No. Flat performances, forgettable, cliche.

I think the game's combat is top tier (which I think is rare in western games) and the open world is absolutely gorgeous, but compared to some other games I thought the side activities could get a little bit too repetitive and the story wasn't anything mind blowing, just good enough to make me want to see the end.

That being said, overall I really enjoyed my time with it, and I'm very excited about what they will do next, since having this sort of recognition probably means they will get to work with a higher budget than before and will probably make them push the envelope on PS5 as well.

Agree with Jimbo. Sucker Punch, just like Guerilla and Insomniac, have elevated themselves to a whole new tier. It's amazing how many Sony studios keep showing this ability to move up through the gears, I guess this is what good management does. I'm hoping that Bend are the next to ascend!
Yeah. They need a breakthrough, which Ghost Of Tsushima clearly was for Sucker Punch, and which Guerilla had with Horizon, and Insomniac had with Spiderman.

Sony is clearly very good at managing and developing their studios, whatever their secret sauce is, it's working.

The one that's had two or more award winning IPs

So, how does Guerilla not be considered a top tier developer?

Because if you're definition is strictly based on awards, then Guerilla and SP have won awards for their own ip's respectively.

To me, SP and Guerilla have elevated themselves to top-tier developers with their recent outings, bringing a new ip with pretty risky concepts to life.

And yeah, I'd say robot dinosaurs set in the future and Japanese samurai ninja game made by Westerners (something AC avoided doing) as "risky concepts," and the fact they did it anyway, and sold well, justifies that conclusion.

I'd argue that devs like Bend studios, Kojima Studios and even Blupoint Studios (if the last two ever became first party) are the ones who haven't broken the mold to elevate themselves higher.

sure, new ips are always risky.. but the game design itself for all 3 of those games wasn't risky at all. Death Stranding, now that's a risky open-world game that won the most awards the year it released. Horizon, Days Gone, Ghost? Generic open world with very little substance to them just run of the mill Ubisoft formula. And it's for those reasons that critically they are B grade at most, with little to no awards being won. Days Gone is almost a C.. Sony needs to get more variety because this marvel type of blockbuster release for these lacking in substance safe open-world games will get fatigued sooner or later.

Sucker Punch games just never land with me. Tsushima is a cut above inFamous but I lost interest after opening up the second area. It's has some nice idea in the dueling and haiku writing but it feels bogged down by too many open world tropes.

Played Sekiro and then this...a bleak comparison. I don’t get the hype personally.

Most western developers can't compete with Japanese developers in terms of combat mechanics.

Insomniac are my favorites. I have to give props to SSM though, God of War was great and I really didn't care for the series up until that point.

The sheer efficiency and volume of output in concert with the quality is just staggering. Unparalleled in fact. No other studio can pump out gems so consistently.

Compared to other games or compared to films/novels?

Compared to other games it's OK at best, compared to films and novels? It's such painfully eye rolling drivel that it's embarrassing to even try and compare it to a movie or a novel, clichés and tropes you can see telegraphed from miles away.

Dislike the wind stuff a little bit, my orientation in open world is kinda bad and sometimes I just want to get from point A to point B just by following a marker.

I really and I mean REALLY dislike the touchpad utilization it's one of athe worst gimmicks around and I've lost count of the times I've accidentally have triggered the touchpad options mid fight resulting in me dying, specially that dumb "pay respects" animation.

Otherwise, this game is easily one of the best titles i've played in the last year, love it.

You are the reason why developers have destroyed what makes open world games special. :p

Still love you though.

I like exploring but sometimes I just want to advance the story ASAP and I've been struggling at times so I have to pause the game to re-orientate. TBH id probably be fine with the wind mechanic if it lasted say 5 seconds longer.

I also prefer walking/riding/moving to my next destination over fast travelling so sometimes I get a little bit overwhelmed by GOT.

I just miss the days of getting lost in open worlds. I don't think we are ever going back to those days.

You know that is true, maybe that's one of the reasons botw is so good. I think right now funnily enough the AC games are the closest there is to that where you can turn off everything and just follow in universe/npc directions.

As I've got older and my game time becomes limited, I find myself wanted more streamlined experiences I guess, instead of getting lost in Morrowind for example.

Planning on picking it up. But only when I get my PS5. I really want to experience this title at 60FPs.
Same. It’s why I’m basically not playing any more PS4 games on PS4 cause I want to experience them at much better resolutions and frame rates.

Last of us2, ghost of Tsushima, kingdom hearts 3, and more. Glad I held off. Now I just a PS5 😪

I can appreciate respecting someone's time but for me, it makes open world's feel largest useless. Funny you mention them but BOTW is my favorite open world since Morrowind.

And speaking of Morrowind, I pine for that experience. Massive, varied world and no map with a fast travel system that made sense (Silt Striders). One of my favorite quests in Morrowind gave you unreliable directions. I'm confident it was an error by the quest writers but it led you down a path you might not have followed otherwise.

One of my favorite side quests in BOTW just gave you directions to a treasure.

Remind me OP - what percentage of your time do you spend trawling the Internet for pro-Sony propaganda? Was it 90% or 95%?

The PS5 BC version is truly amazing.

While we're at it...Jim seriously, bloodborne deserves more love. Patch that shit up and get Japan Studio and Fromsoft to work on a sequel. Sometimes i wonder if they even know how highly praised bloodborne is among the community

I've always thought Sucker Punch as a top tier studio honestly. Even before GoT, I thought the Sly Cooper series and Infamous series were among the best in the Playstation ecosystem.

I'm more surprised that Jim thinks they have finally proved themselves only just recently.

Don't Playstation have an actual PR person to talk publicly? Jim Ryan might be a good CEO (although that is debatable) but he's not a good PR person.

IKR, I've never seen him wear a "hey look I'm a gamer too" t-shirt in public, that would be so much more credible.

yes I'm being sarcastic

SSM > ND > Insomniac > SP > GG

For their top tier studios IMO

I'd put Insomniac on top, simply because they are the only studio that consistently makes games that are actually enjoyable to play, and that's what ultimately matters, it's always easy, fast, responsive, it's simply fun to play their games, as oppose to the rest of the studios, which may be a bit superior when it comes to technical aspects, but the gameplay is so subpar, it's dull, repetitive, boring, you don;t see their games getting as universal praise as Spider-Man, Ratchet, Sunset Overdrive, Resistance etc. They had some titles that flopped in the past sure, but still, the gameplay part was at very least decent in those.

I'm not suggesting that he should do a faux "hey look I'm such gamer, lol" charade but Jim Ryan can't express, even positive things about his own company, in a pleasant way. And also, why didn't he come forward when Ghosts first released? Why is he pushing it now that it has proven to be a strong seller? That alone makes this whole thing seem disingenuous. Dude's presence and anwers and PR statements regarding the PS5 and the launch were and are also fairly chaotic.

Andrew Wilson from EA has the same problem, IMHO. Dude should not be talking to the public either.
