PS5’s True “Generation-Defining” Games Won’t Come Until 2022 Says Jim Ryan

The PlayStation 5 has officially launched in all regions of the world, but it may be a while before truly transformational next-gen experiences arrive. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan famously stated that the company “believes in generations,” but a number of PS5 blockbusters including Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, and possibly God of War Ragnarok, are crossgen titles, and other Sony execs have hinted PS4 support will continue for at least another three years. Jim Ryan reiterated this idea in a new interview with the Russian News Agency TASS

There are around 114 million PS4s in the world, the number of those who transfer [to PS5 initially], if you keep that in mind, is a small number. But for us, the PS4 community is going to remain incredibly important certainly for 2020, 2021 and 2022. Because in those three years, that will be the larger PlayStation community.
So, if crossgen is going to be a reality of life for some time to come, when are those real next-gen PS5 experiences going to arrive? Stuff that wouldn’t even be imaginable on PS4? According to Ryan, they aren’t coming this year or even next year – 2022 is when the PS5’s power will be truly tapped.

History will tell you that it’s in the second or third year that the developers really hit their stride. Developers typically need a little bit of time to familiarize themselves [with the hardware]. But it’s probably 2022 that you’re going to see some wonderful things in the same way that it was 2015 [or] 2016 for the previous generation. When the generation defining-games started to be published.
Again, this doesn’t mean there won’t be PS5 exclusives before then – we already have two big ones in Demon’s Souls and the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. But it seems the real mind-blowing stuff with the fidelity of that amazing Unreal Engine 5 PS5 demo, is still some ways away.

The PlayStation 5 is available now worldwide. What do you think about Ryan’s comments? Are a couple years too long to wait for those generation-defining games? Or are you cool with this transitional period?

Uh oh.

That's always the case, whether the games are exclusive or cross gen, they are not gonna start feeling truly next-gen until a few years in.

PS4 had exclusives in the first year.

Just like every console before.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add "Someone on NeoGAF will fail to understand the basic meaning of what Jim Ryan said in fairly simple English." 😂

This pretty much confirms Ratchet, Horizon, GoW and GT7 are cross gen games.

Only, it does not.

But I thought it was already decided by Valhalla comparisons?

Good on him for be honest on what everyone should already know.

More like someone in NeoGAF will call you on your bullshit.

I'll explain it in an even simpler way and with very basic words for your benefit.

In no shape or form, Jim Ryan said there won't be PS5 exclusives until 2022. It would also be a pretty silly thing to say since there already are.

Try a little bit harder, please.

Uh oh.

It *was* available, briefly, in very limited quantities. As for a(nother) dearth of marquee titles, what else is new?

Let's speculate what can possibly be out in 2022.

Naughty dog should have a new game by then.
Bend studio's new project is also a possibility.
And maybe something from Japan Studio?

What about the new rumored uncharted he from London studio?

That guy is wishing upon a star.

Those words are so misleading and that's why people expect CGI graphics from nothing but a mid-low end graphics card. It's not in the cards.

All the bandwidth is already taken up in higher pixel count.

You heard it hear first, you will NOT see any kind of features that the PC GPUs struggle with on next-gen consoles. Period. All the 3d features that are already out is all you'll get. I can see an UE5 demo turning into a game but that's not much better than what we see today tbh.

Wait for PS6/PS7 or XSX3. PC is already showing the max visual tech features you can get and the consoles can't run them all.

This is not really surprising at all. Its like this every generation. PS3 wasn't until 2008 till we started seeing very good games like Ratchet/GoW.

Not sure what people expected. Sony and MS are companies and companies main goal is $$$ and they have to be extremely stupid to throw out the massive install base.

Either way 2021 is gonna be stellar year for Sony and much better than 2014 was for PS4. Super excited for Ratchet and Clank, FF16 and GoW. Bring it on baby I am hype for all of gaming.

Not just like Microsoft. They won't be releasing exclusives this year, if ever. It's becoming clear that exclusives just aren't important to Microsoft expanded reach and services are the higher priority.
On which non Microsoft platform can you play any of their Xbox Studio games?(Forza, Fable, Gears, Halo etc), Minecraft excluded as it wasn't built by XGS.

It sucks but it makes sense. Why leave 100 million players behind when MS won't have system sellers till 2022 either. PS5 is winning multi-plat comparisons too, I'm sure that's helping in the decision. Devs are going to take a few years to really unlock what the ps5 can do anyway, let the games be cross gen while they figure it out.

Everwild, Scorn, Forza Motosport, State of Decay 3, Hellblade 2, Avowed, Fable, The Medium are all next gen exclusives, chap.

Games don't need ray tracing to look great. And also, there are some features specific to consoles (sampler feedback streaming, NOT sampler feedback) that are not on PC. Be positive.

Your right, we will so zero improvements in the pipelines. AssCreed is the end all be all.

Improvements never happened any generation, ever. You are peddling shit now.

Not like the language that this guy and you guys speak of. "Generation-defining" ?? Like what? the only thing generation defining is RT and Nanite tech. What else is there expand upon with the LIMITED HARDWARE LIMITS YOU HAVE in these consoles? I've said this over and over again - the CONSOLES DON'T HAVE UNLIMITED POWER.

Gotta laugh at the idiots ITT trying to make it seem like Sony is doing the same thing as MS, Sony debuted their next-gen console with an actual next-gen exclusive title and more next-gen exclusives are coming early next year. With MS it's a steadfast diet of cross-gen games for at least one year, and no first-party exclusives from them in the near future... so NO, not the same thing at all.

You will see GT7, Ratchet, Horizon Forbidden West and God Of War Ragnarok in the cross-gen pipeline.

Naughty Dog will kick off true next gen in 2022. They will have been busy since Uncharted 4 shipped.
