Do you see Sony launching a XSS competitor?

What the title says.. But first consider this:

1. XSS ends up being an actual 1440p / 1080p of actual next-gen games and not a "last-gen underpowered machine" as some state

2. It sells much more than its bigger brother and PS5 DE

Remember that TV adoption is very slow, even TV content producers have a lot of their content still at 480p and even most of them do in Latinamerica, so 4K is probably not a priority for most people anyway.

I think there's a possibility but not sure, what do you think?

Edit: To be more clear about "XSS competitor", I meant a $299 or $249 machine that can play same games but at lower resolution

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
No doubt SONY is considering it that's just how tech works today (iphone 12, 12 pro max, xss, xsx etc.) have a lower powered version

Ask me about my Stream Deck
Didn't they do that already back in 2016?

No need. They got the disc and DE at good price points. The jury is still out if the Series S will have any impact at all. Sony is still coasting on the PS4 success and it looks it's going to continue with the PS5.

We're already starting sto see gimped games on the XSS (AC Valhalla at 30fps instead of 60), and a clear preference amongst early adopters for the XSX, that is unlikely to cause Developers to feel a need to put extra effort in, to make the games run at their best on such handicapped hardware.

Meanwhile, the PS5 DE is only a hundred bucks more, and offering a full fat next gen experience.

The XSS is another classic Microsoft answer to a question no one but shareholders were asking.

The audience for such a cheap and nasty budget device only care about COD and Fifa (and Madden if in the US). They won't care about gamepass because they don't play other games.

As such, not having a disc drive will hamper sales, since this is the casual market that tend to be happy buying second hand, or trading their previous year's game in, to offset rhe cost of of each new, yearly installment.

What's more, none of us as enthusiasts should want this thing to succeed. It's success would only hold XSX and PS5 titles back. It was a dumb experiment that put greed above games, and will hopefully be an irrelevant, disappointing footnote in the history of 9th gen.

I know a few people who picked up the S and they are returning it ASAP lol. things may get better for it but the resolution downgrade from the one X is noticeable for them. I told them to get the SX from the beginning but they wanted a cheaper option to go with the PS5.

R&D and setting up/retooling manufacturing lines for it would be costly. Bit of a gamble whether the fiscal and opportunity costs would be worth it. Since the PS5 DE is an objectively and significantly superior product, it's to their competitive advantage to position it within the same ballpark as the S price wise and eat the loss.

Sony doesnt need to.

And how does it sell more than xsex when it is still available in many countries? Here in thousands of units.

Shouldnt it sell out too, like xsex, if it is the big hit?

PS5de is almost the same price but much better as xses, so it would be stupid to make "cheaper ps5"

And they can always sell ps4 as entry system for cheap

They might ramp up PS5 DE production if they need to but no way they release a lower spec system. It makes no sense with only a $100 price difference to the current less expensive model they already have on the market.

In your hypothetical scenario where games are only sacrificing resolution and it ends up selling better than the Ps5 and Series X....maybe.

But, while I see the appeal it has to some, I still have my doubts about the Series S. Specially regarding how well it will sell and how it will perform once we move past cross gen and most Devs start making next gen only titles.

UK Retailers say that there are more batches of PS4's coming next month. They will probably keep selling these as the cheaper alternative (They still sell well).

Nah, let it all be as is to move forward. Another Sony SKU means keepings thing back from next gen at THIS point, not a stepping stone moving forward.

Nah. They have the cheaper digital Sku, doubt they’ll want a third one. Especially if there are plans for a PS5 Pro in 3-4 years. The current models will be the cheap option then, maybe with a slim redesign etc.

They have released a competitor.

It's called the PS5 digital.

No one in their right mind would pick the XSS over the PS5 digital.

For 100 dollars more you are getting the same power as the physical PS5 which is 2.5 that of XSS.

Not to forget a bigger/faster SSD.

The XSS is DOA. Get the XSX if you prefer Microsoft.
