Jim Ryan is highly impressed by the success of Ghost of Tsushima developed by Sucker Punch and has listed them as a top tier studio.

In an interview with GQ, Jim Ryan had nothing but positive words regarding the success of Sucker Punch during the current generation of consoles.

“Lately I find myself really thrilled with the way Ghost Of Tsushima has outperformed everybody’s expectations, ” said Jim. “The team at Sucker Punch did Infamous: Second Son at the start of the generation and then they kind of did a little bit of internal R&D with this concept of a West Coast US studio making a game about medieval Japan.”

“We were a little bit sceptical about it when there were Japanese developers who’ve done that in the past, but they hung on in there and the game has catapulted them into the top tier of our world class studios. As a poster child for the organic growth in our studios over the course of this generation it’s probably the best example we have.”

Ghost of Tsushima was the fastest-selling new IP developed by SIE Worldwide Studios. It has now sold through 5 million copies worldwide and recently received a free DLC update adding multiplayer mode for PS4 and PS5

Loved the game.

Combat is very good, but enemy AI could use some tweaking (fuck those homing spear guys in particular).

I'd also add a bit more variety to missions and more open-world activities. While very thematic, following foxes was my least favorite activity.

Surprisingly, I loved the Kami shrine platforming! A bit more variety and challenge would be good though.

Sucker Punch has consistently put out great games for a long time now. The fact that they are only now getting the attention they deserve is sadder than anything. Sucker Punch and Insomniac have almost always been very consistent, reliable developers for Sony. Hope to see them both continue to receive the accolades. They deserve all their success.

Loved a lot of it but the AI is pretty fucking bad and that camera. If it is not actively a member of the enemies group working in secret...shit than I don't know what it is.
Also is he wording it that way because he was one of the internal peeps who was NOT supportive of them originally? I know there are some pretty...heady rumours of some back and forth concerning the time frame and all that and people in charge.

Said the exact same thing on this forum quite a few times. SP really elevated themselves with this game and broke into top tier territory.

Not only with gamelay, graphics, and art design. They did so with attention to detail regarding tsushima, samurai, and lore.

It was either a Japanese dev or media guy that said SP made the game better than they could have. It got a perfect score with Famitsu.

I bought it a week ago but have to finish days gone, the last guardian and destiny 2/gta v dlc first. But then I'll jump into this hopefully February.

Doing my second playthrough of GoT right now. The criticisms folks are making are correct, but the gameplay fighting is so smooth and sharp and gives you so many options. Thoughtful and gorgeous game. I love just spending time in there. I love roaming the coast and having random skirmishes with mongols. I love being able to throw myself into a fray or pick fools off silently. The last time there was a world I just wanted to marinate myself in was Fallout 3. And then before that, the Batman games. Sometimes the emotional space of a game can be such a joy and comfort. GoT is my game of the year. Maybe Cyberpunk will push it off the peak, but I don't know. Whatever GoT's sequel is, I will buy it day one.

He's right. GoT is a masterpiece and a legit GOTY candidate. I'm playing it on my PS5 at 4K60 and the game is sublime.

It's crazy to see how SP have come. From making Sly Cooper and Infamous to making a masterpiece like GOT.

Thanks Jim, looking forward to the PC port where I can finally not deal with the FOV 50 Sucker Punch seems to love so much. :lollipop_winking:

Agree with Jimbo. Sucker Punch, just like Guerilla and Insomniac, have elevated themselves to a whole new tier. It's amazing how many Sony studios keep showing this ability to move up through the gears, I guess this is what good management does. I'm hoping that Bend are the next to ascend!
Despite all this, Sony needs to broaden their portfolio. Killing Evolution is a colossal misstep. And not locking up Likes of Supermassive, Quantic Dream or Giant Sparrow is another.

Yes those games are not for everybody - but they do add to the robustness and image of brand health.

Ryan is talking about growth and that is correct.

Infamous was decent, but b-tier until SS. Thats when they took off.

they all three make the same exact god damn game my god. i am getting highly afraid that sony are focusing too much on printing money. i don't want them to become like marvel movies just putting out the same formulaic shit. take risks, flip the formula upsidedown etc etc..

I don't know about those studios in particular. But they should lock up some of the others who are already in their orbit like Bluepoint, Housemarque and Kojima. And they should keep growing PixelOpus. There is also that San Diego studio working on the not so secret project.

And I really hope they don't abandon their Japanese side. I want a lot more Japanese influence in their output compared to last gen.

Jim knows what's up! I don't know why people bash him. He's making a great job so far.

GOT is the game to beat this gen. That and God of War. Masterpieces.

Is the story any good?

Yes! Mature and dark but in a good way, not like TLOU2. A revenge story done right, Jin is an absolute badass.
