ,no sense of discovery at all , feel more like a chore .

No idea why Ubisoft game didnt do that .

The last AC game I enjoyed was ACIII. Starting with Black Flag it began getting progressively worse, especially the underlying story, and each year felt like I'm playing the same game over and over with a different re-skin. I quit around Syndicate. I often think I'll go back to the series, but I like to 100% all the games I play, and the fact that these are so fucking long and repetitive just puts me off.

I felt this way about every AC tbh. Occasionally one is hyped so much for being the new hotness that I fall to the hype and check it out again, but...I never enjoy these games.

oh fuck me for some reason I thought I only had 3 more territories to go when I made this thread.

I didn’t realize that more territories open up once you claim territories

I’m not even close to finishing the alliance map

I’m further than you but it doesn’t change. I’ve stopped doing them but thank god the side quests are 95% localized and some quite funny. My driving force is the secret armors, beasts, some hope of decision madepaying off and the end game stuff. If you continue, mainline the story and find out what interests you at the end. Either way it’s a time sink. Don’t be scared to put it down if your not enjoying it because I’m too deep and it’s becoming a chore now.

I think that's why I tapped out of AC at ACIII.

I think I honestly just hate open world games now.

"Go here, do X, now go here, do Y, now go back to where you did X and do XY, now do X again".

Fucking lame. No narrative at all.
