Retroarch on Series X and S |OT| Too many games

I thought I'd create this thread to discuss emulation on the Series X and S. It's quite a complicated process with lots of settings so a little cooperation and sharing of knowledge will go along way.

Do not discuss where to get ROMs here. The legality of which is very dubious if you don't already own the games your emulating. If only there was a website or search engine you could find about about such things so not to accidentally stumble across it during your daily browse.

How do I emulate on my Xbox series X/S?
Follow this guide; please note you will likely still have to force dev mode by going into system settings and press "LB, RB, LT, RT" in that order and enabling it on the menu that appears (due to the next gen OS update).

Pro tips

+ Once you've downloaded the app update it from within the app, before anything else.
+ You will need to change the key bindings on the controller for increased functionality. Most importantly add in the in game quick menu as it's the only way to increase the games resolution. Also add in the quit retroarch button as it's the only way to apply those changes (as it saves on exit). You'll probably want the FPS toggle added in as well.
+ Gamecube must be ran in DX 11 mode.
+ Retail mode gives a significant performance increase over Dev mode.
+ Some games must be ran internally rather that via USB. Please note in retail mode there is a 16gb folder limit (for now).

So firstly assuming you have the retail version of retroarch (retrospection app) and the FTP app. Open retrospection and go to 'Online Updater'. Once you are there update core info files and update assets, when that's done close the retrospection app.

Now on your pc download you will need to download the PS2 Bios.

You will also need to download whatever roms you want to play (and legally own).

Also you will need a program to unzip the folders, i used 7-Zip.. https://www.7-zip.org/download.html

Ok now last thing to download is FileZilla.. https://filezilla-project.org/

Open 7-zip and find your PS2 Bios you downloaded and right click, click 7-Zip and then 'Extract to' and follow the same step for whatever game you have downloaded. (follow this step any time you download any other system bios or any games)

Once everything is downloaded, open the FTP app on your Xbox. When you open it click 'Set Local Folder' then go down and click start. At the top of FileZilla you will see 'Host:' and you will need to put the IP address of your Xbox that shows on the FTP app. Don't worry about the username or password part leave those blank and then for port enter 21 then click 'QuickConnect'. You should now be connected to your Xbox.

From here on the left of your screen will be local files on your pc and the right will be files on the Xbox. On the right hand side in the top box under 'Remote Site' the second folder should be the one you want as it will say Retrospection. Double click and then go to 'LocalState'. Double click again and look for 'System'. This is where you will want to drag the PS2 Bios you downloaded earlier (find the PS2 Bios folder where ever you saved it using the left box and then drag to right into the system folder) congrats you have done the system bios part.

Now for the steps on where the games go.. On the right hand side again we wanna go Retrospection/LocalState/Downloads and you need to make a folder for your PS2 games, right click on downloads folder and 'Create Directory'. i literally just called it 'PS2 Games' but name it whatever you want. This is where you will need to drag your games to, so Retrospection/LocalState/Downloads/PS2 Games.

After that's all done and make sure everything has finished sending over to the Xbox (you should see a bar at the bottom showing current progress) you can go onto the xbox and click stop on the FTP app and quit the app.

Now open the Retrospection app, go to 'Load Content', 'Downloads', 'PS2 Games' and then click whatever game you want to play and then the top option that says '.bin.' at the end. This will then open up 'Suggested Cores' scroll down until you find 'Sony - PlayStation 2 (PCSX2)' click that and your game should start.

I'll update this post as and when we get more information. Ideally people will explore all their favourite games and report back their settings and performance they are getting (and on which console). To start with I got Mario 64 Native 4k 55-60 FPS on the Series X this evening.

I didn't at first you have to update it within the app and it becomes ALOT more user friendly.
Hmm. I thought I did. I updated the assets and something else. Is there something else I forgot to click on? Under Online Updater right?

This is a cool feature, since I use retroarch on a raspberry pi

So let me get this straight, if u don't register, you'll never be able to do it again?

Edit: above answered me, u can use dev mode forever

Ok so question, when you install retroarch does it have all emulators in it or do you have to add them? I know Saturn is new to it and that but is that fully in there already?

Only one I've been able to use so far is N64. But I'm a real novice at this, so many settings. I'm looking forward to how it all works as much as anyone 😂. I'll keep updating the OP as we discover things though.

I know PS2 emulation is right around the corner on this.

I have it on other devices that is less powerful but have no clue how to use it lol

I have a question. I've tried Mario 64 at 4k and it wouldn't boot. But how can I reduce the resolution if it has to be done in game? 🙈

They must be all in there. When I click on Load Core, I see a ton of them. Just not PCSX2.

The standalone version of PPSSPP is working quite well for me with the exception that the 'B' button is mapped to exit to quick menu during a game. Wasn't doing this on the RetroArch build, but that build won't load most games from USB.

Dead or Alive Xtreme back home on Xbox (Paradise PSP)

Ran perfect at x10 PSP resolution (whatever that means).
Don't really know what I'm doing yet and couldn't figure out how to change resolution in Retroarch for other systems.

How are you booting your PSP isos? From within RetroArch I get the error "Could not read file(during copy read)" when trying to boot from USB thumbdrive. Everything works great from the standalone PPSSPP. I don't get it.

Impressive stuff. Especially so early.

Technically the largest software library for a console, ever.

Just tried that one on PPSSPP. Game moved to internal drive. I did see some people mention that bigger file size games should be put on internal drive and that can make them load.

Can someone test the ps2's Silent Hill shattered memories?

I've had zero luck getting that, or the PSP version running smooth on anything i've ever tried.

I've been able to load Tekken 6 and Capcom Remixed from USB on RetroArch PPSSPP. The rest don't load from USB, and after 4hrs. I'm still yet to find any tutorials on how to remedy any of the issues I'm having:

1. Can't load GameCube or PSP from USB
2. Can't transfer games to internal SSD
3. Can't remap 'B' button from being 'Pause' in standalone PPSSPP

I only download the games that I own... My Sega Saturn and Dreamcast already bite the dust... How does they run on the Series Consoles?

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
My Nvidia Shield tv came out in 2015 and does all of that. So what?

Yeah I just wanted to play the old aliens vs predator game on my xbox so it was an easy win for me. No Dev mode needed. If you get activated before sunday it will work after sunday but they won't be activating anyone else after Sunday .

Read the announcements for more information . I searched for a bit to figure it out and thought I would share.

I think the issue with PPSSPP is the build I have. Even if you clear the 'O' button mapping completely and use a key or different button it won't stop using that like a back button or save state menu hotkey.

As a stupid, but surprisingly effective temp fix you can just remap the 'O' button to the 'Right Trigger' and still pull off combos with relative ease. Just have to move the throttle hotkey to something aside from 'Right Trigger'.

Aside from that, the games are running great on the standalone PPSSPP with the button remap. I was finally able to play FF: Crisis Core(fuck yeah!) at 4x PSP res with x16 AF. Looks great in-game, although the FMV sequences aren't as beautiful as they looked on a real PSP. This way you can just straight load off a USB drive.

Standalone Dev Mode PPSSPP, FF: Crisis Core...

I registered for that Dominator Retail RetroArch build. Hopefully they'll have a fixed version of PPSSPP available, or I need to learn to do it from RetroArch.

So this retail version, is it safe? I won't get banned? I can just play it in standard mode (not dev mode) normally? Then why the hell did I get the Dev version? :|
